Default Places to shoot my 80% AR

Hello everybody, I am a Newbie to Calguns and a Newbie to shooting 80% guns, I was wondering if anybody knows a good spot where I can shoot my 80% AR Without being harassed about it not being registered, serial numbers, etc..? I have my 9mm and I used to shoot at Magnum years ago, I believe you have to be a member to shoot AR's their but mine is an 80%, I just don't want to go shooting or trying to get in to a range and the next thing you know the range calls the freakin SWAT TEAM and I have to go through the whole IT'S Legal to have and all that BS. I say this because I have a buddy from Riverside PD, great guy BUT, he says its illegal and no matter what it says on the internet, its not legal to posses a firearm without a serial number or registration, and If I get caught with it I will go to jail! So, since I've built it I have never shot it and I'm dying to see and hear it shoot! Any Ideas? I know my buddy is wrong, I just don't understand why Police Officers don't get informed about these things.

Thanks!

While you're shooting your 100% legal AR, at ANY range that allows rifles, tell your law enforcement friend to get educated and stop spreading Bravo Sierra.

I was told the same thing by a friend of mine. He was basically saying that yes you are in the right, but some law enforcement guys dont know and since it seems "so scary" to have a firearm without serial #'s...they would arrest you first and do the research later. Meanwhile, you would be going to jail and spending money to defend yourself. This of course made me a little paranoid going to public ranges. I don't think so though. There has been so much media coverage and internet stuff on the subject, you would have to be living under a rock to not have heard about building your own firearm.

Right on guys, I just didn't want to go to a shooting range (Outdoor or Indoor) and while filling out whatever paperwork they have you fill out and start into the range while there sending that info to law enforcements and bang! this guy has an illegal gun at the range, lets go get his ***!! LMAO!! Or something like that! That's why I rather take my 9mm but I really want to shoot my 80% AR for the first time. I will be going to the Magnum meet and taking it so this should be fun!

David, I told him and believe me, These guys are Hard Headed!! Don't get me wrong, he wouldn't arrest me or do anything like that even if he was in the right, but they get pissed with just the though of guns being legal that they cannot control (Serial Numbers) and stuff like that, LOL!!

CB, That's exactly what I'm talking about, lol! I get paranoid going to ranges with my 80%, I have my 9mm but I'm tired of just shooting that, I could go buy an AR but that's not the point. I want to shoot the one I built and feel good that I can have a gun that is not controlled by Big Brother!

But still the LEO has to sight which law you are breaking to arrest you. He can't just say you are under arrest for carry that scary, non-serialized weapon. He has to sight the penal code in which you have violated.

Great Point! I'm going to ask him what penal code would it falls under so he can start asking around his department while other officers who build the same 80% ARs can slap him upside his head! LOL!!

Exactly. Keep in mind, most cops do not know the penal code all that well. There's a lot of it. That's why they (almost) always call home and ask to be sure.

Odds are your fine. Just get it engraved with normal looking standard info to help avoid potential drama.

This. I got my 80% AK receivers engraved at purchase for $20/ea. I just had them force-matched to the trunnions, added "Made In USA" and caliber info. It's not BATFE-legal but it should pass muster for milsurp. I can't imagine it'd be much more than that to have a serial # of your choosing engraved on an AR lower.

Best-case scenario: You spend fifteen minutes cuffed in the back of his cruiser while he calls up the food chain looking for a specific PC to cite you under. Eventually somebody tells him you're GTG and you're released with an heartfelt apology and free tickets to the Policeman's Ball.

Worst-case scenario: He hooks you up under PC 30600 (illegal assault weapon, a felony). You spend anywhere from 24 to 72 hours in jail before the wheels of justice grind to the point where an ADA even looks at your case; if you're unlucky, the ADA will be as uninformed (or stupid) as the arresting officer and they'll actually charge you. In the meantime, they've used that arrest as probable cause to issue a no-knock warrant for your home; kicked in your front door; shot your dog; terrorized your family; and cleaned out your safe and all your ammo. Oh, and have we talked about coughing up $50k in unencumbered property for bail, or spending $5k on a bail bond (nonrefundable?)

Seems a no-brainer to me. YMMV.

Do you actually know anyone that the worse case scenario? or are you basing that off the internet and 1 or 2 stories on this forum? And by that scenario I mean; honest guy goes to a public range, minds his own business and gets arrested? Not, guy drives a car with expired tags and a broken tail light, has warrants and has a 30 round loaded mag in his home built ar with collapsable stock and grenade launcher attached and no bullet button?

I have yet to meet someone that has had a problem...I know, I know, someone here is going to give me the "do you want to be the test case? go right ahead" speech...blah, blah, blah.....

I have never had any LEO inspect any of my firearms at any range. As long as the firearm is legal, take off your TFH and go enjoy it.

I do not. My "worst-case scenario" is just that; a presupposition of what *could* occur if everything, and I mean everything, all went horribly wrong.
That said, given the anti-EBR mindset of many jurisdictions in this state, especially in SoCal, it's really not too farfetched.

