If it is a dirty milsurp- spend the time to get the bore clean...
The match shooters have a combo Kroil and JB bore compound Soak the patch in kroil- run it 10 times.... Wait a few min- then dry patches until clean Wrap a patch and add some JB mud... run it 10-20 times Then run dry patches until clean Repeat You can soak a dirty bore overnight with hoppes to get powder out 50 year old copper deposits take some time to remove

I use "Butches Bore Shine" on a new to me corrosive shot milsurp. PAX

For the last 25 or so years I have been only using CLP. I quit trying to get those supper clean patches from the bore years ago. You can spend a lot of time cleaning and just shooting one round will put you back a square one.
I have found that most surplus rifles shoot better when not over cleaned.

Once upon a time I took my 91/30 with me on a four day excursion that involved mountain climbing. After a nice day of shooting I had realized that my hoppes no. 9 had spilled all over my bag. What resulted was a bit of rust. I used butches bore shine, and it worked great. If it can do rust, I'm sure it can handle anything you give it!

I use Hoppes for all my guns. I agree with Gunny, clean enough is good enough. I will spend extra time on a really dirty bore once before and after shooting, but after that I just go for mostly clean patches. Most of the ammo I shoot is my reloads and it is much cleaner than the old suplus ammo so cleanup is pretty easy.
