Default LA-Area Gun Stores Rated

Time to update my list from 2015. A lot has changed in 2 years. Best to worst.
  • The #1 best place to get sporting goods is . . . . the place you're at right this moment. Happily that has not changed.
  • CALGUNS.NET 5 stars

  • Ammo Bros - Cerritos - 5 stars - The whole reason I decided to update my list is due to visiting Ammo Bros for the first time last week. This place is GREAT!! Store is huge, massive selection, supremely friendly staff, very smooth PPT.
    https://www.yelp.com/biz/ammo-brothers-cerritos

  • ALAMO Pawn - West Covina - 5 stars - the gold standard in how a sporting good operation should be run. Good people, efficient and drama-free handling of PPTs, reasonable selection.
    http://www.yelp.com/biz/alamo-jewelr...an-west-covina

  • CAP Tactical - Lawndale - 4 stars - I've done several PPT here. They are very chill, very knowledgable, and can have unexpectedly good prices.
    https://www.yelp.com/biz/cap-tactica...rms-lawndale-4

  • LAX Ammo - Inglewood - 4 stars - I'm only rating the STORE, not the Range (Calguns has a monthly meetup here).
If you shop around the internet you can find better prices than LAX, but generally not LOTS better after you factor in shipping. Before LAX Ammo, there was basically no retail storefront that you could drive up to on any given day and buy a truckload of ammo at reasonable prices. It's on my way to ASR / OTGC / Piru / DM / APTS and it is VERY convenient to have the option of making a 15 minute pit stop en route for some extra ammo. I appreciate that a lot. They also sell optics and various accessories, but they do not sell firearms here. The staff are ultra cool (at least to me.) The thing that is going to get some peoples' panties twisted is that the prices in the store are higher than the prices on their website, and they will not match.
    https://www.yelp.com/biz/lax-ammo-inglewood

  • ADDAX Tactical - San Fernando - 4 stars - I really liked the vibe of the store and the people. They have a stellar reputation in the CGN community.
    http://www.yelp.com/biz/addax-tactical-san-fernando-2

  • P&D Gun Supply - San Fernando - 4 stars - ran several PPT thru them. Store is the definition of hole in the wall one-man operation (on my first visit I drove by it 2 times without seeing it) but Dmitry is very chill and knowledgable and often has stuff that is hard to find.
    http://www.yelp.com/biz/pd-gun-suppl...l-san-fernando

  • TURNER'S .............. this is hard to rate. Turner's Signal Hill has done very very right by me on 3 visits so I would give that specific location at least 4 stars. A lot of people don't like Turner's and I can't dispute their objections. There is wide variation from location to location. If you have a good relationship with with specific individuals, Turner's can be good. They are, however, always a difficult place for PPTs. They require a bunch of their own Turner's-specific PPT paperwork and they are hyper-strict with the letter of every PPT rule plus some extra made-up rules of their own.

  • CARSON Pawn (satellite store of Alamo) - Carson - 3 stars (reduced from 5)
I used to like this place a lot. Very clean store, easy parking, close to me, fair prices. Reasons for downgrade:
    1. They are currently not selling any de-featured EBRs.
    2. They refused to handle a PPT for me when I arrived at 5:30PM, because they close the store at 6:00PM.
    http://www.yelp.com/biz/carson-jewelry-and-loan-carson

  • Martin Retting - Culver City - 3 stars
Pros: Big store, wide selection, good location for people who live on the Westside.
Cons: They have a geographic monopoly, there is no other gun store for miles around, and many affluent people live nearby. They have a bit of an attitude which is going to put off inexperienced shoppers. Prices not so good. No system to handle a crowd so uncivilized shoppers can and will try to cut you. Don't let them. Bad reputation for PPT.
    https://www.yelp.com/biz/martin-b-retting-culver-city

These ratings reflect only my PERSONAL experiences and the experiences of people that I am directly acquainted with.

Thanks for the work.

Crosshairs USA could be added maybe.

I'll just say I have had several transactions at Riflegear and all have gone well, much better than Turners and Retting.