Thanks for all the Great Info Guys!! Oh, and that PC 30600 sounds like No Joke!

30600. (a) Any person who, within this state, manufactures or
causes to be manufactured, distributes, transports, or imports into
the state, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for sale, or who
gives or lends any assault weapon or any .50 BMG rifle, except as
provided by this chapter, is guilty of a felony, and upon conviction
shall be punished by imprisonment pursuant to subdivision (h) of
Section 1170 for four, six, or eight years.
(b) In addition and consecutive to the punishment imposed under
subdivision (a), any person who transfers, lends, sells, or gives any
assault weapon or any .50 BMG rifle to a minor in violation of
subdivision (a) shall receive an enhancement of imprisonment pursuant
to subdivision (h) of Section 1170 of one year.
(c) Except in the case of a first violation involving not more
than two firearms as provided in Sections 30605 and 30610, for
purposes of this article, if more than one assault weapon or .50 BMG
rifle is involved in any violation of this article, there shall be a
distinct and separate offense for each.

I believe I'll be just fine, LOL!! Thanks again for all the info, the more information on these Laws (Especially out here in Cali) the better, that way less mistakes are made on my end!

Wrong.

California has 29 different codes. An LEO can arrest you for a criminal violation contained in any of those 29 codes.

It's not just about the Penal Code.

I have never seen the RSO or any shooter look for S/Ns.

They are only interested in chamber flags.

(And shooting, and talking about guns and shooting.)

Rick, That's what my buddy said as well, he didn't say how many cods but he did say their are codes that can be used to arrest you if they wanted to legally (Something like that) but thanks again for the input!

Your buddy is a major fail. Pre 1968 guns were not required to have serial numbers. Handguns purchased pre 1994 (?) were not required to be registered. Long guns purchased prior to 2015 were not required to be registered. Give your buddy some web sites like ATF and DOJ so he can see what the real facts are that can be found on the internet.

Wow, That's very interesting! I never knew that, thanks a lot! I am definitely going to challenge him on those two! Funny thing is that he is the one who trains the officers shooting skills or something like that, basically he is in charge of the police shooting range, lol!

I have taken my 80% AR to 2 different ranges LAX and Burro Canyon with no issues, all they checked was the ammo-walk in there like you have been there before and shoot away...

If LE uses this pc, then they would also have to use the legal definition of "assault weapon"...which I would hope the 80% would not fall into.

With that mindset...a californian should also worry about the possession of off roster guns, non-compliant guns for fear of getting arrested for possession of an illegal firearm. Bogus? sure it's bogus, but if we are going to make up what a LEO can do to make trouble for you, there really is no end to it. You might as well sell all of your guns, because anything firearm related can get you in jail.

The reality is you have to play by the rules, and don't be an a-hole. Don't have 30 round mags and no bullet button on an ar with a collapsable stock. If you are going to tote around your legally owned 30 rounders, do it when you have your featureless ar. Properly transport the firearm, keeping it locked, and the ammo separate. Don't drive around with a broken tail light, and expired registration. Don't drink and drive. In other words...be a good citizen. I have had law enforcement come and look at my home build, and all they said was "cool"

Your first paragraph makes you sound just a trifle on the paranoid side. Your second paragraph sounds a lot better.

The law (all laws - not the Penal Code) are tools that are available for LEOs to address the various problems that impact society. We don't go around looking for situations to apply every law that exists. If you're someone who believes that every law in existence needs to be fully enforced, please give a close read to Penal Code section 4 to help set yourself straight.

go to Lytle Creek shooting range...I've seen many people with 80% AR rifles and pistols. Just make sure it is configured to be CA compliant.

I've never been questioned about my HK rifle that is a RAW.

Thanks!
I shoot my 80 their at magnum range in rancho with no problem and yes you need to be a member to be able to shoot your AR in their its only 79.99 gor a years membership hope this helps

Right on Choppas, I will check out Lytle Creek. I have heard many negative things about that range, mostly about one guy who takes his authority way too far a likes to scream at people, have you had any issues their?

Thanks.

Thanks Kaged! I actually want to the Calguns Shoot Meet on Saturday and took my 80%, it was great! I had a great time and everybody was way cool so I will definitely be going back. I was also checking out the range prices and I will be getting a membership with Magnum Range.

Thanks again buddy!

3%er if you don't mind an hour and a half drive blm land is just north west of Victorville I live in Covina and that's my choice no admittance fee no line breaks except for when you choose miles and miles of open legal to target shoot in public land for the most part blm officers or rangers whatever they are are very knowledgable on ca gun laws or anything else blm related as long as you're in compliance no problems they might even want to shoot and bs for a bit

like suggested above, its a 60-90 minute drive to BLM land from my house in Alta Loma. I've found that the east side of the 395 is better for shooting then the west side because the RVers tend to stay on the west side.

Just make sure you have a good back stop and clean up your mess. I have a spot that's 1.5 miles east of the 395 with a great back stop. I've spent a few days and nights out there and hardly ever see any people.
