Make bot spotting and killing fun again! How about a t shirt or mug for the most bots reported each month?

Seriously. I am now having trouble figuring out if it is one of the usual idiots from OT or is it a spammer.

20 of the first 25 in General Gun.
At this rate, does the iTrader rate really matter??

Spammers for sure - I just removed 30 users and 90 threads.
See what I get for cooking dinner?

C'mon, it's not that hard to recognize a spammer.
If the title doesn't make it plain, the screen name usually does. Yes, they are annoying, but it's part of the webz. It would be nice to be rid of them, but that's probably not gonna happen. Recognize them, report them and move on.

Beyond annoying
I too wish something could be done to rid us of the SPAM. Aren't you moderators tired of it too?
There are vendor partners at the top of the page/advertisers that could help (insert $$$ here)? No other forum i'm on has the magnitude of this problem CA GUNz has. Why has this not been addressed? Making the forum not the forum it used to be. Deal with it or don't visit? Enjoyment very diminished sorting thru the BS as we are all sick of looking at it; of that i'm sure. Each week there is more of it to sort thru. Too bad for us. |

As I understand it part of the upgrading problem would be the loss of the iTrader rating system. You willing to lose your 20?

What are the spammers getting out of what they are doing? If I click on a post that turns out to be spam, I leave. Are they really making money that way?

You don't necessarily lose it, not if you've got a good guy to handle the upgrade. The pain is every single hack/mod done to the site has to be re-installed, and of course you have to do it in a way that doesn't lose the info.

Not just redone, but re written to work with the new software, which takes lots of time, $$$ and isn't always possible.

VBulletin options/user registration options/ moderate new members/ yes Takes less than a minute and will stop every single spammer immediately. They aren't able to post anywhere until they are manually okayed. Plus most of them have ridiculous usernames, so they're very easy to pick out. Someone does need to look at the new registrations to let real members in, so there may be a delay for them to post, but the result is worth it IMO. |

i was just thinking
yah i know, bad idea anyway, can you count how many attempts at creating a username there are. my thought is ANY username that is successful on first try, has got to be spammer, seriously, how many of us upon account creation had to try at least 3 times to get something that was not used? so, if its good first attempt, its gotta be computer generated/automated |

Within less than 30 days the spammers will give up and start going away. Deleting posts and spammers after the fact is futile and allows them to win so that's why they stay and it gets worse. |

Wouldn't it also be faster to have a mod run a batch of potentials, than be reactionary and chase the spam (asked out of 99% ignorance on the actual process).

One of the things that I used in the past was the to block IPs from countries known to spam. This eliminated them from getting to the website to begin with. |

I'm uncertain as to are there enough moderators to actually service the site in normal times, let alone the spam world that's here now.

Can you keep new members from posting links for 30 days and 30 posts? I know the Lexus forum I am on has some limited account thing for the first 30 days and certain amount of posts. Don't know how much of it is automatic vs manual. We are a MUCH MUCH smaller forum though.

I have an ideal, well... To actually to cut down on spam.
1) is there a way to set up the board so that if a post gets flagged so many times (let's say 5x) that the post is automatically hidden and the user set into a cue that prevents them from posting till cleared by a mod? This works two fold, those annoyed with span can hunt them down and soft ban them without the help of mods and preserves actual ban by mods whole putting said accounts on timeout and denying them the clicks their sites so desire for higher results when search for stuff on the internet. 2) the other thing would be to disallow hyperlinking to stuff for the first 15-20 posts? This combined with the first idea may stop them cold. Since they want to post links and and can't do so till so many posts, they've got to stay on topic (since OT doesn't count your posts) and contribute or be called out and put on soft ban. Just ideas. 😁 Dan |

As a moderator for another site with high traffic I can commiserate with these Mods. They do a fantastic job.
That being said we can't expect them to be in all places at one time. My wife can tell you how many times I have pulled away from something to pull out my phone so I could delete a post or a thread. It's not as easy keeping up as people would think, especially on a site this large with this many subforums. Making changes to the site is not as easy as one would think to. There is always the after effect. You changed x and now y doesn't work, but y isn't related to x and you don't know why y won't work anymore etc etc. Also your working within the constrains of Vbull. The site I am on, uses a simple question that people could google the answer to. It's not full proof, and also has not had the level of spam attack that this site has had. but once again These Mod's do a Great job!! |
