Default Russia to destroy 5,000,000 guns

saw it on one of my Mosine sights, it came from shot gun news. Russia to destroy their old rifles and pistols by 2015.
this does not pass the smell test. i am sure these guns are worth more than what the scraping will pay them. does the UN and our tax dollars come to mind.

They are commies, the always exaggerate. They will probably destroy none of them. Those guns will end up sold to Ukraine or some former Soviet country and then sold here.

If all else fails, they will be sent to Syria.

The way I always heard it, Russian Capture Mosins weren't firearms anymore because they removed the cleaning rods, per international agreement. Maybe more of the same this time.

Very interesting. All I see about this in Shotgun News is this article from last year:

Quote:
The Russian Ministry of Defense intends to utilize (read destroy and melt down) 4 million older model guns by the year 2015. These will be pulled from the stockpiles of estimated 16 million guns that are no longer in service with Russian Armed Forces. Roughly 6.45 million of these guns are no longer serviceable.

Though the types were not officially announced, a little birdie whispered to me that most of the guns slotted for destruction are Mosin rifles and carbines, SKS carbines, Nagant revolvers, TT33 Tula Tokarev pistols, a huge number of AKM automatic rifles, RPK and RPK-74 light machine guns and a small number of older PK medium machine guns.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade is planning to send these guns to the factories where they were produced for disposal. Apparently this would keep in business plants like Molot and create 240 jobs. Meanwhile, Russia’s biggest arsenal Izhmash, had to suspend its destruction program after misplacing approximately 80 AKM rifles.
It's good to know they still have around 16 million guns in storage. I'd love to get one of the RPKs. (A real one, not a Century knock-off.)

I predict Ukraine will soon find yet another newly discovered stash of 5 million Soviet surplus guns.

"misplaced 80 akm rifles"

SURE...they were most likely misplaced in the back of Yuri's Yugo...

JUST like when Russia said it was gonna break down its nuclear stock pile for Obummer?? SURE.... i can see the tt's and the nagant revolvers maybe... but the heavy stuff will find its way out and into the market...

That was the captured K98s. They destroyed the cleaning rods claiming that this met the grounds of the treaty at the time.

Let them destroy them. I'm not a big Mosin fan. I respect it for what it is, one of the rifles that defeated Nazi Germany, but that's about it.

There are a lot of smart folks in Russian and one of them will think "Why don't we sell them to the Americans and make a lot of money?" They'll come around.

I read the book written about a year and half ago about the AK and it's history. It won't happen. Those firearms are as good as hard currency. Sold yes, destroyed, no.

Now that I think about it, this probably explains why the latest M38s and M44s imports we've seen have that funky "Made in Russia" inscription.

Also if the are really in a hurry to dump 5 million guns by 2014, we might have a new, maybe short-lived, glut of Mosins again.

Save the Mosins. Save the Mosins. Then those that buy them do not buy what we want, and our prices stay lower.

The soviets have not met a dollar they did'nt like. Unless they get more for the scrap than what they can sell the complete rifle for, they won't be destroyed. The soviets are great at saying one thing and doing another.

The big question is,if they have 5 million guns will they find their way to the US or will the administration block them.

If you've read up on any of the Post Soviet era smuggling/privatization wars etc these guns wont be destroyed. Pay off to this guy and the next, and the next, and magically they're destroyed on paper and loaded up into planes for all points around the globe.

This would spell financial ruin for me, because I would buy a hundred of them. Even the thought of a single case of minty Russian SKS's is too awesome to believe (Although the Canadians seem to get them all the time)

I think there is something lost in translation here.

I imagine that by "destroy", they mean rearsenal, obliterate paper records, create new inventory lists with terms like "sporting purposes", and reallocate shipping to your nearest exporter.

Step #3: PROFIT!

I hope alot of the sks's reach the states, I have been looking for a reasonably priced companion for my saiga. Same ammo and from the same factory would be awesome. I am a youngster but even I remember seeing sks's for $300-$400 for good quality ones, it would be amazing to see that again.

When I was visiting Canada this past year, I walked into a gun shop that had tons of Soviet SKS's. Made me cry a little. I think there is some sort of Clinton signed Executive Order that prevents them from selling directly to us.

OK, you really want to feel bad? At a gun show in Riverside 15 years or so ago, there was a vendor with two long tables stacked 3 to four high with Russian SKS rifles. He wanted $88 a piece for them and then you could just buy it and walk out with long gun. THAT, was the good old days!

If there is anything I know about Russia, it is that they are honest, straightforward and impeccable at keeping paperwork. I'm sure these will never see the light of day.

I get the first SVT40 off the boat.

Russia should set up an importer and sell them for $100 each. 1/2 a billion dollars wouldn't hurt their treasury at all - that's not counting the ammo sales.
