Default What's the most inherently/mechanically accurate 45acp semi-auto pistol under $1K?

Just curious what your thoughts are. Again, this is for the 45ACP caliber. I have a Kimber Stainless II that's modded up, and sometimes, I shoot well with it, but sometimes, like last Saturday with Winchester 45acp white box ammo, my groups were horrible even at 10 yards...4-5" groups at only 10 yards. ;( Could be ammo related or shooter's lack of practice.

Anyway, just considering what else is out there. I was looking at the CZ 97B as those get very good reviews besides the huge grip, but the price is not bad. I have medium sized hands. The P220 looks nice too, but too bad the Match models aren't CA approved.

Any pistol you shoot well; 99.9% of all handguns out there will be more potentially accurate than the person that shoots them. Handguns are poor representations of accuracy at best.
It really comes down to what fits your hand and what you shoot well.

Correctamundo.

And some guns are more accurate than the typical bulk ammo fed to them, so it's not fair unless you're rating 'em with (1) match ammo (2) that the gun actually likes.

Also, the most acccurate 45ACP I've used is the S&W 625 revolver

There are a number of 1911 platform guns that are very accurate out of the box - S & W, Dan Wesson, Kimber and plenty of others. I don't think you can quantify any one semi as being "most accurate".

I have a CZ 97 as my house gun and although the SA trigger pull is spongy & has some creep, it's very accurate & has a very good reputation. I have big hands & that DA trigger pull is a stretch, but the remaining shots are fired SA and not so bad.

BTW, the most accurate 45 ACP is a Smith, but it's a Smith 25.

My Les Baer TR and (more than one of) my 70 Series National Match Gold Cups are nearly identical in accuracy. And call it fate or luck, but I have a S&W Scandium 1911PD that I can shoot nearly as well, and is as accurate as either of the former ( which I'd like to point out is about 1/3rd the cost).

HK USP45
S&W1911
Sig P220
CZ97b

I would probably go in that order. You mentioned the CZ97b. It is a very accurate gun, but does have a large grip, hard to reach slide release and is heavy. Additionally it has a loaded chamber indicator that can become detached and make the gun in-operable.

HK USP45 or SIG P220. Both are very accurate, and you don't have to put $1500 into a 1911 to do it.

A decent $500 Milspec 1911 with a match barrel and bushing fitted correct can probably shoot a 1 inch group with the right ammo. That would be an inherently accurate .45 under 1k. But in real life, the same $500 Milspec 1911 with a good trigger job, good ammo, will probably be more accurate in my hands. The best I can do at 10 yrds with good lighting and good sights is 1 inch (the best I can not, not that I can do it consistently). The best I can do at 25 yrds is probably 3-4 inches. Pretty much any decent 45 out there has better inherent accuracy than me.

SIG 220 is the first gun I shot that had bullets going through the hole from the last bullet.

My buddy's 1911PD is the same way. Super crisp trigger, extremely accurate. The Range Officer where I go says their 1911PD rental has been there a long time, tons of rounds, no issues and it shoots straighter and smoother than their TRP (full rail). He forced me to shoot it and I'd agree. Amazing how well it's held up. It even fed some Federal HSTs I fed it for fun. Was crudded up beyond belief, too.

Well, I will add a G21 to the list, but if you have small hands that might not work well for you since the grip is fairly big.

Unless you get something flawed from the get go they're all better than 99% of the shooters.

The 220 has a reputation for being extreamly accurate.

Another really accurate gun is the Smith and Wesson 625 revolver.

Ruger P90 (flame away, I can hit a 2x4 at 100 yards with 7 out of 8 rounds)
CZ97 type series (EAA witness also)
H&K USP 45
Sig P220 is OK but out of a ransom rest I still get bettter resluts with my P90. Also the sig finish is less than stellar with real world use. By real world use I don't mean being babbied in a gun safe. I mean real world where your partner spills soda on your gun while driving in the car and you can't clean it off real good untill the end of shift kinda world.

Under a $1000 i'd go with

Kimber Custom II Target model
SW 625
SW 1911
SA 1911 trophy match

i haven't had the pleasure of the CZ97 but if it shoots like my CZ SP01 then im sure the CZ97 is right up there.

As for the HK USP and Sig 220 and Glock 21...i tried them all and they dont have the triggers, barrel lockup, and grip angle for the best accuracy possible.

I forgot to say the same thing - this is the most accurate handgun (when I'm doing my part) I own.

You know, something just occurred to me - we're saying over and over again, "What is the most accurate handgun?" Like the gun itself is accurate. It just gets up and shoots and is either accurate or not.
Shouldn't we be saying "What is the most accurate handgun, in the hands of a skilled, experienced and accurate shooter?"
I simply bring it up since it's so very similar to what the anti-gun crowd always says: "These guns are dangerous! Assault weapons kill people!"
Baloney. And we know it. The gun itself does nothing by itself.
The gun is just a tool and in the hands of a skilled tool user, well then you can do great or terrible things. But by itself, it does nothing. Sure a well made tool will give you better results than a poorly or cheaply made one, but it still comes back to the skill of the user.

Maybe I'm way off in left field here, but when someone does the semi-obligatory "What's the most accurate handgun in X caliber?" shouldn't the first response be "Well how accurate are you? What's your skill level?"

If it becomes detached - a really big if but I suppose as things go, it would be at the most inopportune time - and drops into the action I agree. If it simply works loose or falls off the gun will still function normally. I've fiddled with mine a bit and found it takes alot of torque to remove the screw holding it in AND the block that carries the LCI nub is fitted very, very tight.

If my shooting buddy spilled coke in my Sig he'd be finished before the Sig lost its finish. I love my Sigs.

I like ST versions better, though.

I have to agree, but not completely, about the Ruger. They're surprising for their price.

There have been no valuable responses thus far in this thread (my own included). "Inherent accuracy" is measured on a Ransom rest, with the same load, at the same time, at the same distance, under the same conditions. Everybody has their own totally unfounded opinion on what is most accurate, based on what they like, or what they shoot the best. Either method of answering has zero relevance.

But, there is another side to that coin. If someone must base their pistol choice on Ransom rest tests, because they can outshoot the other guns offhand, that would be truly amazing. I am confident that this is not the case. Any quality semiauto is going to outperform the shooter. The day you can pick up gun offhand and match the Ransom Rest at 25 yards, and do it consistently, is the day you need a more accurate gun. Until then, there are other, more pertinent factors to consider, such as features, trigger system, sights, how comfortable the gun is in your hand, etc.

Speak up for the Ruger P90!

Generally, the Ruger P90 is one of the more accurate 45 autoloaders out there. There's some bias against it, because it's a 'cheap' gun, and the trigger can be a bit gritty.

But P90s are absolutely unstoppable. I should get one for the helluvit.
