PolyCase Ammo
"Reduced carbon emission," is their selling point? Really?
Has to be a trick, looks like Liberal ammo.... http://www.polycaseammo.com/

.380 ammo generally seems to be overpriced and undersupplied. Maybe they thought there was an opportunity there?

Nearly a buck a round for .380? No thanks, I'll just keep rolling my own.

I am not a representative of Polycase, but I have been following them through a friend that is close to the company. First, I can tell you this is by no means liberal ammo (whatever that is). The owner is a retired Army officer and very far to the right politically. I thought it interesting that someone thought that 'Green" is their "selling point", I have never picked up on that. It should be cheaper across the board. I guess the XTPs are higher, but I was told that it should be cheaper in general. Polycase is in no way connected to PCP Ammunition. PCP has been working on rifle ammo for about 3 years. Polycase is doing only pistol ammo for now. They say .45 acp will be ready for SHOT Show in mid-January. See the Article at Guns.com for more info.

$20.50 for .380 XTP Hollow Points from Poly Case, nonreloadable
$22.55 for .380 XTP Hollow Points from Hornady Brass cased, reloadable For me to buy poly case ammo, it would have to come in at a price point similar to steel/aluminum due to its non-reloadable nature |

I agree with CEDaytonaRydr, this is not the first crack at polymer ammo. However, I am optimistic about this stuff though. From what I understand about previous attempts there was always a problem of the rim separating from the plastic case. I have fired about 100 rounds of Polycase personally and have not had that issue. I haven't even seen any partial separation. The folks in the company have fired thousands and they say there are no issues with tearing away. From what I am told about the proprietary design it is almost impossible to pull the rim from the polymer with the force of an extractor.

Why would I buy non reloadable plastic ammo when I can be green and recycle my brass cases?

love your posts. cracks me up thinking about the pron in the 5th dimension. my mind is blown back on topic I have shot and still have some 223 that is this "plastic" case. I used it in a bolt action Savage and in a Colt AR. In both instances it shot like crap vs the cheap American Eagle and the Winchester i had at the time. The shots were about 16-18 inches low at 200 yard when compared to the other brass. I also had a few cases get stuck in the chamber, not good. If this stuff is prone to the same sticking many have associated with poly case stuff it would be very bad in a self defense situation. 380 is not all that powerful and follow up shots may be needed to ward off a perp. if the poly case acts up and fails to allow 100% reliable function of the firearm it should remain as target/plinking ammo and not for SD carry.

Wouldn't these deform if they stay in the mags too long like 12g in saiga mags?

IIRC there was a company offering plastic .38 Spl. cases in the 80's. Thay claimed that the cases were reloadable, and offered a hand press to do it. Anyone here remember them?

Back in the day I think a lot more people reloaded shotshells. They didn't have $22/100 boxes from Wally World back then.

Ran across Polycase at SHOT Show 2013, and had the chance to shoot about 400 hundred rounds, and you'd expect it to be different, but it's not.
They let me take a few hundred round home, so here is a quick review. They currently only have .380, but they told me that 9mm and .45 are in the works. If it's cheaper, I'll definitely look at it for matches and practice.

Oh boy, another miracle ammo development. Anybody ever heard of the Dardick Pistol? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dardick_tround The Dardick Model 1500 was a magazine fed REVOLVER that used nylon encased trounds for ammunition. Here's a longer video explaining the whole concept: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKE2YwtcTXE
Then there was the Gyrojet firearms that had little spin stabilized mini rockets for ammunition. I actually was at a demonstration of the Gygrojet pistol and carbine that was held at the Coyote Point Rifle and Pistol Range when I worked there. No case at all, the entire little rocket was the bullet, so the firearm was very light, in fact the barrel had holes through it to allow the rocket exhaust to escape. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyrojet Then there was the Daisy VL .22 rifle that used caseless .22 ammo. The bullet was bonded to a propellant that was ignited by a hot blast of air from a conventional spring piston air gun mechanism. The system didn't produce any advantages over the conventional .22 RF system so it was manufactured for only a couple of years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daisy_V/L So it goes, every now and then someone comes up with some new ammunition innovation, steel cases, aluminum cases, polymer cases, hybrid cases, no cases. One of the earliest firearms was the Volcanic Rifles and Pistols which was nothing more than a hollow bullet filled with powder that was held in place by a priming disk. http://www.winchestercollector.org/guns/volcanic.shtml As for me, I'll stick to brass cases. No matter what cleverness we possess, somethings are just not able to be improved, such as the toilet seat. |

It is funny, when the plastic handguns first came out I had the same kind of feeling for them as many do for plastic ammo on these threads. Now my 10mm glocks are my "go to" handguns, of course they still are in the "go to if nothing longer is close enough" category, but definitely top of the sure thing ladder in handguns.
I know a lot of guys that have sworn for decades they would never reload, fewer these days, but still many. If Ben Bernanke gets his way with commodity prices (and all other prices), polycased ammo might be in everyone's future that don't have Joe Logic's horde of brass. Just sayin...
