Eotech 512 on my M4...same one I used in Afghanistan on the Army-issued M4...considered participating in the recall until I threw it on the civvie M4 about a year after I got home last time and it was dead on with no adjustment necessary.

Lucid HD7 on my Sig 516 with a screw in 3X magnifier that I use sometimes. The Lucid is nice for the price, but I'd like to get an ACOG.

Still need something for my Sig 716, but I plan to spend some $$$ on that along with a Leupold Mk4 for my Sage EBR build.

I've had a Trijicon ECOS on my little Block II clone for about 5 years now and I just can't quit it. I'm so over the BDC crap, but I love that damn sight and the reticle is more usable than a horseshoe or chevron. The top mounted RMR is just the fastest transition from far to close and back that I've used and is far more versatile than a 45 degree offset with its increased height over bore. Also, contrary to others, I love the short eye relief. The field of view is great. Others will think differently and that's great. Ergonomically it is the best all around fit for me and my preferred shooting style.

So, the thing I learned I don't like about variable optics on my carbine over the years is the resulting ergos and compromises one has to make in order to accommodate the long eye relief. I like having my stock pretty tight, so that means pushing a variable optic pretty far forward and (a)upsetting the balance of the gun and (b)taking away space on my handguard for...what else...my hand. Close eye relief of the ACOG eliminates that for me.
HOWEVER, I have a Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x32 on a 20" Larue Stealth that I'm just fine with extending the stock on, because, well...bipod and barrier support mitigates the weight of that front-heavy pig. For the distances I shoot with it(800+), I should probably have something with a little more mag, but the x32 bell looks cool. That's important, too. I would probably go with a higher magnification if I were shooting at unreasonably small targets out that far.

Not many will choose the best optic for them on the firs try unless they have access to all different types beforehand. But what I've learned to do is consider my projected use of the gun, my shooting style and the pros and cons of the different ergonomics that each of the different type of optics will present.

The Leapers/UTG/Accushot lineup is getting to be a very good value. As mentioned before I have pair of 3-9x32 bug busters, 1-4.5x28. I just recently bought a UTG 4x32 T4 Compact Prismatic.

I was looking at a Burris AR-332 and the Vortex Spitfire 3x for the etched reticle and compactness. However, I hated the busyness of the reticles on both of them.

I saw the UTG T4 mil-dot and thought it was simple enough and at less than half the price I figured I could slap it on a .22LR if it wasn't up to snuff on a 5.56. Turns out the glass and light gathering isn't as good as the Vortex, however, it wasn't bad for half the price. I took it to the range and it zero'd quickly and held through 100 rounds of M855. The UTG stuff is getting better and better all the time.

Aimpoint PRO on my Daniel Defense and Trijicon 1-4x w triangle reticle on my LMT MRP.

So many different options. I'd like to try some 1-6 or 1-8's but don't feel like going through the hassle. Practice with what I have.

For AR10 I have a 3.5x ACOG.

The new BURRIS 1-6X24 RT6 for $325 (street price) and the Vortex PST GenII 1-6x24 for around $500 (Cabela's discounts) are value leaders, IMHO. I'd like to try a Burris sometime.

300blk has a Burris AR332
6x45 has a Bushnell 6.5x20
6.5 Grendel has a Nikko Stirling 4-16 FFP
18" BHW barreled main Competition AR has a Burris XTR II 1-8 FFP
16" Rev barreled Competition AR has a Vortex SE 1-6 soon to be replaced by a Burris RT6
16" Wilson barreled AR has a Sig red dot
10.5 SBR has an Armson OEG
9MM AR9 has a Tirjicon SRS red dot

The Burris RT6 is amazing value, and honestly you have to get into a Razor HD 1-6 to get as good a glass.
RTS Reticle at SHOT SHOW Sorry for the camera phone but it gives a good idea how really clear it is)
