Default Rainbow Sig, Rainbow Leek

Several of us were kicking around women's CCW handgun choices a while back in the Women's Forum. Everyone was in love with the Rainbow Sig, even me.

The OP got her hands on a Rainbow Leek pocket knife, and wowee!

For those of you who missed out last time, The Kershaw Guy has Rainbow Leek "blems" for sale again. He only has them once in a while. I bought one from him and love it. The "blem" part is Kershaw's way of saying that the finish isn't totally perfect, sold at a discount and you can't send them back to Kershaw to be sharpened. I have yet to find the flaw in mine and jeez!! it's sharp. And almost $100 below retail.

Anyway, here's a link. There are lots of other choices too. And Rainbows in other shapes. http://kershawguy.com/products-page/...-1660vib-blem/

The rainbow finish is considerably better quality than the standard leek, IMO. I've compared them and it just feels oh so much better in my hands. Plus it appears less "threatening" to people when I use it for EDC activities/functions.

Glad you're still spreading the word, Bon Bon.

This guy has the blems for $39.99, they have been going for $49, on eBay. Not sure how significant the blems are.

That's a great price. My stepson bought a rainbow Chive years ago at a gunshow for $35 and I thought he stole it. If he hadn't bought it, I would have.

FYI, about Kershaw "blems", per The Kershaw Guy:

"Kershaw blems are offered at a very large discount and have no factory warranty. They are marked with four small x's on blade to designate them as blems. Blems can be many things including but not limited to, scratches, spots on blade coatings, discoloration, Etc. These are sold without boxes and are a great value as users, if you are a collector, I suggest you browse the new items section. I offer 100% satisfaction on your purchases."

If mine has a flaw in it, I can't find it. And these knives, are NEW, not used. I wouldn't buy one used, who knows what it might have been used for?

Lotsa other colors and shapes in the "blems" area. Even Damascus steel.

Congrats, MZ, you did the right thing.

Alright then. I seem to get the notion that knives (especially this Kershaw Rainbow Leek) is a good thing. Apart from being a bright, shiny object (to which this woman is attracted), someone enlighten me about the why to carrying a knife. I've never even considered it!

A knife is a useful tool for so many reasons. It makes eating a stick of dry Italian sausage much easier, it can open a box or letter. It can gun a loose thread, or pry open an object. It can cut fishing line off of a pelican, it can be used to remove a splinter or to split a t-shirt to make a bandage.

It can also be used to ward off an attacker when there is no other option available, but it can also be used against you. Better to have one than not.

I keep a knife in my car, and kept one on my boat, but I don't carry one on my person very often, since I began carrying a gun. Occasionally a small folding knife for cutting boxes. In training knife was never my strong suite, and in real life I have had one knife encounter, and got cut pretty bad. (Rule, if grabbing wrist, don't miss and get fingers cut).

Probably more than any of the tools we talk about on this forum, a knife for self defense requires real training, intense training, real world training. Just my opinion.

For me, carrying a knife is partly useful tool, partly fashion item (blush). As for the tool, well, lots of things. I've carried a Swiss Army knife in my car for years. You never know when you might need to slice an apple, strip a wire, drive a screw or open a wine bottle.

As for fashion accessories, my 1911 has teal grips, so I have a teal Kershaw leek. I carry it at the range, good for opening ammo boxes. Pure show off. I carry the Rainbow Leek just for show, like jewelry.

I've never carried pocket knives in my actual pocket before, but the more I do, the more I like it. But understand, I wouldn't ever try to use it defensively. I can't go hand to hand with anyone and win. I wouldn't even try.

But I might learn. The Sacramento Gun Club has a trained defensive-knife instructor, and they're talking about doing classes. If so, I'll be there, just to learn something new. It couldn't hurt...

