Default Question: Having a class out-of-state, what to do with ammo?

Having a scheduled class out-of-state. Nevada is confirmed, and Utah is still in planning. Each class recommends 1,000 rounds across two-days.

So, considering the Kaliforniastan laws, how would you manage? Say, would you buy ammo in California and bring it over. This saves you the problem of having to answer for "importing" back left-overs. OR, buy ammunition off-state, and just dump the mag at the end of class.

Thanks in advanced for any advice?

Cheers~~~!!!

If Nevada and in Vegas or pahrump call ammo supply warehouse. Good pricing and can arrange pick up.

Yes, I was thinking of getting something local. It will definitely be cheaper than here in SoCal.

That said, aint Ammo Supply Warehouse in Pahrump? My class will be in Boulder City. BTW, my class will NOT be with Front Sight.

What to do with the leftover ammo, if ever? Magazine dump?

last class i went to the instructor let me ship it to him...at the end of the class i had 5 boxes or so left over, ended up giving them away to a couple of shooters and the instructor. someone else ended up selling a couple of boxes to some of the other participants at a very good discount.

Are you driving or flying to your classes? That’ll be your main decision maker. If your driving, I wouldn’t worry about it. If your flying, you’ll need to check with the airlines on the quantity (usually by weight)you can carry.
The simple facts are that if you get checked by any officer while reentering California, they’ll be looking for other things way before ammunition especially the few hundred remaining out of a 1000 round case.

Airline regulations is 5kg (11 lbs) per person in factory or similar packaging where rounds are not touching each other. I have never been bothered by airline personnel in regards to MTM boxes, though some people have.

We all just geocash it in the desert just across the state line.

This is a question you ask the host or instructor. They'll have an address for you to ship to.

I don't quite understand the "eek". I've been doing this for years.

When I traveled to teach a class, I'd just give the host whatever leftover ammo I had. No big deal, it wasn't like it was hundreds of rounds.

At Gunsite, they had a box at the front of the room that you could leave ammo in. They used it for the free military member classes that they ran

You can fly with 11#s. You can also ship either UPS or FedEx to your destination hotel or range. It's not really as hard as you think.

Good morning!

And thanks for all the responses... I think I now know what to do.

To take a step back, my concern is less of how to bring ammo into Nevada; but what to do with the leftovers...

Hahaha!!! I guess, yep... Better safe than sorry...

Though improbable, the possibility is NOT zero. Just wouldn't want the hassle.

JJ Racaza. Was supposed to take his class a few weeks back, before the West Coast Brass Fest. Unfortunately, 6 of the 9 students canceled in the last minute making in not feasible for JJ to come here to Komiefornia.

Cheers,

If your flying, keep it under the 11# and in the original boxes, youíll be good to go. Just make sure you have zero powder residue Ďon you, also make sure there are no empty casing that have worked their way into your pockets or carryon bags. Iíve had class mates get busted for this. Not a huge ordeal but frustrating enough.
If your driving, donít sweat it too much. All of my hunting is out of state and I pack a few guns and ammo across the border numerous times a year. Zero issues. I just donít display my stuff for the world to see. Itís packed well and under other gear or under packing blankets.
Look you purchased or made the ammo here in kommifornia, if your really worried bring the original receipt with you. Itís not like your smuggling huge quantities of ammo across state lines for resale. Your bringing back what you havenít shot up. Realistically if your pulled over and the officer is a raging anti gun person, heís going to find anything and everything wrong with your weapons first then the ammo second.

The current law allows residents to bring so much (~200 rounds or less?) back with them.

Another solution is to stay late to practice and shoot the ammo.
