Default The Mauser Chronicles, West Coast Style

I picked up a couple nice K98 stock sets a few months ago for a good price and I have been looking for barreled receivers to drop into them. My previous experience of piecing parts together (started with a phosphated BNZ 45 barreled receiver) into a serviceable Mauser was a very rewarding experience, so here we are.

I happened to log onto another board and saw a good candidate pop up, although it was already a complete rifle. The price was great so I jumped on it.

DOT 44 RC K98
Great Bore
Not peened or defaced
Bayonet w/scabbard (I think German marked, have to double check)
Cleaning Rod, capture screws, sight hood, nice repro sling all there.
A handful of 8mm dummy rounds
Ugly and incorrect early war walnut? stock. Sloppy shellack but completely intact, no cracks or issues. Russian force matched.

At $425 OTD I really couldn't lose. I confess that I was going to at least test fit the receiver into one of my above mentioned stocks, as this DOT 44 has great metal and no rust at all. In my hurry to buy it I overlooked the fact that (it was mentioned in the ad) that it has a Timney Trigger. I have never fooled with these things and I would never install one on a K98, but it is an admittedly excellent device.

Suffice to say, the existing stock had been relieved a bit to accommodate the Timney. Invisible when assembled, but the Timney would not fit on my replacement stock without modification. So.... this rifle is staying as is. I am hoping to make it one of my shooters. I did not have a K98 with this factory code either so it is a keeper.

Here are a few pics:

I hope to have a range report when there is a bit of a break in the weather!

That was a smoking price on the total package.

Easy decision to buy that at $425.
