CA legal - "exploding" targets
I saw these on a U tube video....
https://www.umarexusa.com/products/big-blast-caps It is a cap you screw onto an empty soda pop bottle 16oz- 2 liters all use the same cap size You insert a needle inflator, same as for a basketball, football, volleyball, into the cap and pump the soda bottle up to 90-120 psi. When you shoot the bottle, it goes BOOM!!! Caps are Reusable until they get shot or lost.... Has anyone used these????

Doesn't look like they are widely available yet from what I can see.

Another thought, is a 2 liter cap big enough that you could use a sheet metal step bit to drill out and then pull in a valve stem?
http://m.ebay.com/itm/LOT-100-TR-413...%257Ciid%253A1 100 for $15 More danger as the valve stem has a lot of mass that could get launched

So standard stems are rated to 65 psi...
HP should work... .453 hole Tubeless Snap-In Valves for High-Pressure Tubeless Snap-In Valves for High Pressure Tubeless snap-in valves for high-pressure applications are designed for medium and heavy-duty trucks and trailers and must be used when recommended cold tire inflation pressures exceed 65 psi. High-pressure snap-in valves for .453" rim holes allow a maximum cold inflation pressure of 80 psi while those for .625" rim holes allow a maximum cold inflation pressure of 100 psi. Typically used in steel wheels, high-pressure snap-in valves combine a thicker rubber snap-in base with a metal barrel and a plastic cap. Effective lengths range from about 1-1/4" to 2".

Tying blaze orange streamers on the caps....
EDIT: I must confess I was sort of hoping for a minor accident when Bubba was out there resetting the tipped bottles, but the gun barrel was pointed in a safe direction I see now...

So, OP - didya ever buy any of the Big Blast Caps or try to make some of yer own? I saw a local WalMart had some in stock online for only $9.97 so I ordered a couple of 10-packs and will pick them up this afternoon. Hoping to get out this weekend to try them out!
More YouTube videos & info. The second video tests how much pressure different bottles can take before failing/exploding. I'm thinking I'll probably stay around 100PSI for a safety buffer. Last edited by WartHog; 09-22-2017 at 1:41 PM.. |

I tried them out up at the lake on Sunday. Pumped 2-liter and 16-20oz pop bottles up to 100psi with a bicycle pump - wonder how many 2-liter bottles filled to 100psi a Harbor Freight 11 gallon air tank pressurized to 125 psi would do?
They definitely are not Backyard-friendly - my brother was 1/4 mile up the lake away from me when I shot a 2-liter and said it sounded like a Centerfire Hunting Rifle going off. If you watch carefully in that testing video I linked to, you can see very small pieces of plastic bits/shrapnel being forcefully shot about by the bottles exploding. Gloves, Eye, and Hearing protection should be used when filling/handling filled bottles and any bystanders in the immediate area should at least be wearing eye protection and foam earplugs. I also would suggest only using bottles that are in excellent condition - nothing that has been crushed or distorted in any way to avoid possible weak spots in the plastic. These are not Toys so younguns should be allowed to fill/handle them only if they can be trusted to always follow safety procedures! Last edited by WartHog; 09-26-2017 at 11:11 AM.. |

From the few I've shot, pieces ranged from 1" diameter and up. Pieces were thrown up to 20' away. For the most part, the pieces were good sized.

Wow those things are no joke! What is the minimum air rifle someone has used to pop them - would a red ryder work or no way?

And why is that? As long as one picks up the debris, I don't see how there would be a issue? |

Let's see how long it take the Peoples Republik of Kalifornistan to ban this.

Saw them at Wally World the other day next to the ammo. I forget the exact price, but not expensive.

I used a tire fill stem and just drilled an appropriately sized hole in a Dr. Pepper screw top. A 20 oz Dr. Pepper bottle held 110psi, I tested it in the garage and sounded like a cannon shot when I hit it.

Finally got around to remembering that I had taken a couple of short videos of me shooting some soda bottles with the Big Blast Caps. The two liter bottles were pressurized to 150PSI and the small 16-20oz bottles 110PSI. The two liter bottles sounded at least as loud as a .223 rifle being fired! Used my .25 Marauder to shoot them.

A valve stem would probably work fine.
Back in the day, we made pneumatic pump-up potato cannons with these- pumped up to 100-110psi :O Scary to think about now that they are only rated to 65psi :P The actuator was a sprinkler valve hooked to some 9V batteries. Pretty quiet, the remaining air leaving after the potato fired sounds like a dying elephant |

What is the highest pressure anyone has pumped up a 2 liter soda bottle.
I have a friend that is having problem with peoples trucks trespassing on his posted land he wants to place a few in the road with a piece of cardboard with tacks in it to pop the bottle. with some red chalk line powder it should put up a nice red cloud of powder over the trespassers truck. I have a idea that the first trespasser drives over one will need a new set of underwear. |

Did you watch the testing video I posted a link to in post #14? I wont go over 120psi on a 2-liter myself after watching that video. I wear eye protection and use gloves when handling pressurized bottles.

TR600HP valve stems are rated for 100psi, heres a link to 25 for $7.27 I would definitely tie them off with a string to a little weight or something so they don't become projectiles Last edited by 1970gmc4x4; 03-25-2018 at 9:33 AM.. |

A fun way to plink targets.
I would imagine some colored dyes would make the excitement a wee bit better, i.e. red, orange, yellow explosions would be cool looking.

Tried these out a couple of weeks ago and they worked great. Using a cheap thin tubebicycle hand pump sucked though. Small bike tire air compressor or foot pump would be great.
They really give the kiddos a smile and keep them shooting longer. I was only pumping them up to 80 psi and some of the bottles were shooting 15-20' in the air
