Default Opinions on Safe

Hey everyone,

Been in the market for a gun safe and have tossed around the idea of buying a Liberty safe.

I recently came across Sportsman Steel Safe that is located in Long Beach the city I work in so I visited and looks like I'll be purchasing one of their safes!

It's being built at the moment.
60" tall 25" wide and 26" deep. 10 gauge steel.

Gonna have a hammer tone paint job. And will be going in to pick out the interior I want for it.

The Safe has a 90 min fire rating and they will come out to open it up in case of Fire.

Out the door is $2200 but they're selling it to me for well below. Price is pretty low I feel bad posting it on a public forum, but includes delivery, bolt down, and a dehumidifier.

What's everyone think?

I don't know much about safes, but it seems small. Always buy twice bigger than you need.

IMO, the go-to comparison is still Sturdy and it's 7 gauge (thicker than 10ga) steel.

Compare your features, size, and prices with Sturdy and you will have your answer, either way.

Most installers that 'bolt down' don't do four bolts, they do less (one or two bolts into the cement floor). I would ask how much for them to do four bolts.

Sportsman Steel Safe turns out a nice product but has a spotty reputation as a business. Not sure how well it's deserved. When you've got your safe, please post an update and let us know how the whole transaction works out.

I can reccomend SunWelding safes made in the USA here in Simi Valley. The key to safe integerity is the amount of steel in the safe.

I own three of their safes;
Vault series ; 1/2" rolled steel plate door / 1/4 " rolled plate steel body
Cavalry series ; 3/8" rolled plate steel door / 3/16 "rolled plate steel body

I also put a stainless steel liner into all safes to resist attempts to torch into them.

If what you have is with protecting, it's worth protecting well.

Buy the biggest, best safe you can afford. I love my Remington-branded Liberty safe, but in retrospect, I should have bought a bigger one. Of course, you need to make sure you have room for it first.

I would stay away from sportsman safe
I would look at Sun Welding and Amsec.
Check out DeanSafe.com, the customer service is excellent.
Buy as big as you can, you will put a lot of other valuables in the safe.

You can cut through 10 gauge with a fire Axe.

AMSEC BF safe is the best residential security container for the money. 1/2" solid plate door, side walls two layers steel with 2" concrete between. Walls = 7 gage or for a little more you can get a heavy duty with the inner layer of steel 1/4" thick. TL 30 is the next step up but in a 60"x30" it will weight about 3,000- 4,000 lbs and will probably have to go in the garage at that weight.

The only reason they are bolting it down is because you are close. I bought a Pentagon safe, Custom.
1/4" Body 3/8 Door and Electronic Lock with Gold Plating on handle I also had them install 3 hinges on the door. I wanted a light set but they could not do it, for whatever reason. I installed my own LED lights. I got the earlier version of fireproofing. You will get the newer proofing. Safe still working great.

Bigger is not better ,more is better. All safes are subject to failure and if you have 1 large jammed safe all ,or most guns are locked in so get smaller safes .My idea is half big game - handguns - ar s and shotguns - cash (and prescription meds if applicable ) in each so no matter the season or need the proper tools can be accessed.

The safes use a relatively light gauge skin.

To say the business has a "spotty" reputation is the understatement of the year. Sportsman / Pentagon has a terrible reputation over the years.

...and since the boss is an arsehole what he says goes. Again, check out these douche bags in depth before ordering anything. You can get a far better safe for less money and hassle.

Well I think I've heard enough negative here about them that I'm gonna stay away. Especially if they're gonna be getting some coin from me I'd rather spend it on something better quality. Thanks everyone for the responses I trust everyone here who has given me input has more knowledge in gun safes than me

Just bought a 39 long gun safe xtremeduty model it is from steelwater gunsafes www.steelwatergunsafes.com. The customer service was unbelievable, free shipping from north Carolina to San Diego. I ordered it on Sunday night it was delivered Wednesday morning weighs in around 800lb. Watch the videos of them attempting to break into my model. The quality, fit and finish is brilliant and would recommend these to anyone. I am not affiliated to steelwater. You will not be disappointed if you buy from these guys I know I wasn't.I ordered with the dry rod dehumidifier option and just purchased an led light kit with motion sensor which I'm installing tomorrow. Came in around $1800 .

The best thing regardless of which safe you buy is to put a liberty safe Elertus safe alert device in it . It will text u when the Dave is opened or bumped or the temperature rises. All safes can be broken in to with time but this simple device will let you know if it is actually happening

Steelwater Xtreme Duty – 2 Hr Fire – HD593924

120 Minute Fireproof
Fire protection for 120 Minutes with exterior temperatures reaching up to 1875 degrees.
Extra Thick Steel Construction
Composite style constructed door with an added 1/4 inch solid steel plate and thick 9 gauge body.
Gear Drive Linkage Systems
Protects against prying, punching, and drill attacks better than a cam drive system.
(18) 1 1/2 " Locking Bolts
(18) Massive locking bolts add maximum strength to the door to resist pry attacks.
HD593924-1LaGard UL Listed Group 2 Lock
An upgraded combination lock that matches the reliability and security of the safe.
8X Drill Resistant Hard Plate
8x's Larger hard plate that protects not only the lock but also the re-locker, gear drive, & linkages.
(2) Re-Locking Devices
Two internal re-lockers keep the safe secure in case the lock is attacked or punched.
Reinforced Bolt Down Holes
1/4 Inch steel plates in all 4 bottom corners for more security when bolted down.

It is 9 gauge and 1/4inch steel and 8 times drill resistant hard plate plus I store powder in there so it'll be a bomb if anyone torches it . It is Chinese made with oversight by USA quality inspectors ....watch the videos then watch the infamous Costco cannon safe break in , took less than 5 minutes to get in....and tell me how bad mine is in comparison

Without a doubt, based on the specs, a lot better than the Costco products but I feel anything made in china is suspect. I think the steel is suspect, the manufacturing is suspect and I try hard to avoid buying anything made in china.I hate to support a communist economy that is challenging our own, I hold the Chinese responsible for the little hermit kingdom they protected and continue to protect (NKoreA) and I hate supporting a cruel psychopathic culture that treats dogs in particular and animals in general the way the Chinese do.

All that said, it is a step up from the costco safe

Excellent delivery straight to the garage where I wanted it . Cannot say anything bad about my experience. Already installed led light kit with movement sensor

Yep just slightly ...I could break into any Costco safe with a single prybar and five minutes of effort ...good luck with getting into the steelwater gun safe...everything you buy is almost always Chinese these days ....if I could have bought a quality USA made safe around the same price and spec I probably would have but this was a great option for me...oh I am also partial to non USA vehicles but don't hold that against me lol ....

Default DeanSafe

Buy the biggest safe you can afford, eventually you'll outgrow a smaller and lighter one. DeanSafe has an excellent selection in all price ranges and terrific customer service. Here's the one I bought (1600lbs) a fort knox executive.

Did you check out Sun Welding down in Similar Valley?....another great place for good quality RSC's (aka "gun safes").

I did. I need to email Christine back, but I ended up going with a Fort Knox M2 3/16" steel body gun safe for 300 bucks more bolted down to my garage from west coast safes

The bigger the safe, the heavier the safe and the more fire proof the safer the safe is. bolt it to the floor. A safe slows the bad guy down. a Cheap safe will slow the crash and grab doper thief down enough . What is the value of stuff in you safe? Answer in your head then go from there . Moving a large heavey safe is harder than a smaller lighter safe. Quality is always better but what exactly is needed? Buy once then cry once.
