Default Food Storage in the Car

I'm driving to see some family soon, and don't want to be in the mountains with a 2 day walk ahead of me in case of a breakdown.

Besides my walk out bag, which has a rotated food supply, does anyone keep food in their car for a longer planned period?

If so, what do you have?

I live in SoCal Long Beach so my car tends to get hot and MRE's don't like the heat.

Anytime I drive out of the local area, I toss an MRE or two in the truck.

Mayday, Datrex, or Mainstay ration bars. Any of these will work for long term, extreme temperature food storage in the car. I personally have a couple of Datrex bars and Datrex water pouches in each car. But I'd buy any of the above if the price was right.

I still have some organic(ish) fruit rollup type snacks that have lived in my range backpack for 4+ years. It has been on countless non-range trips and left in my car, truck, trunk for weeks in both hot and cold (as hot and cold as it can get in central cali, that is) I ate and shared some with friends a couple months ago at the range. They're a bit harder now than they were new, but still tasted good and didnt make us sick.

Yeah, well, I've got some pretty old MRE's. Like Desert Storm era. Those will go to unprepared neighbors in case of the pending armageddon. But I normally have a couple snack bars, jerky and mre's in the truck anyway, along with a couple bottles of water. One of those filter bottles is handy and doesn't take up much room. In fact, you can keep a couple things in it.

For longer trips, I pack accordingly.

I would not consider myself a hardcore doomsday prepper, but I do keep the bug out bag that I did add hemorrhoid relief products to in the trunk of my car and another bug out bag in the house.

I keep a couple MREs in the trunk.
They don't last as long given the temp ranges, so I swap them out every 6 months.

Whatever you do, you need to swap it and have the discipline to keep these in a bag and then remove it so it doesn't cook on in the big heat cars get - even ration bars.

More important than food on this situation, is water. And enough water for more than a day for x amount of people. That can add up.

I just throw my B.O.B. in the car when I take long hauls. Other than that I keep a GHB all the time. Three days worth of food & plenty of water.

There is a really Easy solution to the MRE heat Problem A cheap Coleman Cooler in the trunk with a blue Ice pack (10 Dollar Investment) during the summer and odd hot days. I am able to carry 6 MREs with me at all times without worrying about them spoiling on me.
If you do not mess with it it will stay nice an cool all day.

Also I thought Id let you know I don't keep the whole MRE with me. Candy, hot cocoa, Gatorade etc... are a nice treat for soldiers in the field for months but aren't required for you to get back home. I take out everything except Main Entree/Side Dish and heating pouch.
This Also helps with the fact that this little amount of food doesn't fill you up. During my time in the service I learned that you are most physically capable when you are Slightly Hungry.

Have you guys seens the mayday bar brand water pouches? Ive got three 1 qts for every mayday bar i keep in the car. Ive got maybe 10? Mayday bars. They were a gift and i havent opened either. Just seems like a good idea. I know eating all those ration bars and MRE'S are a ***** without water.

The bag I keep in my truck to grab if I break down and have to shelter or leave has a Mainstay ration bar in it. Good for one adult for three days. I bought and tried a number of these emergency rations, and the Mainstays were by far the best. Best flavor (mild lemon cookie taste), texture/consistency, and they don't make you thirsty. You can get em for about 9 bucks on Amazon right now.

I keep that bag and a bunch of other stuff in a Pelican case thats secured to the cargo area of my SUV. Due to temperature concerns, I lined the Pelican with that mylar insulating bubble wrap stuff. Definitely helps in CA summers. That box also has a couple of MREs and water bottles.

Put the MRE's in a big Zip Lock bag, buy dry ice...store some water bottles in cooler and toss in the MRE's in the cooler...

Mountain House, MRE's, Mayday Bars, And Jerky are usually in my trunk when hitting road trips! Oh, plus lots of H2O and beer!

Mountain house, cliff bars, bag of mixed nuts,1-2 gallons of water.

Anyone have experience eating mountain house that has been in the trunk for a year or two?

Mountain house in a CAN is the way to go in a car, they have a 25 year shelf life, I don't know if that true but better than a shelf life around 5 years for those MREs

25 years at what temperature? Heat degrades it quickly. Cars can get over 100 degrees when parked in the sun. My food goes in only when I travel out of town. It is a pain but storing it in hot sun does not work, car stored water gets rotated every 3 months.

Ration bars were made to withstand extreme temperatures, up to 150 degrees. I don't think a trunk gets hotter than that does it?
