You are right shellac in of itself won't raise grain. I should have referred to only the first coat, where I was recommending a thinly cut first layer of shellac to precondition the wood. Almost like a spit coat. Essentially he would be wiping with alcohol/water since it would be thinly diluted shellac.

OP if you haven't stained already, to answer your question from awhile ago, no you can't mix stain into the shellac. They won't mix. However you can get amber flakes, or purchase transtint from Rocklers or Woodcraft and tint your shellac. Removing the tinted shellac will be much easier than removing stain from wood.

It would be best of course to practice on scrap birch.
Thanks!!!
I'll practice on scrap birch. I'm not going to have any action on my stock until I'm sure of the color.
After learning a lot of experience, I am very cautious now.

1. pre stain + minwax red mahogany 225 (one time), too dark!
2. only Zinsser Amber Shellac (4 times)
3. pre stain + minwax sedona red 222 (2 times) + Zinsser Amber Shellac (3 times)
4. pre stain + minwax sedona red 222 (one time) + Zinsser Amber Shellac (2 times)

no sanding, just for color

Neither one of those is good in my opinion. Where is the Gunstock 231 stain?
