Default Recoil Pad

I have a Ruger #3 that someone cut the stock to shorten the length of pull.
I want to install a recoil pad, but the butt measures only 4"x 1 1/2".
Can a pad be ground down that small?
Thanks for your help.

Swifty...I appreciate your suggestions. The problem is, Pachmayr doesn't say how much you can grind 'em down.
They tell how big the pad is to start, but not how much can be taken off without it coming apart.

The Limbsaver grind-to-fit pads come with a template in the package with the minimum grind size.

Look at page 6 here:

Unfortunately its on the packaging. on a decelerator there is a steel insert and you have about 3/16" on the outside up to a 1/4" on the larger pads before you get close to the insert. Some of their pads don't have that insert and you can grind those down as thin as you can get away with.

I do recoil pad installs. I have all the tooling

Randall, I owe you an apology. I thought you had to buy the pad to get the template. If I had read your post more thoroughly, I would've seen that they're available on line...now I know.
Thanks.