Burbank ammo and guns.
I've bought at least 6 guns here, in stock and special order. Customer service is great, no problems showing you anything and talking about features etc. No rush, and good ammo selection.

Uh oh, expect all the RG fanboys and the owner to come in to defend their honor. Actually I'm amazed someone rated Retting over Riflegear. I personally do due to the type guns they sell fitting my needs better but I'd rate Retting 2 star due to some of their employees like Ponytail.

Addax is a solid little shop with very fair pricing. I recently went to Guns Direct in Burbank and was very impressed with selection and service and a really nice shop.

  • TURNER'S .............. this is hard to rate. A lot of people don't like them and I can't dispute their objections HOWEVER speaking purely subjectively, my experiences with Turners have been mostly without issues. There is wide variation from location to location. If you have a good relationship with with specific individuals, Turner's can be good. They are, however, always a difficult place for PPTs. They require a bunch of their own Turner's-specific PPT paperwork and they are hyper-strict with the letter of every PPT rule.

Cons: They have a geographic monopoly, there is no other gun store for miles around, and many affluent people live nearby. They have a bit of an attitude which is going to put off inexperienced shoppers. Their prices are generally not so good. Often busy and you will need to wait, which is tricky because they don't have a number system (as of my last visit about a year ago) so uncivilized shoppers can and will try to cut you. Don't let them. I've never tried to PPT here myself, but they have a bad reputation for it.
    https://www.yelp.com/biz/martin-b-retting-culver-city

  • RIFLEGEAR - Fountain Valley - 1 star (reduced from 4)
    Reason for downgrade:
Bad customer service episode happend to a friend, which was then compounded by Riflegear staff coming here on Calguns and defending their own misconduct. This is the equivalent of that bad driver who almost hit you, then cussed at you and gestured rudely because you honked to prevent the accident, as if it were YOUR fault.
    http://www.yelp.com/biz/riflegear-fountain-valley

These ratings reflect only my PERSONAL experiences and the experiences of people that I am directly acquainted with.
Can you provide a link to the thread where your friend had a problem with RG?

OP, go to Guns Direct in Burbank for the best customer service in town! I love that place.

I also like Dmitry and his hole in the wall gun shop in San Fernando

Rating Alamo Jewelry & Loan 5 stars as a gun shop is a stretch maybe, as their selection is limited. Great place, fast PPT's, but one of the the new kids they hired (white, taller side of average, short hair) has a real attitude and complains about PPT's

Most Turner's are crap and waste hours of your life. AVOID. Except Reseda is okay...

Ammo Bros is great gun shop, though not the cheapest. Slow side for PPT's though. Ontario location has crazy good customer service. Cerritos is great too.

Oscar's Gun Works in San Gabriel (formerly Bain & Davis) is okay, decent selection of guns, basic cheap gunsmith on site. SLOW ppt's and some of the salesmen are crabby, but it's decent.

That sucks about Riflegear. They are one of the better shops to me. They seem to usually really try to have good customer service and great selection. Oh well

Martin B. Retting is fun to visit and handle the rifles on the racks and look for used stuff. Sucks for PPT's, service is very hit or miss, the Westside sucks in general. I never make a trip to go there, but if I'm in the area I might stop by....

Thanks for sharing your list!

Let me clarify, Carson Pawn is a great place. I am happy that they are what they are and where they are. When they sort out the featureless EBR situation they'll be 4-stars again.

Riflegear is an OK place, 19 out of 20 people will have no problems there. The issue that I mentioned was not even a big deal, but their categorical denial that they did anything wrong is what personally rubs me ultra-wrong and lost me as a customer until the end of time.

Oscars/Bain and Davis gunsmithing got sloppy and haphazard and a lot of runaround with promises and timeframes. Do business with them at your own risk.

I find Reseda to be the absolute worst Turners and I have been to all of them and purchased guns at most of them. The particularly bad Reseda manager I call the turd I last saw working at that newer shop in Burbank that occupies the spot Aegis once did.

