We used to shoot here all the time when my parents first moved there about 30 years ago. 33.680553, -117.202377

people do shoot in that area. at the base of double butte east of heritage lake. from what i can gather its not blm. it might be private land. people have reported being checked by law enforcement and then just told to be careful. i have also had other tell me that LEO have told them to leave. so i guess it depends on who you get.

This is on the corner right? where all the concrete pads are? I saw 3 trucks there today, I drove back there a week or two ago and there are shell casings and shooting trash all over.

Had no idea there were so many Calgunners in my neck of the woods. We need to have a meetup for locals!

I just drove through that entire area and I HIGHLY doubt it is legal to shoot there. The area was heavily trafficked by commuters and there was track housing and obvious private property in close proximity. Those who have previously used the area for target shooting have done so at their own risk, and previous encounters with RSO were lucky to get a deputy who simply told them to leave or be careful.

By the way, this area was even less remote (more developed) than the area off of Nichols and I-15 in Lake Elsinore where people were being told to leave by deputies. You're best bet to be legal in this area is to go to Steele Peak (BLM) when it isn't closed for "fire danger" (BLM excuse), or the Forest Service land on Highway 74 (Florida Ave.) east of Hemet before you go up the mountain.

I live pretty close to Sun City/Perris/Quail Valley. Lots of housing around here and more going up every few months. I hike in the hills east of Menifee pretty regularly and I see brass and fired shotgun shells all over.

Default shooting menifee /suncity area???

The area is definitely illegal to shoot. Lookup the Riverside county shooting ordinance, it details where you can and can't target shoot in Riverside county.

The basics are no shooting within 1 mile of incorporated cities, homes, 500 yards from roads I think, things like that.

Also, that area is all private property. The area that is county land is Double Butte park and is a no shooting area.

I'd like to go check out some local land as well. I don't trust the typical ranges so I'd prefer the open land to shoot and set up my own course of fire.

So it sounds like Steele Peak and the area east of Hemet are the only two free areas to shoot at around here. Can you guys provide any suggestions or insight for shooting at either location?

Wait until they're reopened after fire season, and bring lots of trash bags.

Just an FYI,
The other day RCSO responded to the new housing development off the 74 behind Heritage High School because someone shooting in the hills off to the East decided to let a round fly into the housing development and went into someones living room. The bullet was recovered and while identifying the shooter is remote, it does not bode well for shooting out there on the East side of the hills. While there are still people shooting out there today, I would expect that it won't last much longer.

Something like this was only bound to happen there. I drove by this location the other day and the area around the concrete pads is littered with trash as well. In addition to shooting, people have been using that area as their personal landfill. I wouldn't be surprised to see signs posted around that location soon and more frequent patrols by Riverside Sheriff's deputies.

THE ONLY LEGAL PUBLIC SHOOTING AREAS IN THE WESTERN HALF OF THE COUNTY ARE STEELE PEAK AND BEE CANYON WHEN THEY AREN'T CLOSED FOR FIRE SEASON.

The area off Nichols Rd. and I-15 in Lake Elsinore is also not a legal shooting area. My friend was there a couple of weeks ago and was visited by deputies who told him to leave the area.

On Saturday my cousin saw 4-5 police cars over there and a bunch of people were shooting. He was just driving by so he didn't see if anyone got tickets or arrested.

Apparently a stray bullet hit a horse on the other side of the hill from the Nichols area, I was told so expect higher police activity there. A few stray bullets and residents over the hill get all upset, if they don't like it they should move, I will continue to shoot there, police only give warnings so I will keep going there.

Yes a horse got hit, an RV, several windows, several homes, no people yet (that I know of). Yes expect higher police activity. Yes police only give warnings most the time. Joking about residents moving, and me still shooting there. I know this because I live on the other side of the hill !

Unhappy Heritage Lakes

I live in Heritage Lakes very close to McCall and Briggs.
I frequently shoot at the "concrete pads" and have been for several years.
I have had SO stop by and talk but never more than that.
I always clean up my mess, and conduct myself well.
I have never had a problem with other shooters or LEO
I have even been told by LEO that it was ok to shoot there, I now
know that it is not ok and I have been shooting in an illegal area.

we have a Heritage Group FaceBook page. and one of our newest residents has taken upon herself to "shut down the illegal shooting"
Now mind you she is correct and well within her rights to do so.
It is just a shame that a little slice of life that for so many years has not been a problem is now the target, due to misuse and abuse.
i will miss the 2min. drive it took to get there and set up.

Re both areas, please refer to the threads in the CGSSA Official Clean up forum and the Meets, Ranges and Shoots forum for Calguns Official Clean ups/Shoots. Eat Dirt is the organizer for the scheduled clean ups at both areas, tho of course anyone can go up and clean the areas by themselves or with others.

There is an official Calguns clean up at Bee Cyn. on Jan. 7, at 8am. After we clean up at both areas we shoot in the canyons we clean (Bee Cyn.) and at Steele Peak (remember, it is illegal to shoot in the flat area at the bottom of the hill since it's too close to the road. The BLM rangers will cite).

We often also have food and drinks brought up by Eat Dirt's wife at the Bee Cyn clean up/shoot. The Steele Peak one frequently has a planned pot luck.

Drove by the pads yesterday. Saw a couple people out there shooting. Less than 2 minutes down the road there was an unmarked cop heading that way pretty quickly. Jut curious if anyone has had any issues shooting there lately?

I was ticketed there on presidents weekend 2017 for illegal shooting. I was there with my twin 11 year old girls. I was also sited for having 2 15 round mags in my range bag from my grandfathers old pistol.

What were you sited for? Those magazines aren't illegal yet. Are you young? Did you incriminate yourself?

Be polite, but know your rights. "The Man" isn't there to be your friend, he is there to do his job and lawfully enforce local ordinances.

This area is shut down. The police claim that local residents complained, but really it looks like it was taken over by dirt bike riders. Every time the motocross guys are out there, the police are called and cite everyone. Save yourself the $100 ticket. It's done. It's a shame, too. I liked shooting 5 minutes from home.

It sucks but spending the money on gas and driving an hour and a half is better than paying a fine.

Just an update on this location for anyone that was still unsure about shooting here. No trespass signs have been placed around the perimeter. Also, a gate with no trespass signs affixed to it has been installed blocking the dirt path leading to the concrete pads where people had been target shooting at previously. This has all been done in the last month.

The concrete pads used to be a huge poultry ranch way back in the day... used to live on the other side of that hill in early '80's