I've kept a Swiss Army knife in the car because as noted above one never knows when one's path will cross a bottle of wine, hunk of cheese and some salami.....as well as all the other useful things one can do with a Swiss Army knife.

this one I purchased just for the sheer beauty of the thing....even hubby thinks it is well made. where I keep it and how I use it is yet to be determined but i'm sure I will enjoy it!

admittedly, it was stiff to open when I first tried.....and thus I know that the point is extremely sharp.........

MZ, if you figure out how to close it left handed, let me know. I'm baffled AND left handed.

It's funny about being a lefty. I won a bare-knuckle playground fight when I was 8, because the nasty little boy, who was bullying me, was watching my RIGHT hand. Never saw the left hook coming...

I have not yet figured out how to open it with one hand using my right hand and i'm right handed!

sigh.

and i'm so mechanically challenged that hubby had to show me how to close it....now i'm a pro at that but still not one handed.

sigh sigh.

Ok, here's how.

Hold the knife in your right hand, blade opening up, like this

Put your right index finger on the bumpy triangle that sticks out of the back of the knife ( the non-blade side) and push with your index, firmly. Keep your other hand out of the way at this time.

And Bam! Rainbow Blade! Be careful, it happens very fast. (Be careful, period....)

I want credit for the snazzy matching teal manicure. And also for being able to open a very sharp knife with one hand and take a picture, at the same time, with the other hand...

Hope this helps. I can make this work to open it left handed too, by putting my left thumb on the jeans-clip and pushing on the bumpy triangle with my left index. (Will someone tell me the technical name for the bumpy triangle? Yoshi?)

UPDATE: Someone PM'd me with the technical term for the bumpy triangle thingie! It's called a "blade protrusion". I thought it was a little non-intuitive, but whatever. Anything for precision of language...

But let's get real, I practiced for a week before I really got it right...

I case anyone needs to know why a person would carry a lighter around, you can toast marshmallows, melt the ends of synthetic rope to keep them from fraying, or save your life if you get caught in a blizzard. Or, you could light a fine cigar...

Grantar2, Bonnie and MZ, I do occasionally eat salami, receive letters which need to be opened, slice apples away from home and stab a chunk of cheese from a platter. Who knows if I'll ever need to slice someone's t-shirt off to make a bandage, but it's always good to be prepared.

Thereby I just ordered a Rainbow Leek. So I'll be ready for anything when the time comes.

BK, since you have TWO, one for each hand, can you figure out the left handed close? I can't do it.

I didn't mean to start up the Rainbow Mania again, but I'm not sorry....

Don't marry or move in together before you're both at least 25.
Don't have children until you're married five years or at least age 30.
Put 10% of your salary into savings every month no matter how broke you are.
Don't ever screw around with the IRS.
Keep a handgun on your bedside table.
Don't smart-mouth judges, or cops who stop you on the road.

I love this talk of all things rainbow! I'm sitting here wishing I had two like BadKitty. And matching teal nail polish like Bonnie.

In fall and winter, mine resides clipped to my boot. In spring and summer, it lives on my front pocket of my shorts. I find all manner of use for it in daily life.

Oh, and that Zippo lighter is tempting me! This rainbow craze could get expensive. Carry on, Ladies, carry on.

Glock Girl in CA, the rainbow craze has created it's own issue on the holster front. Turns out only two materials can be anodized rainbow. Aluminum, and titanium. (not sure what the zippo is made of)

But for holster clips and concho's I haven't found either material used.

Bonnie,

I have shed my blood for you.

But, alas, I was not able to figure out an easy way of closing the knife left handed. The frame lock (the little piece you press down to get the knife to close) is a right handed operation or otherwise requires a two-hand process when left-handed.

I'm ALSO left-handed (are we all left-handed rainbow lovers around here?) and have never gotten it closed one-handed. I can open it with my left, but two hands to close. We better stop trying now that we've got blood squirting around this forum!

Funny I am also a lefty. Most Zippos are brass, but they can plate them with a variety of finishes
