If anyone was entitled to a free one, it should be military vets, starting with combat vets. And since that isn't going to happen, any other such claims of deserving a freebie ring pretty hollow.

I agree with this 100% and if not free or discount they should be 1st in the queue to get 1 if supplies are limited. I am sure their are CGNers that neglected to serve that have some reasoning why this should not be.

I think CMP gets a bit greedy because the people making decent salaries there know the gravy train will eventually end. The free guns they sell will eventually dry up and I'm sure their will be layoffs or reductions in salary when that happens.

Then, others that are obviously CMP fanboys, who believe any offering, in any condition, at any price, is Mana from Heaven, and we should thank the gods for blessing us with the opportunity to buy these pistols.

IMHO a rack grade mix master, very possibly with quite a few aftermarket parts, (Orest had mentioned a while back, that quite a few of the 1911s were frame only) is worth $600 or $700 to me.

Will I regret not buying a CMP 1911, probably not. Would I regret paying too much for an "overpriced rattle trap", absolutely.

But if some think $1000 is a helluva deal more power to them, because that is what it is worth to them. Does that make them an idiot to me, no. But on the other hand, if someone thinks $1000 is to much for a rack grade, I don't think that makes them a "cheapskate".

I find it a little telling, only the CMP fan boys felt the need to insult others for their opinions.

Care to share how you determine "market value"?
I have not attempted to determine the Market Valve of of a Garand. What does the market value Garand has to do with this thread, except CMP sells those too.

I have stated what a worn rack grade mix master was worth to me. I also wrote if someone thought it's a good price more power to them.

I have purchased a Garand from CMP in the past, but I would not do so today at the current prices.

Market Value is what people are willing to pay.

As far as sales of the 1911s, because I know that's what you're getting at, they will likely sell quite well at $1000. But not to me, or several others in this thread.

I agree they should take some 1911s and give them to the Veteran Marksmanship Program.

Default LATEST CMP UPDATE

Quote:
11/22/17 - Latest update on the 1911’s…..

Because of the limited number and the exceedingly high demand for the pistol, and the great level of Congressional scrutiny, the Board of Directors will make a decision regarding how sales will be handled. We have no further information at this time. – Mrs. Judith Legerski, Chairman, CMP Board of Directors

The latest I have heard about the 1911s.

The Bill said "may issue". The acting Sec of the Army is not going to transfer on a "may issue". It is being amended to say will/shall. CPM may get the guns in 2018 but its at least a year away.

Senator McCain wants the proceeds to go into the Treasury not back to the CMP.

CMP has a separate entity set up to receive, grade, check and sell the 1911s.

1911s will have to go to an 01 FFL, one per person.

The CMP does not know what the condition of the guns are in; they just have serial #s.

Expect rattle trap mix master guns. Anything good or collectable will got the the auction site.

Expect them to start at 1K. But they have no idea what is coming so everything else is conjecture.

Korean M1s are not happening in this lifetime.

Good point.

Everyone wanted a Taurus Judge... then a few 07's figured out that they could be had here by bringing in as an AOW, then the owner removes the VFG... haven't heard many on here Jonesing for a Judge in at least 3 years.

I take exception to your "neglected to serve" statement.

Yes there were some that played that game, then there were others that weren't ALLOWED to serve even though they volunteered but were deemed medically unqualified. I volunteered for the Coast Guard 1968, in 1969 while waiting my call up for Boot Camp I got the Draft Physical notice, which due to a shoulder that dislocated a lot disqualified me for the Draft and therefore the Coast Guard. I STILL carry my Draft card in my wallet as directed by the local Draft board and the card actually DID qualify me for a job just some 12 years ago as a "second form of identification" although the person said " I've really never seen one of these!"
I have nothing but respect and admiration for those that "Served" both of my brothers did. Many of my patients when I was still working clinically were veterans (high numbers in the Carson City NV area)
I once worked with an ex Gunnery Sgt/Drill Instructor that had seen several tours in Nam and I told him how I felt not being able to "serve", he talked just like R. Lee Ermey (make the hair on the back of you neck stand up!) he told me, Bob don't worry about it you didn't miss anything so don't feel guilty."
Well I still do, and am grateful for all those that were able to "Serve".
I know at least 3 people whose names are on the "Wall".

I'm just trying to figure out what you mean by "over priced." Does that mean that it's higher than what a similar item can be purchased for elsewhere? Or does it just mean it's more than YOU are willing to pay?

Doesn't apply to you. Would apply to draft dodgers or mall ninjas that don't join because they "might get hurt". Yes someone actually told me this before.

They are all over 50 years old. CMP will just add more of their Byzantine rules and regulations. So may not ship to a C&R FFL where legal. Wouldn't matter in CA.

Byzantine rules and regulations? They go out of their way to follow their charter and deal with state governments in order to ship surplus rifles directly to peoples homes without using a FFL wherever possible. I love it when people are too lazy to spend an hour or so to comply with CMP's regulations. Just leaves more deals for the rest of us.

California law.
Even a C&R handgun has to come in through an 01FFL. This has been the case for many years.

C&R long guns also fall under the new laws, but many chose to ignore it and many vendors still ship C&R long guns to our doors.

More than I am willing to pay.
When the price was originally announced a while back, I did some searching and found that for a $100 to $400 more one could get a decent example of a government surplus 1911 with original parts or at least all military parts. They can still be found but, there are much fewer. Who knows maybe the announcement from CMP has caused the prices to rise.

Colts are off roster, so unless CMP presents them as C&R we aren't getting any.

They don't have to "present" them as C&R. They simply need to be over 50 years old.

Well, California law does not apply to me, so most likely it can be delivered to my door like the M1 was.

The rifles that are sold by CMP were delivered to our door because of special dispensation by Congress. However the 1911 distribution required the CMP to get an FFL to ship them so the rules may be different. Previously the CMP did not have an FFL.

Big auctions at both little johns December 17-19 and carol watsons in February will be jammed with garands, 1911's, and M1 carbines. From the pre bid action on 1911s I gotta say $1,000.00 would be a great deal.

You can bid at www.proxybid.com

Little johns is up. Watsons will be posted shortly.

That is just not going to be an issue with these. The last government order 1911-A1's to be purchased was in 1945. So they are going to be at least 72-73 years old depending on when they are released.

This is not including the very small amount (4000) of Colt pistols that were purchased by the Marine Corps in 2012. Designated the M45A1 they were used until a couple of years ago and then bought back from the government by Colt and resold with a certificate of authenticity on the civilian market. They are marked "USMC" (which has been crossed out) on the left side of the slide.

These USMC marked pistols commonly sell on the secondary market for $3000 and up. You can buy the exact same gun only marked "M45A1" on the slide for about half of that.

None of which will do you any good in Commiefornia since they are too recent to be C&R and are not on the roster.

Where did we get the $1000 number? Did CMP come out and say this?

Yes they did!

The pricing is expected to start at about $1,000 per pistol (Rack Grade) with the better grades “priced accordingly.” Expected to have same grades as Garand's with the "good stuff" going to the CMP auction.

Dang, $1000 for only a rack grade? A bit rough, but I have been wanting a surplus 1911 for just about my whole life now. Still on the fence.

I'd just save up a bit more and buy one elsewhere. Good chance you won't even get one. Also you may not like what you end up with taking whatever random beater they send you for $1000+.
