Default Firing 44 magnum out of 460 S&W

So S&W says you can use .460 S&W magnum, 454 casull, and 45 colt in their 460. It says nothing about 44 magnum, or .410 shot shells..... before i get one i just wanna make sure i can use both of these other cartridges. Any S&W gurus out there?

.44mag won't work properly. Although it might actually chamber and fire, the bullet is too small for the barrel and it is a dangerous thing to do. Since you are in CA, if you own a handgun that is capable of chambering and firing a .410 shell, you are committing a felony. It is considered a SBS under CA law. So, you DO NOT want a handgun capable of firing a .410 here.

BTW, I don't know why you are looking for the opinion of a S&W guru. What I posted above is just common sense and has nothing to do with either the make nor model of the gun you are looking at.

Absoultely not. And don't attempt to fire a 41 Magnum out of a 44 Magnum, or a 357 Magnum out of a 41.

I wouldn't try to shoot a smaller calliber out of ANY gun. Just remember: .44 is smaller than .45........at least it was the last time I checked

So how is it that the taurus raging bull fires both 454 casull and 44 magnum? If both guns are chambered for 454 casull, doesnt it stand to reason that if one can shoot 44 magnum the other can as well?

You are mistken. Taurus offers DIFFERENT chamberings for their Raging Bull. .44mag and .454 Casull can not be interchanged. You would need to buy two different Raging Bulls if you wanted to shoot both.

.44 Mag actual bullet diameter is .430".
.45 LC, .454 Casull, etc are .451-.453

.44mag typically uses a .429 diameter bullet. The .460 S&W uses .45 diameter bullets.

You would not like the results from attempting to fire .44mag out of a .460 S&W

How about the .410? Would it damage the gun if you shot that out of it?

Cylinder length? It would take a veryyyyy long cylinder to even chamber the round. S&W makes a revolver in .410. But, as stated above, if you live in CA you will be advised not to bring one into the state. Felony... Why the urge to shoot a .410 in a revolver not even made for it? Death wish, like jail time, need a record? Just curious.

More like curiosity. Besides, what happens if I am in a survival situation and I NEED to shoot .410 out of my .460?

Does anyone know if this will work or not?

He wouldn't like the results, but we'd like the YouTube video

If you are in a survival situation, the .410 isn't going to do you any good fired from anything.

First. No. It won't work.

Second. If you're in a survival situation and you have a .460 S&W, you don't "NEED" to fire .410. Period.

O rly? Well I would LOVE to see you hunt a bird with a .460...and then make a meal with the meat afterwards...

If you're talking about shooting birds out of the sky with a .410, then I'm going to snicker a bit...

Otherwise, why NOT shoot them with the .45colt/.454/.460?

And if you're that paranoid, get a shotgun.

that gun's enough of a tackdriver that you can aim for headshots on most north american birds on the ground. Since it's a survival situation, you also don't have to worry about restrictions like taking a bird on ground either.

Then there's the fact that a bird isn't exactly the most meat-rewarding animal you can hunt with a 460.

Lol, what about if you have a zombie bearing down on you and you just fired your last 45 colt. You only have a handful of useless .410 shotshells, do you use the gun as a club or chance messing your gun up?

That's a good reason NOT to buy a .460 for a survial gun. Unless, you are talking about a bear gun for Alaska, I would not even think of such a large handgun as a survial gun. Then again, if you have your heart set on an all around handgun for taking everything from deer to birds, get a LeMatte.

I happen to love .410s and have 5 or 6 of them but, I don't see them as being the most practical survial round. I'd prefer a 28g. BTW, I do have a M6 survival rifle and it would definately not be close to my first choice if I had to pick just one gun to survive with.

It doesn't. The .454 Casull version fires .454 Casull and .45 Colt, not .44 Magnum. Likewise, the .44 Magnum version fires .44 Magnum and .44 Special, not .454 Casull. The S&W 460 XVR, which is .451" caliber like the .454 Casull and modern .45 Colt, fires all three of these...BUT NOT 44 MAGNUM.

"Could" you convert a .454 Casull revolver to .44 Magnum? Yes, with a cylinder and barrel swap. But if you already have a .454 Casull or .460 S&W Mag wheelgun, Redhawks are only $450 even on Gunbroker! Why not just buy a Redhawk in .44 Mag and be done with it?

Unless you have handloaded specially made .410 rounds, they won't chamber in a .45LC. The chamber isn't long enough. Even if you manage to get a round to chamber, if you tried to fire it, you would run the risk of blowing up your gun, hands and face. The chamber just isn't long enough to allow the crimp to open and the shot cup to get past it. So, using your gun as a club would be the smarter thing to do.

Yeah, agreed.

I *LOOOVE* big-frame revolvers (and own a .44mag Super Redhawk and .357mag 6" GP100), but they're probably one of the last guns I would choose for "survival". The weight:capacity ratio is way too out of proportion (woooo, 6 rounds) for something that you're going to be carrying all day every day.

I wouldn't look forward to carrying my Super Redhawk around all day, let alone a .460 that weighs probably twice as much.

I would go so far as to say that the .460S&W is probably one of the worst choices imaginable in a modern firearm for "survival" purpose. I'd take a 10/22 before I took a revolver that size.
