Default Ludicrious Calls Responded To

Curious what are the most crazy / waste of time calls you've ever responded to. I listen to the local Fremont police scanner before I fall asleep and a few months ago I remember hearing a call where the part of the dispatch I heard was something like:
--
RP says their room mate is eating their food from the fridge
Cannot confront room mate because they are scared they will get beat up
Needs a response because their food was stolen
--

I couldn't believe someone called the police for that and they actually got dispatched.

Are there any ridiculous calls you've ever responded to?

You actually had to respond to it? Can you deny calls like that?

Suspicious package on a bus. It was a empty transparent pink bag, the type the newspaper delivery people put your paper in when it is raining.

Snake in the parking lot.

Tortoise in a parking lot.

Coyote in a field.

I'm guessing you only have to show up if it's a "slow" day? I've listened to Oakland scanner and sometimes I hear the dispatch saying something like:

"RP reported XYZ issue at 17:00" and it's 23:50 when it's being called out..

1990 Thanksgiving day, day shift 0600-1400

Got a call at 0800 415/BG

Responded to the location, saw what happened, ended up going out of area and arrested the boyfriend for 5 felony counts: Attempted 187. felony vandalism.. and so on. I finished the report before I go home, because of the long weekend.

I missed my Thanksgiving dinner with friends and family because I did not go home until 2000.

Following Monday, the handling detective told me the DA did not file the case, because the girlfriend refused to testify because she still loves him.

Oh, well. such is life.

Old man called about a fire hazard.

He said the mirror on his neighbors RV was reflecting the morning sun onto his kitchen window thus the possibility of setting his curtains on fire. I went to the neighbor and asked if I could change the angle on the mirror and he said no problem.

Where to begin...

At least a handful of times, someone called in to complain on elementary/middle school aged kids playing basketball on a residential street and/or cul de sac due to either "traffic hazard" or "noise complaint" during the day.

Two black people walking through a "Mexican neighborhood" during the day (and nothing else noted).

"Rattlesnake" on a residential street (gopher snake).

Illegal taco truck vendors

Deer in the roadway (not dead, just that it was walking across at one point).

Out of control four, five, six, seven, or eight year olds.

Neighbor dispute over a wrapper from a trash can being blown into another's yard (first time complaint; not an ongoing issue).

Someone paid $100 for a brand new $700 computer that "fell off the back of a UPS truck" but turned out to be bricks in a computer box.

I'm sure I have forgotten a few other winners as well.

Bear seen crossing Highway 39 between the West Fork Bridge and Crystal Lake Road (a 20+ mile stretch of mountain road) in San Gabriel Canyon, Angeles National Forest.

The list is endless after 32+ years.

Had these too.

Yeah, same as above. Similar calls all wrapped into one nice, gift basket. Usually get these calls in apartment complexes.

Had some similar. Someone sold something on craigslist, then realized when they got home that the money was fake.

Saw a call earlier today where renters paid their landlord in cash. Landlord called and said x amount of dollars was fake/counterfeit. Landlord gives money back to renters and renters hands over a money order. Renters realize the money they got back was fake. Basically a what came first, chicken or the egg?

I'm not sure which was more pathetic, the call about trash can's at the curb for more than 12 hours, or the fact the city actually had an ordinance about trash cans at the curb for more than 12 hours.

Although I think the worst one was when a guy called 911, because I was on his porch wanting to talk to him. Because his neighbor called when he tore down the fence between the yards. God I hated day shift.

We had one like that:

Lady calls about prowler, deputy gets sent out.
Lady calls back, the prowler is at my front door! Dispatch says hold on.
Dispatch calls dep "are you at the front door?"
Dep: "yes"
Dispatch then asks lady: "Do you have a peephole?"
"Yes"
"Look through the peephole and tell me if the prowler has a tan shirt with a silver star and green pants"
"Yes, he does but how do I know it's really a deputy?"
"Lady, just open the damn door!"

Barking dog.
Home owner gone.
Advised the dog to knock it off.
No more calls that night!

I had a customer call 911 because I refused to refund him for some brake pads that he wanted to return. The LEO came and asked me to refund the customer , and I told the officer the same thing I told the customer, “I’m more than willing to refund his purchase, just as soon as the proper product is placed back in the box.” The customer had put someone else’s brake pad product in the box.

After working Lynwood (LASD) Station for five years I transferred to San Dimas station. One of the first calls was "Bird in the tree making noise". I couldn't believe I was sent to something like this. I got to the address given and sure enough there was a bird cheeping. I changed out a bird shot round and took care of the problem. For some reason the resident wouldn't answer the door when I banged on it.

Older lady kept calling 911 about someone trying to break into her home. After the third time responding, she admitted she just wanted someone to talk to.

My neighbors air conditioner is to loud.
My neighbors security lights are shining on my property.
My neighbors are parking on the street in front of my house.
My neighbors security cameras are pointing at my house.
My neighbors are having loud sex.
My neighbors are washing their car, and the water is coming onto my driveway.
The leaves from my neighbors trees are blowing onto my property.
My neighbors cut down their tree, and now we don't have a shady spot to park our car.
My children won't go to school.
There are monkeys in the trees outside my house.
two neighbor ladies spraying each other with hoses. (They were ugly.)
I want a refund from a restaurant because the food was bad. (entire plate of food consumed.)
Kids are playing in the street.
There is a raccoon on my roof. (She wanted me to shoot it.)
The roofers spray painted (this lady is a B...H) on the roofing paper of my new house, and then put the tile on top of it. (She was a B...H)
There is a ghost in my Nativity scene. (It was July.)

