Default Burro Canyon "Wet Season"

Anyone know how close we are to that 3" of rain mark? I really want to shoot there but only have magnetic ammo. Or when does it usually become the "wet season"? Thanks!

Norsemen308, I just checked out LCFL's website, and they state, "No steel core ammo."

Does that mean that they check your ammo with magnets to make sure it isn't magnetic? How recently did you go there to shoot?

In their defense. This year we have been getting a lot more wind than ever before around this time. The Santa Ana winds came late this year (Hence the hurricane speed winds we had last week). The San Gabriel Valley (Where Burro Is) is still on "high wind watch". A lot of wind and no rain = dangerous fire possibility, even if its cold.

Here is why, straight from today's fire weather forecast.

Quote:
The potential for large fire will remain elevated over Southern California today due to gusty offshore winds and low humidity. A “High Risk” day was not needed because winds are lighter and not as widespread today. However, any fire that gets started in a windy area will have rapid rates of spread and long range spotting potential.
No range wants to be responsible for a fire, and its not wet enough that things won't actively burn, and any wind event will cause problems even after its rained you can have a fire in several hours if you have Santa Ana's(granted you don't normally have a rain storm and then have Santa Ana's the next hour, but hypothetically).

Never been to either. I just noticed that Burro has a 500yard range for rifles and I'm hoping to practice for NRA High Power Competition. Are there any ranges in the San Diego area? I know there are those three north of me but I haven't ventured South of the Orange County Area.

+1, Last time I went some "gangsta" had literally all of his guns layed out (about 25 of them) and then strapped a 16 inch knife to his leg. When he walked up to the line to shoot it looks like he had two popsicle sticks tied to his legs. Hilarious!!! On the bright side his g/f was busting out of her tactical wife beater.

The thing to do at Burro, is to get a private range.

Private range at Burro= $80
Must reserve in advance, probably a couple of weeks WAIT!

The flip side to that coin:

A trip to hi Dez BLM = $45 in gas (round trip SUV)
You have $35 left for ammo ....

The experience; FREAKING PRICELESS!

Oh, & you must clean up ...

My two cents ...

man, I gotta go out there, beautiful pics man. I always go to lytle, no issues with ammo. Only thing I like about burros is that they don't restrict hand gun distance. 25 at lytle.

I've been to Burro quite a bit and never had an issue. Some of the people that you speak of may not even be "gangstas" or maybe my idea of gangster and yours differ.

Yes this is the better place to go. It is awesome. How long of a drive out of LA? I assume that you can camp out there since it is BLM right?

actually the cost is less unless you go at it solo at burro. usually you bring a group and the $80 is split among the first 4 people (including yourself) so really it is only $20. other benefits is that you stay close to any emergency services in case accidents happen, you don't need a off-road capable vehicle to reach burro, and also cost less in fuel/time.

About a couple of hrs drive from LA, sure you can camp & I recommend that you do. Pick a night of full/ partial moon & you can see quite well at night without even a flashlight. I even hiked with my dogs one time in the middle of the night, very invigorating ...

Good point, to each is his own ... I like the element of risk & danger, keeps your senses in optimal alertness ...

BTW/ if you have AT&T, its non stop continuous coverage.

Help is 20 minutes away via Ridgecrest Air Rescue (yeah, you'll be airlifted by a chopper lol ... if its a serious accident like a gun shot wound) ...

There's also a Fire/Rescue station in Randsburg about half an hour to 40 minutes away ...

Nothing wrong with Burro and the private ranges there. We've NEVER had an issue there, were left alone by the staff, and could pretty much do what we wanted....call our own line breaks, etc. Take a few friends, bring some EZ-UPs, tables, and chairs and make a day of it. Good times.

I've only been to Angeles and they've checked my ammo a few times. It's a little annoying, but rules are rules.

BLM is the way to go if you have the entire day starting from 5am to get out there and set up. 2 hour drive from LA out to Barstow. You have to pack your own stuff to shoot and have to spend time cleaning up. I've shot out at Hodge road earlier this year, but haven't been back there since I heard rumors from a friend that the place is off limits for shooting now. The place was a mess because no one ever picked up their brass or stuff after shooting.

I also go to BLM, but there are times we don't want to make that (1 1/2 hour for me) drive, and my truck uses $50.00 of gas when we go to BLM land, and that is of Hodge Road. So we reserve a private range at Burro, we plan trips months in advance and have at least 4 people go. When at least 4 people go, it is only $20.00 a person and a 35 minute drive. I wish BLM land was closer.

I go to Hodge rd. Off the 15 frwy. Just like 10 minutes past victorville. Its a legal area to fire off anything, I just pack a bunch of ammo and guns, a few friends all day having fun. Everyone there practices proper gun safety. (At least when I'm there) no one bothers you. I just wish people would clean up after them selves. Just take some targets and your good to go!

I wish people would clean up after them selves as well, all that trash there gives us shooters a bad name.

In contrary to the "what's the infatuation with Burro?". I go there at least six times a year in all seasons and have never ran into this "gangsta" crowd either that some talk about, but I usually go on a weekday morning. It's always fun and have never had any problems. Of course I've seen newbies and some MW2 crowd but I just don't know what the complaints are about. Just be glad we have a place to shoot.

The weather is still way too dry. Notice all the static electricity in the air?

We called burro the other day to get a private range and they said they are booked until March 2012!!!!

LC is getting annoying with the unannounced BLM "gun checks". It's always fun when they stop by to shut the range down to have a look see. At times BC feels like an accident waiting to happen. West End is nice, if you can get use to all the hornets in the summer. I still miss the range at Fish Canyon

A co-worker of mine called back in early Novembert in order to get a private range for January, but now some of his buddies called a week after to get one in February and March. Now, he is setup to go onece a moth starting the new year, I was thinking about calling and getting one for April.

I would just call and get one in March, time flies and March will be here before you know it.

It is getting dryer by the day. We'll a couple weeks of soaking rain before steel jacketed ammo will be safe to shoot.
