Default Looking to buy alot of 5.56 where to get it from?

I'm looking to buy 500-1000rds of 5.56 and wanted to know if it was worth it to wait for the big reno gun show comming up (which I probably will go to) or order off one of the internet ammo dealers.

Which internet dealers do you guys recommend and what kind of deals can I get at the reno show?

Also, are these M855 rounds legal if they're on a belt (holding more than 10 rds) here in CA? I've bought 7.62 in belts, but the belts were always broken up into ~4-6rd sections.
http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/catalo...ammo-223-556mm

While I'm at it...what rounds are legal to buy and shoot in CA (AP, incendiary, tracer, etc.)

Nope. Gotta be 10rds or less for each linked run.

Incendiary and tracers are both illegal---other than that I think you are good. AP is good to go--at least in rifle calibers. (There may be something additional for AP Pistol ammo.)

500 to 1,000 rounds is not even close to "a lot".

Widners has the best deal going for 5.56 m193. PRVI $350/1,000, no tax, including shipping.

1000 rounds isn't a lot, when you start carting away with 3000+ rounds of ammo from the Miwall booth and complain that you didn't have enough money to buy more, now that's a lot of ammo.

Sounds like someone is talking from experience... I might be the cart next to you, I hear the Reno show is worth the drive. I won't be able to make it to the SF show so I'll have to wait for Reno.

I'm a little confused as what M855 ammo is intended for. Its a 'penetrator' but not an AP round?

From what I gather the Miwall guys are the ones to see for cheap ammo (at least at the gun show). I figure they might be a little less expensive than ordering over the Internet and paying for shipping (even if shipping is 'included' you're still paying for it somehow).

How good are the deals at Miwall?

That's not a lot.

A LOT of ammo gets delivered on a train car to an ammo dump.

You have alot of ammo when...

1. You cant count it.
2. You count it by the pallet
3. You fear the safety of the entire neighborhood in the event of a fire.
4. You have to make a seperate U-haul truck run just for your ammo when you move.

Now... go get started!

Well it's a good start.

I've been shooting for a long time, like my signature says I'm more into .308/30-06 caliber weapons (and long range shooting) rather than .223/5.56s. I'm building my first 5.56mm rifle and am trying to figure out what a good deal is on 5.56 ammo. I've already checked that website, the extent of information specifically on the M855 round is "(United States): 5.56x45mm 62-grain FN SS109 ball cartridge." I've already looked into it further and learned more on its construction, still not clear on its purpose. I'm interested in the M885 specifically because of the weight/length of the bullet and its compatibility with the 1 in 9 twist of my barrel. Furthermore, its status as a military cartridge means it is relatively plentiful at a low price.

I termed the quantity I was interested in as 'alot' simply because it is more than one would normally purchase at the local gun store, I think most people would consider 50 boxes of ammo 'alot' in non-gun show or military supply situations.

Thank you for the list of online vendors, I wasn't aware of some of those.

If your looking for "a lot" of ammo . . . http://www.ammoworks.net/products_ammorks.html#223
I guess a pallets worth could be classified as "alot"
Anyone up for a Group Buy??

A couple things to ponder.
REAL M855 has a steel core and will not be allowed at many ranges.
Check your local range regulations before you buy a bunch of it.
Secondly, because it's current military cartridge in high demand, it's MORE EXPENSIVE than typical 55gr M193 type ammo.

I guess I was thinking about that backwards. 7.62 was/is a military cartridge, but since its used so much less than 5.56, and so much less than it was in the past, its easy to get, whereas 5.56 is the cartridge used by nearly any rifleman and many MGs.

You're probably the guy to ask since you're a barrel guy, am I correct in thinking that M855s are ideal for my 1:9 twist barrel? I understand that it has less to do with weight and more with bullet length/contact area with the barrel, and that heavier bullets tend to be longer. From what I gather, the general wisdom is the faster the twist, the longer bullet you should use, and thus by extension use a heavier bullet, which tends to be longer.

M855 is not for use at a range... it's specifically for use against UN vehicles when they come to impose martial law.

What length is your barrel.
Length changes the net velocity which also plays into bullet stability.
If you have a 14.5" or 16", you should be able to get away with 69gr SMK's.
If you have a 20" barrel, 75gr TAP or AMAX will also work.
Carbine's with a 1:9 twist won't quite handle Mk262 (77gr), but some 20" 1:9 barrels will.

In the end, the QUALITY of the bullet is far more important than the length/weight.

I bet you that 52gr matchkings will shoot better than 62gr M855 in your 1:9 barrel, no matter the length.