Turner's participation in Steele Peak cleanups made a very positive impression on me. Every business is gonna have some bad apples.

I've been to ASR at least 4 times this year and I never noticed they opened a NEW GUN STORE. What tha h311 lol.

You did not notice it because it is the size of a closet. They run some decent sales occasionally though. I find it interesting that Turners basically abandoned their CGN subforum and no longer does CGN sales.

I am in the process of a site that has a directory of gun ranges, public indoor/out and private and of course locations people would like to share.

Thought about adding Gun stores but didn't want people to think I was getting sponsored or funds directly.

Sorry to see the bad review of Riflegear.
I sat at a petition table at Riflegear 3 or more hours per day, 5 or 6 days per week for 2 months during the Gunmageddon petition project.
I never saw an issue, just professionalism.
If there is a long wait, it is because they are very popular and busy.
I have made multiple purchases at Riflgear as well and when your number comes up they are quick, efficient, professional and friendly.
There is no rah rah BS, just quiet efficiency.
I give them 5 stars.

He has been known to be a pain at MBR.

Before I had heard of this, I had recently bought my M&P 9 from him and it was easy.
I had all my paperwork and knew what I wanted.
That probably helped.

An infamous employee with a serious attitude problem bordering on mental issues. I have caught him on a good day where he has acted halfway human though. He has a greasy dirty looking ponytail.

A Google search of Retting ponytail will probably show a pic of him and a few posts about him.

Wow, there seem to be quite a number of less-than-satisfied folks out there who have dealt with this store. The search revealed a lot of very negative feedback data on consumer driven ratings, and there were some common traits describing general attitude and rude behavior. There were however some positive ratings, and at least one recurrent member of this forum who may(?) be an employee.
This sounds like a few characters at some of the public shooting ranges one reads about here as well.

Not really in LA area, but 2A Zone has outstanding service on PPTs and probably equally so on new purchases.

Orange County Firearms (a.k.a. OC Outdoors) in Costa Mesa has a very helpful and friendly staff. On Yelp, they have 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Check it out.

I need to find that thread where the young man gave up or postponed college because he got a job at Retting and he thought it was his calling in life or a career or something. I doubt ponytail is a member here but who knows?

I've done similar things to a few friends. Also sent not actual gay porn but close to one or two customers as packing material because they were being problematic and I really didn't want their business again anyhow. They didn't say anything maybe they didn't notice.

2A Zone is legendary, and deservedly so from what I've heard. Hope to get out there someday in person.

You play a perhaps dangerous game, what if they interpreted it as flirtation

Agree here. I've been to others in the area and IMO this is by far the best.

I got Chip McCormick 1911 and Sig P220 magazines there for maybe 5-10% more than online best deals. Plus there's a great Italian deli 2 doors down!

There is always 2 sides to a story with the truth sometimes somewhere in the middle so yes I'd still like to see this story as well.

Not everybody is willing to shop at Oak Tree for well known reasons they are still one star in my book and will be for the foreseeable future.

Addax seemed like a bunch of juveniles who were in over their head, but I seem to hold the minority view on that. Guess I missed the Italian deli part of the gun sale.

I've only gone to them for my new purchases (from both out-of-state FFL online purchases AND from their own stock). Similarly great experience.

To everyone else considering using them, I cannot recommend them enough. The owners are patient and nice (just a mom and pop operation) and the fees posted on their website are the cheapest I've seen in the area. I'm a very new gun-owner. They accommodate for a noob like me as well as the more knowledgeable.

J**** even walked me through glock field disassembly and gave advice on lube points after the waiting period. I just commented that it was my first handgun purchase, all the paperwork and money was done and he had no obligation to give me advice but did so anyway. I willingly drive the 30+ miles there (once to start DROS and then to pick up) because they are great. It seems like they really care about arming responsible CA citizens.

When I bought from Addax, I worked with Erick, and I have nothing bad to say about the guy. He was quick, polite, and helpful.

I've dealt with Nick and most recently Daniel, also very quick and polite.