A lonely horny woman (Pig Pimpin style) who would call about hearing noises outside her house, and also ask for an interior check. I was a rookie, and my partner knew her well When we arrived at her house she had her stereo on blast playing "Spill the Wine" by War. She was dressed in a very short nightgown with nothing on underneath it.

We walked through her house, and she insisted we check her bedroom. So I, as the rookie got that task. She quickly sat on the bed, as I was looking under it she spread her legs so I got a full and clear look at her neither regions....

As we were leaving she asked if either one of use were doing anything after our shift. (she knew we were off duty in less than 30 minutes). Gotta love the 70's.

OJT.... nothing like it.

Ok, I’ll play. Everyone has plenty of shootings/stabbings/murders/decapitations/evicerations etc. boring stuff, but I kept a notebook of the weird ones, so these are some quotes from how calls were dispatched to me.

“Now...shut in a bedroom...uninvited raccoon...unknown how it got in. RP has children... thought it was a cat... when he went to pick it up it wasn’t too happy”

“5 ago...RP found uncle in the backyard having sex with his dog...uncle went back in the house...RP says he’s caught his uncle before”

“Female rambling about her cross dressing husband, says the sex toys he uses are scaring her...she is in fear for her life...no specific threats made”

“ **spanish speaking RP** since sept 21 and chronic...RP being harassed by a company wanting RP to purchase an English speaking course...wants RP to send a mo yea order...RP not sure how to respond”

“FD 10-4...at firehouse...need assist getting handcuffs off...states they bought them at love boutique across the street and the keys don’t work...is on his girlfriends hand...FD requests we assist”

“LOC is a sober living facility...female yelling about random things...none of what she’s saying is making sense...something about machines, shrimp, and something crawling out of her spine...NFD”

“RP says his VEH is not stolen...he reported it stolen ...says he was drunk and forgot...needs taken out of the system...NFD”

“now in the lobby...male came in and urinated on himself and is drooling...NFD”

I was working the desk on day at Walnut Station. Woman calls the station to report that her daughter's ex-boyfriend was attempting to break into the daughter's home. I asked her the address of her daughter and entered it into my computer. I asked the lady where she was calling from. She replied Michigan. I asked her why her daughter hadn't called 911. The mother said she asked her daughter the same question but her daughter was crying and yelling that the boyfriend was trying to force the front door open.

I told the mother I'd send deputies to her daughter and then call her daughter. I told her I would stay on the phone until the deputies arrived and have her daughter call her when it was over. The deputies arrived, the suspect went to jail before breaking in and daughter called mom. Daughter was advised to call 911 first and mom when it was over next time.

Oh ours seem to still make half of “those” calls anyway.. but the other half are often amazing. They are things like: sqiurrrl in tree, internal temperature to bring meat up to, why is the fire alarm chirping, it’s raining outside....

I've hung out with our call takers, dispatchers, and records for a day. There are significantly worse calls than the ridiculous ones that we do get.

I think the dispatchers save those for fire/EMS. We had a frequent flier that couldn't sleep. At 0330 - 0400. We finally got coppers to go kick her adult son out of bed and take her wherever she wanted to go. It finally stopped after that.

Mostly repeats of what has been said. Seems people suffer from the same stupid everywhere. We are definitely a "No call too small" agency. When i was brand new i was found the humor in telling people how to parent their children as a mid 20's guy with no wife and no children.

"My kid won't go to school" calls always annoyed me quite a bit. They often just want us to come and scare their children into going to school. I always found it prudent to remind the parents my job is not to go around scaring small children.

And five years later when little Thomas fails to yield duringbg a traffic stop and crashes simply because he was unlicensed the parents will complain that ever since Thomas was a little schoolboy he was scared of the police....

Had one the other day where RP wanted us to check on her uncle. Uncle was homeless, bad leg, on crutches, and worried that her uncle may fall or trip into traffic and get hurt.

Found uncle in the system prior to arriving and he had a felony $300k warrant for failing to register. That was a shift killer.

Funny thing is I had seen uncle all day, even before BOW, because I was in the area. He was doing just fine, dancing around on the street corner, minding his own business. Would’ve never known he had a $300k warrant unless his “caring” niece didn’t call us about him.

First thing that comes to mind, but I’m sure there are more.

Noise disturbance of juveniles yelling and screaming st the intersection of walk and don’t walk. At that same intersection is a park, it was about 1pm on a weekend...

At the same park last summer right after the BBQ Becky scandal, someone who lived near the same park at the intersection of walk and don’t walk called to report someone with a grille cooking outside of the designated BBQ area.

Officer Time helped resolve that one. My partner and I located a catering company (taco man) packing their equipment away after a birthday party had started to wind down.

I listen to a police scanner all day while working and it amazes me that calls even go out for stuff like: "my kid won't go to/back to school".
