Default What to Say to Strangers about Your Rifle Case?

Invariably, when I travel with longarms at airports, I get asked while I'm waiting in line, or waiting for the shuttle, what's in the huge case?

They ask what's in it. I've been asked if I was a bass player. They are friendly inquiries.

I'm a pretty cold person. It is not my nature to expound on the contents of my ginormous case.

Any suggestions? I don't look like a guitar player.

ETA: The forum software must have misdirected this post from OT to 2A.

I carry around two types of cases: Pelican boxes and Cabela's/Plano ammo boxes. And guess what, I use them for radio stuff (ham) and gun stuff. So you never know does that Pelican box I'm carrying have radios or guns? I ain't tellin.

I always tell them them the truth. It's a rifle or rifles and that I'm going (or coming back from) a hunting trip.

You could also get really quite, smile in a very creepy way and raise your eyebrows repeatedly.

In all seriousness I'd probably just say "delicate equipment" and leave it at that.

Firstly, it baffles me who would be asking you in the first place.
I wouldn't have the audacity to stand in-line with people and start asking around what's in their luggage.
Its none of mine or any one's business......

Who's asking you? TSA? Airport security? Or just a some nosey bored chum standing next to you?

The only real response (if you feel you need tell someone what you're carrying at all) is "My luggage".
If they persist, they're obviously trying to get more information about you and your property for whatever reason.

If you still feel you have give an anwer to some stranger who's asking you due to its long size of case...then "Fishing poles" would be the #2 answer.

"Just my personal belongings." That's all they need to know. I don't care if I'm rude to nosy people. They should mind their own business about what's in your sealed cases. You could just lie and say golf clubs or fishing poles. I'm pretty sure if you asked somebody else like a pretty girl what's in her bag that she will just ignore you and give you a weird look.

In a normal tone of voice, "My firearms. A couple high power rifles and a few handguns." I then explain the laws on traveling with firearms to them if they want.

Hiding in the dark about who we are and what we do is how we got ourselves in to this mess.

"What's in that big case?"

"A Pērkonstat. It's named after the God of Lightning. It's a pnuematic hydrostat renditioning unit with dual basemodes for quantifying electrical discharges outside aircraft...primarily used aboard airliners that frequently travel through highly charged thunderstorm areas. "

"Huh...what's it do exactly?"

"It measures and records the kilowatts of electricity traveling around and through the aircraft and is designed to withstand over a billion volts of energy. Lightning strikes that would fry the electronics and everything else on board can't hurt this baby. Did you know lightning claims more victims each year than do snowstorms, hurricanes, and tornadoes? True story. Getting truer every year. They lost 55 planes (mostly private jets) in the air last year to thunderheads. At MIT we nicknamed the research project FRYING THE FRIENDLY SKIES. "

I am so full of you-know-what. Every good lie begins with enough seemingly realistic facts and big words to be believable...as proven by the current President.
