Changing direction on guns
By changing, I mean getting into a different category.
Im a, handgun first, rifle second enthusiast. Now Im moving into shotguns. Since shooting ranges in Contra Costa County are sparse, Im leaning toward the Shotgun aspect of shooting. Im not a shotgun guy, never really liked them, but since Martinez is soo close, I think Im changing direction on shooting, for now. Im not going to ***** about the current range situation in CoCoCounty or livermore, just looking for info on Martinez and what peoples experiances are with the shotgun range there? Thats all. |

Martinez has good Skeet and Trap ranges. All you need is a stock field shotgun like an 870 or 500 with a 26 or 28" barrel. You will need to get some Target shells loaded with 7 1/2 or #8 shot.
Take a ride out there and take a look what is out there Great way to learn how to run a shotgun There is also Diablo Rod and Gun in Concord ....Membership at Diablo is 30 bucks per year |

I haven't been there in many years since I stopped shooting trap competitively. However, I used to shoot events in Martinez fairly frequently and always enjoyed the people and facility.
Clay target shooting is a lot of fun. I'm sure you will enjoy yourself OP. |

Thanks for the input guys.
I just figured, why stop going to the range, try something new. Trap and skeet seem like it would be a nice change from shooting at paper or steel. Shooting at a moving target is sounding more and more appealing. Action pistol is nice, but still your shooting at a stationary target for the most part. I have a couple of shotguns, not sure what I will end up using. |

I was kinda in the same boat as you. It’s a hour one way to a outdoor rifle range and like 20 minutes to a indoor pistol range and I got bored and switched it up. I picked up a mossberg jm pro 8 shot and I hit up birds landing in rio vista,I usually go early every Sunday when it isn’t miserable outside. I put over 2K rounds through it there. I’d highly recommend them, they have a lot of different stands to shoot from.

I picked up a beretta 1301 and have a few others but never shoot them. My Winchester is the only one Ive shot. The Beretta will be my main shotgun, others are there just for fun. |

I got the clays bug about 3 years ago, I now shoot skeet, sporting clays and 5 stand, pretty much shoot every weekend, 4 o/u and 3 reloaders later lol Have met many new friends and shoot in 2 clubs now, be careful it's fun and addicting

Well, the comments coming in are making me think, this will be a nice change.
I dont know anything about skeet or trap, so I guess I will be learning soon on the does and donts. I guess I could Google a bunch of info, but Id rater hear from people here on what I should be getting for ammo and any new equipment I may need for my new venture. If I have to pass up hunting again this year, then clay targets it will have to be. |

First you'll need a suitable shotgun. Usually a 12 gauge shooting light loads. Barrel lengths are somewhat fashionable but somewhere between 26 and 32 inches. Your trap gun can be a single shot but you'll need two shots for skeet. Do you have something like that?

Shotguns are a lot of fun, but to be honest I do best with the pigeons lying around on the ground. I’ve always run pumps, but the few times I’ve used superimposed, I’ve really been impressed!
See I went the other way with things: I started with deer rifles, got into mil-surp rifles, then shotguns, added black powder and most recently, centerfire handguns.

I have a winchester model 12 that I can use or a Beretta 1301. My others are not really practical.

I got a special order for one from a customer, I liked it so much I ordered two more! They are REALLY cool and pretty unique! I'm super impressed by them, and it's something that's very different |

Thats why I want a change. I want something moving, not sitting that I can take my time to hit. I like challenges and performance, thats why I have the Beretta 1301. It has a shorter barrel and its a semi-auto. Not the norm for skeet or trap, so Im told.

Why?
You don't want one anyway, ..so why do it?
I've liked the Mossberg 500, but don't own it. For home defense, if it's ever used, be prepared to repair, patch & paint your drywall.... and probably replace a few display items. Finally, be prepared for the hearing loss. |

Action pistol is a ton of fun, but the targets for the most part are sill stationary and there is no change in the scene. With skeet, I see improving on tracking and focus. When something is thrown into the air, its never thrown the exact same way. Im really looking forward to this now. |

I have several shotguns. Im sure its not quite as loud as a 338 LPM with a Titan Brake. Hang out around that for 20 rounds and everything else sounds supressed.

Yeah, $1,050 isn't cheap for a shotgun but it's definitely not the most expensive shotgun I've ever sold. In person they're pretty freaking cool. I ordered one up for a client on special order and was so impressed with it I ordered up two more for inventory! I'm going to have a hard time selling the third one though...

So after looking into to this a little more, I think Clay a 5 stand is more of what Im looking for.
I think skeet will be to consistent as I have read. It will be a good start to get into the groov of things, but the challenge seems to be with clays. If any of you guys are compitition ahotgun shooters, please let me know which of the target shooting platforms are the most challenging. I want to inprove on all aspects of shotguns. Thanks for all of the input. |

Just dont tell any of the people you encounter at the trap or skeet range, that you own an AR15 or any semiauto firearm of any kind. Seriously, most shotgunners I've ever met are worse than the Commie gungrabbers. Especially the ones from the Bay Area.

I've always been more into rifles and handguns than shotguns until I started working part time at a range and tried out clays. It's like mini golf with a shotgun. Now I need to get a semi or pump gun since all I have is a single shot break action.

I dont really care what other people think of other guns. If Im shooting clay and other gun topics come up, then, it will be what it will be.
I just love the sport. Now its time to try something new. It also seems that shooting shotguns is a lot cheaper then any other rifle. Even the gun itself is cheaper in cost and maintenance. Looks like I may have found a new activity. |

Op, sporting clays(5 stand being a derivative of such) is the most challenging of the clay target sports. You encounter a much wider variety of angles, target speeds, and even target sizes.
As far as it being cheaper than rifle shooting, it's like any other discipline or hobby. It can be as affordable or expensive as you choose to make it. You can shoot a $500 pump or a $10,000 Perazzi, etc. |

I wasn't attempting to intimidate the OP, if that's the way you took it. He inferred he was looking for a challenge and I was confirming it would serve the purpose. I was a decent trap shooter at one time. I just hunt ducks a lot and shoot sporting clays now and then these days. I suck at it but it's heck of a lot of fun nonetheless!
