Suggestions? My first Bolt Action Rifle
Hey haven't been on here in a awhile, but thought this be a good place to get some good Opinions on a Bolt Action rifle. Whether the opinions be on the quality of Rifle, Caliber, or Ammunition. Now I did lie a little, I do own an 1894 Spanish Mauser , but I ve probably have put 20 rds through that in last 5 years.
I am looking for a Long distance target rifle, I do not or imagine me hunting too often. I just love making those groups from 100-250 yards with my 22 and stock AK Id like to surpass and go way further. I would like an attached bipod or at very least somewhere I can attach one. I do love good Iron sights, I find it fun taking Irons sights to max and seeing what I can accomplish (I would use scope too), and last but not least my price range is around $700.00. Give you guys little Background. I am 25yrs old, been around guns whole life and shot many too. However up until 3 years, haven't actually owned more then a 22. and a shotgun. Since then I ve built 2 AKs and helped many of my friends on their various weapons. I just really really want a long range bolt action rifle, but i feel i dont understand enough. Such as best long distance calibers, what works best in wind, rifles that kick too hard, ect. Thanks beforehand Last edited by Andrew9686; 02-20-2014 at 5:41 PM.. |

There's a few threads on this subject that are only weeks old. I suggest you do a little reading through those for some good info.
But on the short, your budget, is that just for the gun or total? |

How bout some kind of 223 bolt as mentioned. It will be half the cost of 308 to shoot , have low recoil and will make holes in paper real good. With bonded 62 grain bullets it will serve as an emergency hunting rifle.

I vote Remington 700 in .308. Good all around round, used by police snipers, can be used as a hunting round for all North American game if needed, plenty of reasons why. If 700 is for a total budget, you can get a remington ADL from Cabela's shipped to your FFL with DROS fee and taxes for ~$500. Take the extra $200 and put it towards irons or saving towards a good scope or for little trinkets you may want

Just so we're clear, you said long range but then said 150-200 yards. I'm assuming that it's the latter? I ask because generally long range is 600+yds.
Like NorCalFocus said, is that $700 for everything or just for the gun?

I've seen some Howa rifles fitted with Hogue furniture and Sterling scopes going for about this price. They seem like really great rifles for the money. A friend of mine bought his wife one in .204 Ruger for Christmas and says it is great. I've seen them on the shelves in .308 and .223 most commonly.
Personally I really dig Japanese made products as a photography geek. |

I have seen the .223 Bolt action rifles and they are right in my budget. However friends tell me .223 can be heavily effected by wind. Their probably full of ****, but yeah I was looking into either .223 or .308 Howa

"Vliberatore" 100-200 is just what i can get good groups on currently, and thats with an AK w/stock sights. I know that isnt what some may call long range, but thats why I want a bolt action Rifle.

150-200 yard "longerange"? Well, if that's the case, get a quality .22lr, decent glass and use high quality sub sonic ammo. "Tiny groups" is a relative thing. A quality .22lr and the right quality ammo are more than capable of sub moa groups at 100 yards and probably 200 yards if you do your part. Yes, all bullets can be "heavily affected" by wind and even zero wind with boils going straight up. Reading the conditions is a large part of long range shooting with any projectile.

223 is effected more by wind, but at 100 to 250 yards you'll be fine.

I appreciate the responses. When I say 100-250 yards (Just to clarify) I am saying thats what I do now with my Walther G22 and my Bone Stock AK 47. The reason I want a nice Bolt Action Rifle is so I can surpass that. I was just going to upgrade my AK sights too the Tech sights, but even then I ve always want a nice bolt action anyways.

HAHA! I did think about the Mosin Nagant, maybe with a synthetic stock and scope. Honestly though I think I am leaning toward Howa 308, I heard its a nice caliber up too about 600 yrds. Plus I dont have to deal with the heavy long Mosin, not that there is anything wrong with that gun or caliber.

Go the local gun shop and buy a decent looking used Remington BDL . Then work up a load for it. 22-250 or 308 will do the shooting . I have tried the 243 and could never get it to group like the other two calibers.

I have a Marlin xl7 bolt action in 25-06 that is very accurate, and very inexpensive.

Short Range is 200yds and closer. Medium range is 200yds to 600yds. Long range is beyond 600yds. Extended long range is typically 1200yds and beyond. Using these terms will help you be better understood by people who use the normal terms to describe what they want to do.
