Default Surf fisherman, another noob question. Beaches.

Surf fisherman,

What beaches do you fish from Leo Carrillo north, into Ventura County? Thanks, A2

All of them you are allowed to. Work your way up the coast. I look at google maps for any type of reasonable coastal access and try it out. When all the beaches were closed I knew a few spots I could go to without being hassled. Try and get away from popular spots.

Check the news for riptide warnings. I’ve always done ok with riptides.

Obviously, it’s way more dangerous so don’t wade in.

Cast along the edges.

Most shark attacks happen in waist-deep water.

My biggest successes surf fishing have been during grunion runs. They are bait fish and bring in larger fish.

Almost any beach contains fish. Timing, scanning for feeding fish, holes created by the current, and structure are key elements to looks for. The 2 hours before and after a high or low tide have always produced more and better grade/species of fish for me.

I like going at low tide to see where the troughs and rips are.

Come back about 2 hours before high tide and you should have about 4 hours of good fishing. Fish the troughs near where the water is flowing back out.

Use Gulp! Saltwater Sandworms in camo or dig for sand crabs (you’ll get bigger fish with the live bait)
