Default 415 Sap

Hey Guys,

Going to be in the LA area in april. Was wondering if anyone knows which uniform shops in the area sell the Gonzales 415 style Sap? Wanted to pick one up. If they wouldnt want to sell on my out of state creds, have some local LEO buddies that would help me out, they just werenít sure who carried them.

Thanks

Hi CT, I'm sorry I can't answer your question about a B&M store right now, off the top of my head, but, in case you can't find one, you can also check with http://d3protection.com/ (I haven't dealt with them, just came across their website awhile back...)

I don't really call ever seeing them for sale at any local LE shops. An enterprising member of the department used to make them to order for the troops with their info engraved into them. This was years ago, sorry not much help here.

Thanks for the replies. I did hear that at one time the LASD emporium stores sold them as the 415 is the only sap approved for carry/use by the LASD. Don’t know if they still do carry them. I was told that Gonzales stopped making them years ago and the most recent ones sold at the emporiums were made by a retired LASD deputy in Idaho.

Here are a two pictures of the one Bobby referred to - newer LASD deputy made on the left, original Gonzalez 415 on the right. The new 415 weighs 20.3 oz, the old 415 weighs 21.9 oz. The new one is much more flexible - holding it upright vertically, it's easy to bend it left or right until the top hits 9 or 3 o'clock. The old one only bends to about 11 or 1 o'clock. I think I got mine back in the early 2000's. I recently contacted the deputy who made mine - he's still making them for $80 (fwiw, he also makes patrol notebooks $50, inside the pants holsters $40, regular pancake holsters $45, and pancake holsters with weapon light $60). I emailed him the other day to see if he could make one to a custom specified weight, but I haven't heard back from him yet. Btw, I'll be at our old academy on Tuesday, I'll try to take a look in our emporium (but I don't remember the last time I saw one there)...

Samuelx,

Thanks for the info...he does not have a website, just email? Keep me updated on the emporium if you can make it in.

I used to have a 245 sap that I inherited form an another deputy when he retired. I gave it to a friend when I retired. I should kept it, and I could give it to you.

I'd check the North county emporium, but it burned to the ground along with my trailer... Which is a bit disturbing, because I'll have to check tomorrow to see if my sap was in said burned up trailer. I'm hoping I left it in my locker instead of my warbag... which burned up in said trailer. It's one of the newer ones from the retired deputy in Idaho.

Haha... Thanks for the concern. Insurance payed enough that I ended up with a check for $600 and I ended up putting it towards buying a Beretta so not so bad. I checked this morning and my sap is in my locker so that's good.

I lost all my training videos, some books, a couple range uniforms and a little bit of gear, and some basic RV supplies, but not too much stuff, and it could have been way worse, so it makes for a good story, and a *****in' funeral video for the trailer. It was good enough that the electricians had to stop working because they were laughing so much at the "Tears in Heaven" being played over the patrol car PA and a Fire Engine showed up a few minutes later to check if we were OK.

We'll get a motor home in the next year or so that will fit our family way better.

I just ordered one from http://d3protection.com he has Sgt. Gonzales (RIP) templates and he melts his own lead. Check him out. It is a 30 day lead time. I looked around galls, goodies, emporium, etc. No one has them.

Sorry to hear that Bob passed. I remember that all the firestone "Stoney Boys" all carried a 415 or 245 . I got mine from him at the ELA station.

I carried a 415 for years until some POS “liberated” it from my war bag.

Just an update on my 415 quest in case anyone else was looking.

Bill Lopez a retired LASD deputy runs Lopez Leathers out of Athol Idaho. He maks the 415 and a few off duty holsters. Bill said he was taught by Gonzales and his 415 is pretty much an original Gonzales design. Bill stated the emporium at one time carried his 415. He sent one out to me and the quality and design is excellent.

A current LASD deputy sells a 415 by word of mouth within the Dept. The style is slightly different from the original 415 by his own admission based on improvements that he favors over the original. I was fortunate enough to grab one from him and the quality is excellent.

Lastly, Allstate recently obtained the original Gonzalez patterns and is going to start producing them.

Be Safe!

I didn't know ppl still carried saps. I think they are kinda cool but definitely not allowed to carry one. I could see it as a show piece though.

Not many still do (very few agencies still authorize them). Itís a shame because they are great for close in work or as a last ditch weapon rolling around on the side of the road with someone. Unfortunately, they are always lumped in with the era when they were carried with no training and used as a melon splitter. With modern training and regulations itís a non issue. If you are authorized to use an impact weapon and you strike in an ďapproved zoneĒ it really doesnít make a difference if you use a straight baton, PR24, expandable, sap, flashlight, etc.
