I use this program... works great for me!

http://www.iskysoft.com/imedia-converter-windows.html

two years ago around christmas time, they gave it out free as a publicity stunt and I managed to grab a copy then!

That being said, try handbrake. It is mac and windows and has to be the best/most featured free converter I have seen. I used to use it to back up my legally owned DVD's to my ipod, etc. It worked great for me.

+1 on Handbrake but...

You may end up needing a DVD ripper. What's the best freeware right now?

The wording on that is weird. Handbrake will handle DVDs directly, and it will handle Blu-Ray format only if it's unencrypted. So you don't need a DVD ripper but you will most likely want a Blu-Ray one. MakeMKV is good.

Alas, DVD Decrypter is now defunct. It was pretty good though. It can still do old dvds but definitely not the newly released ones.

Anybody here tried Videora yet?

Converting movie to iPad format is ok to use it on iPad. iPad format require bigger resolution means it will use a big amount of storage. Using this converted iPad format in iPhone/iPod is a big waste of storage. It is better to have a converted movie in iPad and iPhone format separately. So that you will not waste storage on your smaller idevice. But when you use the iPhone format on the iPad, the movie quality is pixelated.

I really like Handbrake too. Works perfectly fine.

To decrypt DVDs to your HD, I still use DVD Decrypter.

Some DVDs have copy protection and Handbrake can't rip them. Thor was one.

fyi, if you sign up for a box.com account which includes 5 gb free space. you can stream mp4 videos through the ipad- only catch is that you need to split the movie into a maximum of 100 mb per segment. the streaming is free on the apple app. for android there is a fee.
