Default Cheap .308 or 7.62x51 ammo?

I just picked up 25 boxes of Herter's for $199.75 shipped, is this the cheapest I can expect to find for .308? I have some nicer ammo for hunting, but I will shoot at the range a fair amount too, which means lots of cheapo is great. I would love to buy reloads, or support sponsors, but I'm looking for deals comparable to $0.40 a pop.

Do you know if these are magnetic rounds? Chances are they're re-branded Wolfs like their .223 rounds.

Yep, they're super cheap, to be shot at a range. Not brass.

I know 7.62x51 NATO fits a .308, but I've never heard that 7.62x54R was interchangeable. Please explain!

Everytime I hear "magnetic" I think thank god I live in NorCal where this is a nonissue at ranges. SoCal would hate my AK-74

I don't think they were sugesting you could shoot 7.62X54R in your rifle. They met you should get a rifle that shoots 7.62X54R

Hopefully now that the rainy season has begun, we will be able to shoot steel ammo at Burro Canyon soon.

My range has no rules about non-brass, is it just rust, or something else that is the issue?

Exactly. Seeing as the title of your thread is "cheap higher caliber ammo?", I don't think you can get much cheaper but still higher caliber than 7.62 x 54r.

Most surplus 7.62 x 54r ammunition will run about .20 cents per round, especially if you buy in bulk (440 round spam can for about $90 shipped).

I began to understand that on the first reply, and it just seems that no one has an answer to the question in the body of the message. It is nice to know that x54R is cheaper, very cool, but does anyone know of a cheap source for .308/7.62x51 NATO?

I am in So-Cal, and my range doesn't care, nor does anyone with property out here... Steel-core ammo is what they should be stating, as it is not magnetic ammo in any way (AFAIK), but steel (iron), that is attracted to magnets...
My shovel isn't magnetic, but will be attracted to a magnet.

Edit thread title to .308 , 54r is same caliber as your rifle and cheaper.

Even if I was asking about 54R, no one has said where you can get it cheap anyway. I'm asking about sources.

Default .308 ammo

Well, I'm thoroughly confused by people going back and forth between .308 and 7.62x54R in this thread. If it's .308 the OP has, then:

If you have already accumulated some brass...

With these guys offering a reloading service, there's no reason to shoot crap ammo. The price is good for what could be considered pseudo-premium ammo (if you provide decent brass). In threads over on Sniper's Hide they say you can send them your brass to be reloaded, if you provide your own bullets too, the price is ridiculously cheap. Contact them for more info.

Southwest Ammunition reloading service...

They had more business than they could handle for a while, I think the shipping times have gotten much better. To their credit, they were giving free extra ammo for the delays. Accuracy reports seem to be very positive, I don't own a .308 so I haven't tried it.

Their deals on 9mm and .308/7.62x51 are amazing too. Thank you so much!
