I dabbled in water cooling, but my days of overclocking have been over since the P4 era. I was never much of a gamer, so it was more just because I could. With the newer multi-cores, not ever pushing my system to the limits except for running PCMark, spending more on guns, and spending more on my car (more worthy of "overclocking" since I do tend to push its limits), I just haven't seen the need for it the last few years. I do remember the TechTV episode where they were trying different substances for submersion cooling. The commercial coolant worked so well they cooled the system below the minimum operating temp.

I considered the Corsair H80 on my last build but ended up staying with the good old Coolermaster Hyper Plus. I have the Roomy Coolermaster 690 II Advanced Case and overheating has never really been an issue. I currently run an i5-3570k @ 4.2ghz and even during gaming i never get much over 60c. It's just a moderate overclock but well worth the efforts required to get their. I stacked the case with 2 extra 140mm fans and it's very quite, just the way I planned

Built a custom watercooled system for a new rig I put together a few years ago, ran great.
Then I decided to change the videocard... didn't feel like swapping the videocard waterblock and adding another to the loop(went from a single card to a crossfire setup). System still ran great just cooling the CPU. Then I had to swap the motherboard... complete pain in the ***. Ran great with the new board. Decided to build a new system last year. With major component changes being a massive PITA with watercooling, I opted to go back to air. The cheap sealed units would be easier, but they simply aren't good enough. Putting together a good custom setup wasn't hard, maintenance was easy the couple of times I flushed it due to smart planning of tubing, but having to gut the entire thing for a mobo change, or needing to re-do tubing/blocks for a videocard change was just terrible. I see that there's finally a waterblock available for my gtx590, but at $150, plus a CPU block, plus a pump, plus radiators... it's just not worth it. |

I thought about it when I built my system a few years back but I prefer air-cooled. 6 Scythe 120mm fans at 1900rpm pushing 110cfm each. I'm good. Sounds like a tornado everytime my PC's running... thank goodness for fan controllers. My comp never gets close to max temps even when doing a 360deg high quality rendering. Plus it's easier to swap hardware out when upgrading or replacing.
When you've got other hobbies like cars and guns... well, priorities and funds get placed elsewhere. |

I'm always moving parts around between cases and swapping things. Water cooling is just a pain in the butt... Also, lugging that heavy crap to a LAN party would not be fun. We have a guy who has to bring his rig in on a dolly... no thanks.

After reading some reviews I got a Corsair H80 when I built my new system. I'm pleased with the noise reduction. But quite frankly, I'd never do a full custom set up.
Also, RIP Dangerden. Maybe... Whatever.

I've been an IT guy for over 30 years. I've scrapped out many MAC computers that had water cooling and no matter what you do, water is going to leak out and ruin stuff.
'Nuff said.

I had my PC watercooled for a while just for fun and cool factor. Problem is you still need fans for the radiator so there's still noise. Even did the video card.
Now I have an awesome Thermalright cooler that's just as good. From this: To this: |

went back to air on my i7 and running 5ghz ..was on Water with my Q6600 @ 3.8ghz and before that with my opteron 165 @ 2.6ghz
My old system running 2 x1900xt's with an opteron 165 Q66 + 8800gtx now I'm running one of these

Of course there's also a difference in switching to watercooling for dealing with heat output of overclocking, and switching for silence. That being said, my own setup was simply to keep things quiet with only a mild OC involved. For the people claiming watercooling isn't safe... sure if you do it wrong it can be disastrous. If you take the time to learn how to install and test things, it's far less problematic than say... maintaining a peltier cooled setup at near freezing temperatures(now that was something that actually caused a horrific problem... never thought CPU pins could oxidize and become stuck in the socket like that). |

The system I put together a couple years ago is running nice and coooool.
Components; »Obsidian 800D »CPU: Intel Core i7 940 OC'd to 4.0 »Motherboard: Evga X58 »EVGA GeForce GTX 295 »CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB (3x2GB) Water cool parts; »RAD - EK XT360, EK XT260 & XSPC RS120 »CPU Block - Alphacool H14 Yellowstone BRB »Koolance Northbridge/Southbridge Water Block »Black Feeser Mosfet Block »EK-FC295 GTX GPU Water block »EK-Multioption RES 250 »2 x Swiftech MCP355™ Water Pump »XSPC Dual Acrylic Top My water loop goes as follows: 360RAD -> CPU-> 120RAD -> Motherboard blocks -> Res -> Dual 355 Pumps -> 240RAD -> GPU -> 360RAD The pics have my old GPU in there. Had a kludged together cooling system on my last computer.
Haven't been pushing the current one to the point where water cooling is needed yet. I myself like the submerged cooling systems. Easier than phase change or cascade, but more effective than water. Even some places have had good luck with submerged cooling servers.

Stuffed an MSI 990FXA into an older Lian Li aluminum case last year for desktop duties once I got my home office together. Recently picked up an older Mac Pro (2008), and now the 990 sounds like a wind tunnel by comparison. I've been tempted to pick up one of the packaged units for noise reduction, but the only place to mount it would be the side cover which won't work so well. If I start thinking about a new case, maybe...

All the years of gaming and such, I never built a computer that required that much cooling. A couple of 120's and a good air cooled processor, and I was in like Flinn.

It's not that it is required or needs that much, it's the pleasure of building it. Why do people mod anything, their car or heck even firearms.

Back in the dark ages, some IBM mainframes were water cooled. People said it was fine, but electricity and water in close proximity gives me the willies.

water cooling is ghetto...
UNLESS it is needed, just keep it out.

Hm, I'm actually finding the results of this thread to be rather interesting... then again, bringing up this topic outside of the usual crazy overclocking/modding enthusiast forums tends to provide a small dose of perspective.
As a side note, if anyone's interested in listening to people talking about computer stuff, I was brought on as a guest for the latest episode of the Mod Zoo podcast partially because they wanted to do another feature on watercooling: http://themodzoo.com/podcast/The%20M...%20-%20Ep9.mp3 |

Newer chips generally run cooler. My rig is by no means weak, but I still aircool. I don't overclock and the case has good circulation (lots and lots of fans). If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Water and electronics is still a taboo relationship in my view.

The typical coolant used in DIY setups is just distilled water... which is fairly non-conductive until it either picks up enough contaminants, encounters a high enough voltage, seeps into an area where there's only a tiny gap between contact points, or a combination of the three. Many people will add dyes and stuff (like corrosion inhibitors, if they're mixing incompatible metals) to their coolant which increases its electrical conductivity... but the general rule is don't build a system that leaks.
There are pre-mixed "non-conductive" coolants available but they're all water based and, arguably, aren't any safer than distilled water. Very few ever venture into experimenting with truly non-conductive coolants like Fluorinert. |
