Default Lets get active!!

I would like to get some volunteers together to make a pro active chapter up here in Lake County.

I know that some of you folks in Mendocino, Sonoma and Napa may also want to get involved since many of you probably come to Lake County to shoot, hunt, camp and have fun up here.

Lets see if we can get something started

Let me know what kind of ideas you have and what we can do to make this a fun thing for everyone!!

Well done, Taper! I'm glad to see this forum is up, I know people have wanted it. If you want to meet for dinner sometime in April, to talk over this C3 thing I'd love to. Maybe get the new Bay Area C3's to join us?

Congrats, and let me know how we in Sac can help you.

There ARE other people in Lake county, amazing! hehe

Seems every time I hit up a range on the weekend I never see another living soul.

Where do my fellow lake county shooters go to shoot? The only place I know of is up past high valley ranch in the mendo national forest.

First Choice: Rod & Gun Club range off highland springs road. $50 annual membership (+NRA member requirement), also used by all the LEOs. Easy to get to in anything from a sedan to a school bus.

Backup: Cow Mountain South for ~100m shooting. Requires a vehicle capable of mild offroad driving. Might get away with a good FWD with decent clearance. Usual evil slippery clay/dirt earth, so be wary after a rain.

Other Backup: Cow Mountain North. Has a 1000m rifle range, but requires a solid SUV/Truck to safely get in and out. Don't need a rock crawler, but I recommend at least 30° approach and departure and 21° breakover. If it's rained recently mud/snow tires would be a bonus, that damn clay out there can get really slippery.

Thanks cr1ms0njyhad for the response. I've been meaning to check out the rod and gun club. I have the NRA membership so perhaps ill go there this weekend. Do I have to sign up somewhere else first or can I sign up on site when I get there? Any info is appreciated.

Lakeshore Sports in clearlake (lakeshore drive off 53, they're in the little strip mall on the left just down the hill) has the paperwork for rod & gun club memberships. (Other places may too, but that's the only one I know of)

Cow Mountain is BLM land. The mountains between lakeport and ukiah, see the BLM website for directions on how to get there from either side.

And just because I'm a nice guy, I'll save you the google search since I keep it bookmarked:

Don't know of any specific hours off the top of my head. The gate is locked 24/7, and members are given the combination to the lock. If you weren't given the combo or a key, it'll make it hard to get in

Excellent, you should be good to go then. Standard outdoor range rules apply: bring your own targets and clean up your brass. Time-wise I've gone over after work on weekdays a few times to get some dusk shooting in, so I don't think there are "office hours." If you plan on pistol shooting at the pistol range you might want to bring your own target stands or a cable. I've found that sometimes the cable strung between the poles have been taken down (reason unknown). The rifle side (200y max, pistols allowed on that side too as long as you hit the berm) has target stands so you just need paper and tacks/staple gun/tape/etc.

So I got to go this weekend and had a good time. Unfortunately did not get to use the rifle range cause it was closed down an in use for some sort of class. That was a pretty big let down but I def got to use the pistol range.

Sounds like it's just as well I didn't go then. I picked up 5 cases of clays from walmart and a new thrower. Unfortunately the winchester thrower is a POS, going to return it monday, and as a result I cancelled my weekend shoot

Saw that. Never had any bad interactions personally, though I don't own many true high standard capacity magazines other than four with my original service sidearm (Beretta M9). My .45 uses 10rd mags and my ARs use 10/30 mags. Never even been hassled about the EBR other than a few sheriffs drooling over it.

Small correction, a little over 2 years ago some 5'8"-ish short blonde haired male forest service ranger tried to hassle me about shooting in mendo forest and tried to threaten me with arrest and confiscation (only doing pistol shooting drills that day, no EBRs. Being the CYA-minded shooter than I am, I always keep relevant paperwork about the area I'm shooting in that day as well as a Kodak waterproof digital camera that fits in my shirt pocket.

Now, as a general rule, I treat every person I meet with respect regardless of their attire and accoutrements (IE badge). This particular individual responded to my polite greeting with a, shall we say, less than polite or professional attitude. At that point I politely informed the officer he was being recorded, stated that his assertion as to the legality of firearm discharges at that location were incorrect and I have paperwork proving it, stated that no search will be consented to, and finished off with a polite reminder that any attempt at searching my person or property without a warrant or taking any property would be a violation of his official department policy as well as my rights and will result in a 42 USC 1983 civil suit he will be personally liable for.

He left in a huff, never seen that person again. Not sure if it's the same officer that the other gentleman had the misfortune to encounter. Moral of my story and his, though, is that any time you are doing any public shooting (IE BLM land) know your area and always have at least a recording device and preferably a like-minded shooting partner. Two witnesses are better than one, especially if both have their own recording devices

Welcome Polo!

CGSSA is a 501 C4 org that is trying to get active members from Lake, Mendo, Sonoma and Napa counties to pull together to promote our 2A rights, both politically and socially with meetings to keep people up to date, political fire missions and just plain ole plinking.

Hey Guys,

I've had a place in Lake County off and on since I was born. I got my CCW here in 2004 but moved to Texas in 2008. Well, for reasons that aren't important, I'm back in Lake County once again. California is quite an event after living under Lonestar freedom for 5 years. I'm determined to bring a little bit of Texas sanity and freedom back to my home community as an enlightened repatriate. I think a Lake County Chapter is a great place to start. Count me in.
