Smile 8mm Reloading-Pics of Groups Added

Hello Guys,

I have started to reload for my German K98. I am a new reloader, but I am already in love with this new side of the firearms hobby. I used Privy 198gr HPBTs over 40-45 grains of IMR-4895. Unfortunately, the results were less than impressive. What powders and bullets are you Mauser reloaders using? I also have 200grn Sierra Matchkings that I plan on trying.

Thanks in advance.

-Tim

Barnes makes some .323 that work.

When I loaded for 7.92M, Used the excellent Nosler 180gr Ballistic tips and IMR4065. I used to get the Noslers on sale at Midway for $12 and some change for a box of 50, what are they now?

I've got a Persian that a prior owner D&T'd. Got it to use in the "open" class of a vintage military rifle silhouette match. I mounted a Bushnell 10x40 Elite 3200 scope on it.

I use 200 grain Nosler Custom Competitions with IMR 4064 powder. I took the rifle to the range to check zero before the monthly match. It shot a 5-shot, .9 MOA group at 300 yards with the 200 grainers. This is typical for the rifle. I've shot a number of 39/40's with this rifle and load in the match, which includes 10 rounds each at 220, 330, 420, and 550 yards.

Here is another group with the same load shot at 100 yards.

I just use the 150 grain Sierra soft points and 45.5 grains Varget. It shoots great in my M98/29 Persian Mauser. I did try 200 grain HPBT match bullets and they worked great, but it was overkill for 200 yard steel targets.

How are you testing?

How does the rifle shoot with factory or surplus ammo? Is it a RC rifle? If so, have you gone through this thread: http://forums.gunboards.com/showthre...an-capture-98k

I have had good luck with IMR4064 using Hornady 196gr match bullets, and also with Varget and Sierra 175 Gamekings in a couple different rifles.

#1) Point Rifle at Target
#2) Squeeze Trigger at said Target.
#3) Repeat as many times as necessary or until ammo runs out or both.
#4) Return Home
#5) Report Range Actives on Calguns.net Forthwith.

I was slow firing only 5 rounds per 15 minute cease fire at 50yds. It is not a RC. Its a BYF all matching, but it was cut back about three inches at the front. I don't know who cut it, since I inherited the rifle from my grandmother. I will bring out some surplus to try next time. I am going to get some 4084 and try that with both the privy and matching bullets.

You ever shine a light down the bore to verify if there is rifling?

Have seen a few lately that rival my smooth bore muskets.

So from a bench? On sandbags, on your elbows? Using the iron sights I assume, what was your aim point on the target?

Trying to aim center bull with the factory sights is not easy to do even if you have excellent eyes, try a 6:00 hold on the black circle on that target, or maybe print some of the K98 acceptance targets I posted in this thread:
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?t=1152019

They work pretty well with the factory sights, using the bottom of the black as an aim point.

Even so, 3-3.6 MOA is not great by modern standards, but within the German guidelines for acceptance, inside a 12 CM circle at 100M, which is a little over 4 MOA.

Iron sights from the bench using sand bags. I was aiming dead center.

Finding an aiming point on your target! woowww-slow down. You are going too fast or this is a trick question.

You might want to seat the bullets way out to touch the rifling if you can.
