The rifle in my post above was sharing a lower with my 300 BLK (With the PRI free float), but the upper is entirely different. At this point, I've built so many versions of my rifles I have a hard time remembering which parts went into what version, LOL. The overall trend over the years though has been to shorter and lighter weight rifles while still emphasizing mid to long range performance. It's been a bit of a pendulum I guess. I started out with my first 5.56 AR about 15 years ago. 20" heavy stainless barrel with a heavy old school YHM railed free float tube and A2 stock. With optics I think it was pushing about 13.5 to 14 pounds. After that was an 18" SPR-ish clone, then a 16" fluted stainless middy (seen in my first post after several make-overs), then a 14.5" middy with pinned KX3 and PA red dot, then another 16" middy, then another SPR, another 14.5" in 300 BLK and finally this 14.5" in 5.56. I do like the light weight and handling of the 14.5" rifles, but you can definitely see a degradation in long range performance once you go less than 16" with a 5.56. Even with the heavier 75-77 grain bullets, the consistency at 650 yards is garbage. 450-500 yards is still pretty decent though, no problems hitting a torso sized (11X18) steel plate. FWIW, I think 16" barrels are the ideal compromise between weight, velocity and accuracy. Short of competition guns, I have yet to see a legitimate reason to run anything longer than 18" on a 5.56 rifle. My current go-to rifle is the latest version (Ver. 4.0 or 5.0 now ) of my old SPR build with a DPMS Mk-12 barrel. I've got it down to about 10.5 pounds with a 1-6X scope, and it covers all the bases pretty well. Anything within the effective range of the cartridge, from point blank out to about 800 yards is within the rifles capabilities. I think that's really the point of the RECCE and SPR rifles anyway, to effectively use the 5.56 round across the entire spectrum of it's performance envelope without being committed to any one particular role.

I guess this is a "Recce" although I didn't plan it out that way, it just sort of happened.
What I wanted was a free floated stainless barrel with a variable optic that could reach out a little farther than an M4. I got my barrel from Lilja, it has the same profile and specs as the original Crane barrels. Scope is an SWFA 1-4HD and I can't give that company enough praise; this was my third purchase from SWFA and for the money you can't beat their glass or features. |

My last config before I parted it out. I was getting way too bored of how easy it was to print sub MOA groups and how I couldn't shoot fast like a chrome lined barrel to save on barrel life lol.
