Some of the things on the list are kind of silly. Tazers and martial arts training? Really?

Drugs as in medications yes. I don't drink, but have a few bottles of jack stored just for barter. Cigarrettes and chew will be hot items as well.

I think barter in the following categories has merit:
Vices/addictions: cigs, booze
Personals: TP, soap, razors, tampons (don't laugh, when faced with using a "rag", I'm sure tampons will merit fair exchange from the ladies), condoms.
Hardware: 16/12 penny nails, screws, etc
Other: needle and thread, plastic bags, canning jars, 22lr

These would all have more value than gold/silver in long-term SHTF and are not particularly bulky or expensive currently.

As far as skills, the old homesteading/kitchen skills that used to be "the woman's place" will be invaluable. It's great to go grow a garden or slaughter a pig, but how do you store it through the lean times? Definitely not in my skill set.

A brother in law of mine I've referenced here many times as just getting the picture and starting to prepare (he now has a 10/22 wahoo) was talking with me a month ago about not being able to afford gold or even much silver. He was concerned about not being able to barter for what he would need and could not get.....I told him to buy an extra 24 roll bundle of TP each stop at Costco. Stack it up where the mice won't get it and it will be as good as gold if SHTF.

one of the major things that ppl forget from the old days is the trade of minerals and SALT! they don't have salt everywhere, and if you expect to survive you'll need a good supply of salt to keep bodily/life functions working properly. you'll need iron too.

I agree that having small glass flasks of booze, cartons of cigarettes (selling indivual packs) and canned food items for trade would easily compare to having gold coins on hand today.

Oh another thing that may be worth its weight in gold is clean rolls of toilet paper for trade!!!!! Maybe bars of soap too if the SHTF scenario lasts a long long time.

Ferfal always recommends hand-to-hand combat training.

I guess a tazer is for people who are anti-gun.

I agree, booze & cigs need to be added. Great barter items.

Better yet, add knowing how to distill as a skillset. That way you can make various types of alcohol for drinking and medical use. Plus a great way to purify water.

ANYTHING is going to be worth more than it is now, in relative terms.

The ultimate angle is to agree not to beat or shoot the other seller/buyer. Expect a lot of that.

Spices..

For centuries pepper was worth it's weight in gold.. salt can become fairly valuable as well...

I don't have to wait till SHTF, I'm willing to barter off my grumpy 88 year old mother right now! Will take one box of .22lr or 6 buckshot shells in 12 ga.

I kid!

Toilet paper is going to be worth it's weight in gold if SHTF. Everyone prefers soft charmin to pages out of a phone book!

Good idea, I would imagine precooked and vacuum sealed would work too.

A lot of food for thought. I just picked up a couple of old sewing machines 1912 and 1918 White rotary sewing machines. They are in great condition. They work only need to replace the leather belts and clean them up. No electricity needed just leg power. Additionally some old Cobbler tools for shoe repair and info on making leather boots and shoes (seems like a lost trade). Need to look at attaining info on leather tanning as well.

going to be plenty of dead wearing really expensive hiking boots.. TP, Soap, Toothpaste, liqour. Rice, beans , bullets & filtration .. thats about it for survival through the dying time. TP will be nice for a while, but going to be alot of empty houses with linens that can be cut up and used as feild expedient TP, going to be able to scavage alot of stuff.

ive got 5 of these. im 100% convinced that water and ammo are going to be the big two in a SHTF, of course im thinking it will be an earthquake or pandemic that will hit us.

Interesting, I haven't seen those before. That would be a great home/base camp set up, I need to look into those.

I agree that safe water will be a hot commodity when SHTF. I have been working on my water preparedness for a while, Cholera and Dysentary don't sound like much fun

Antibiotic's like neosporian. I watched this program on History about SHTF scenario's and bacteria was killer. I asked my wife a nurse and she said you could die form an infected paper cut. Neosporian and rubbing alcohol. So cheap..

Have a SH@T load of rechargeable stuff, like lanterns, batteries etc. And have a way to recharge them. And open up a damn battery Blockbuster and barter for a charge....

Trade skills imho , if I can give you heat, or wire up your genset, or fabricate something for you, fix something for you, it's not a detriment. My skills cannot be stolen.

If you're going to stockpile for women's sanitary needs, the long term strategy would be to have a shelf-full of something like the DivaCup. Washable and reusable, any woman with any sense would spend a lot more bartering for one of those than for a temporary solution. They're great for backpacking trips.

Thanks for keeping an eye on us - added these to my list.

Excuse my ignorance - if you were buying for an unknown female would size matter? Smaller or larger model more adaptable if not the correct size?

Thanks for that link. I have given into the fact that prepping for my parents and in laws is falling on me, or it just wouldnt get done. I have one good quality filter that wont be leaving my sight, so these will be great makeshift ones for them.

Man I like this! Any of you other guys speak to its effectiveness? It looks easy to assemble and use and relatively cost effective with a use life of like 6-8 months!

I almost pulled the trigger on a off road go-cart with the idea of rigging it with a converted alternator for mobile TIG welding/power inverter for emergency 115/230v power generation and bugout vehicle.

The ability to get places and weld stuff will be valuable.

I do need to stock up on clotting agent, antibiotics, decongestants, pain killers and other medical necessities.

Grains will probably be too valuable to distill liquor, so a few cases of decent burbon would go far.

Disposable razors would be good for small trades. Soap on a rope. Bug spray. 3M masks.
