Default Best First Handgun For Under $550

I have made one of these before but my friend has added some new guns to the list and asked me to make this poll, he also reduced the price.

Edit: home defense, occasional range use, first time handgun owner.

Oh also 9mm

You would have to put what you’d use it for. Target practice, home defense etc. it would narrow it down

Are you wanting your first handgun or are you wanting your first handgun that costs less than $550?

They’re just a tad over $550 new but go for a Beretta 92FS. Great handgun to learn on, assuming that is what you’re doing.

Rifle gear has XD-9's for sale right now for $489. That's a good start. Within your budget and in stock.

Gotta say Glock 17

Of your list though, the Beretta Storm is a damn good pistol. I’m just so-so on the XD’s and the SIG didn’t impress me as much as the Beretta.

Default Best First Handgun For Under $550

Glock 19

If the world ended today and you ask me to pick one gun, it would be the Glock 19. I have a good amount of nice toys too. 1911s, STIs, CZs and whatnot.

It’s reliable and require little maintenance. Parts are easily accessible and readily available and there’s a large aftermarket too. It’s lightweight and capacity is more than adequate. Everyone and their mama have some version of Glock.

I shoot a variety of handguns: revolvers, 1911s, DA/SA, SAO, striker fire, polymer, steel, etc. I’m most proficient with the Glock platform. Give me a Glock 19 and I’ll shoot center mass all day. Never officially timed myself but I can do it fairly quick.

Expect to spend more than $550 due to covid. I don’t know if the Glock 19 is on your poll due to mobile app but had to give my 2¢.

You could get a Glock 17 for under 550. If you go up to 600, you can get a used Beretta 92FS, which is easier to shoot than a Glock.

At a minimum, go handle all of those pistols and see what fits your hand the best. Better yet shoot them and see what is most comfortable. I shot with a Taurus PT92 (Off roster now) for 20+ years and absolutely loved that gun so my vote would be for a Beretta 92. Lots of votes for Glocks but the trigger and grips are night and day different than the Beretta.

Do you have a range close by that rents guns? I almost bought a Glock 34 but I just couldn’t get comfortable with it. I ended up with a Tanfo instead.

I Highly recommend the G19..but I HAVE TO INSIST on the Sig Arms SP2022.. I mean c’mon.. I’ve got a std. 1913 Picatinny rail, SA/DA, decocker, a lightweight
Polymer frame with a semi-compact feel...great for IWB EDC.

I think the SP2022’s trigger is just awful. My friend had one. Bought it as his first gun. He couldn’t get rid of it fast enough. It’s a little snappy and the grip is uncomfortable.

Smith & Wesson 34 4".

Learn how to shoot a handgun....develop the correct technique and then move up.

I still love to take out the 22s and practice trying to hit the 6" swingers at 100yds. It forces me to correct my deficiencies.....

From your list, the XD9. IMHO, fits the hand well, good trigger for a striker fire, as accurate as you need in this type of pistol, plus mine (a xd40) has been 100% reliable. Mags can be pricey, aftermarket is ok, but upgrades seem to cost more than ones for Glocks. BTW the accessory rail can take lights etc meant for Glocks

Haven't handled the sig, but they have a good rep.

Brother-in-law has a Beretta PX4. Wasn't very impressed by it for some reason. It shot without issues, but both of us had problems getting good groups. Plus there seems to be very little after market support, and the mags are relatively expensive. IMHO, get a Beretta 92FS or M9 instead.

Another option is to see if you can qualify to get a blue label Glock 17 or 19. https://us.glock.com/en/buy/blue-label-program

One thing to look out for is the DA/SA trigger on the sig, 92fs, and px4. The two types of pulls, 1st long DA pull, then short, crisp SA ones, takes some getting use to.

Like others have said, find a range that rents them, and see what you like the best.

Good hunting

At this time, quality and good price may be hard to find--all the best!

From that list the XD, but a Glock 19/17 would probably be a better "Best Gun" in that price range.....if you can find them in that price range, which you cannot right now. Truth be told the Sig isnt for everyone, the Beretta PX4 has a gimmick, and the XD is honestly a $300 gun from Crotia that Springfield slapped their name on and jacked the price up. The XDM's are worth it though.

Also strongly considering the XD9, 2022 or G17/19 for my first non-revolver purchase.

To be redundant. Glock G17 or 19.

But don't expect to easily get one today for that price, especially in CA. A slingshot, maybe. A newbie member very recently scored a G19 for $250 over retail in a gun shop.

It's strange, with all of these "peaceful protests" and defunding police, people all of a sudden realize that black guns matter

Of the selection offered.. Springfield XD9. I don't own one but they are solid, robust, reliable striker fired pistols that I would not have a problem betting my life on.

I hesitate to ever suggest a hammer fired DA/SA? pistol to anyone as a first gun as few people ever train to master the DA/SA trigger pull.

If you can get a used Glock, do it. Same with the XD9. If that's not possible, a Smith & Wesson SD9VE is a very good choice. I should know I own all three of them.

Would only recommend the SD9VE if that is absolutely positively all you can afford.

in normal times outside of election and kung flu

Any glock other than 34/35 will fit that price
g17/G22 RTF2
g19/G23
g30sf/g21

Any shield no matter color or sights (not great "only" gun)

CZ P01, PCR, Compact

xd 4inch or tactical 5" bitone or all black

Sig2022 are normally $430 pending night sight option (mags are most expensive of the bunch)

good luck and happy hunting!!!
