Default Tumey Hills, what's the hike in like?

I'd like to pose a question to you guys. My buddy and I were hoping to make our first BLM trip tomorrow, and are debating between Panoche and Tumey. It sounds like Tumey is a better option, since this will be a day trip.

That said, I see it's closed to vehicles for fire season and we'll have to hoof in. We will be bringing 2 rifles, a shotgun, ammo for all three, targets, and water... How far of a hike is it into the areas that are good for shooting? is it crowded? I envision open sprawling land as soon as we enter the gate, just begging for target shooting, but I imagine that it might be "busy" on a weekend.

It's supposed to be 95* tomorrow. If it's going to be a several mile hike just to find a spot to shoot, maybe we'll wait for a better day.

Thanks for any info you can give.
