Targets for SCPRC clinic

I'm going to run over to APS this weekend and P/U some of my steel targets, bases, frames, backers etc for next weekend.

What do we need, what is everyone else bringing?

Wish I had something to contribute to that effect.. but all i'm bringing is probably a stand for paper.. and a bowling pin

i have two paper targets that will be set up, and one small 6-8inch steel target that rk hooked up for me.

don't worry, i'll probably buy a bag of small potatoes for us. bring your spray paint, we'll need it.

Those are a given! I just don't have any "durable" targets. I wouldn't be opposed to picking up some needed materials or contributing funds if needed though!

I'll have a 2/3 size IPSC steel target as well as a 10 inch circle. Theres another circle already out there. I have some 10"x18" or so pieces of steel that I need to mount up. I'll try to do it this weekend. Work has been crazy lately!

I've got a 3" resetting plate, 2 mini poppers, 6" plate, 8" plate, a mini maiden (remember the guy on the hill); 3 steel bases, 4 jammit bases; 4 bird boards for jammit (they hold 9 clay birds each), 4 backers for jammit; plus sticks and cardboard for steel bases (ala APS - my bases are similar except they're armored and stick into the ground). This is stuff I've accumualted to use at the matches I run. What do we need?

I suggest some appropriate paper targets for zeroing since not everyone may have their rifles zeroed yet.

anything you can stick in your truck without too much drama.

Here's another suggestion. I'm not sure if you'll get this far, but, helium balloons. It's good for duplicating the erratic movement of a live person. Even at 100 yards these can be a challenge to shoot.

helium sounds good, but you gotta move that back a little to more like 400yards at least. a helium baloon is like a 10inch target even though it will have some movement.

Only blow them up to about the size of a human head. That shouldn't be much wider than about 8 inches max (I know, I know, some calgunners have much bigger heads than that ). In a sporadic 5 mph wind, you'd be surprised how much that balloon moves around.

OK well I'll load up the steel & bases etc and a couple of bird boards etc. What we use we use and what we don't we don't. Do we need birds? I've got bio birds at APS (I think I still have a case of midis stashed for the matches if we need them) I know Ryan has a Mini IPSC similar to my mini maiden do I need to bring it?

one of those should be plenty good. if ryan brings his we should be good, and we have a spot that is perfect for the 800yard shot. you can bring birds if you want that is up to you. whatever you want to shoot is fine. the aps stuff is biodegradable so it's all good.

what would be nice are small steel plates, the circular kind that is about 8inches or so. we can probably take those to around the 900yard mark, mayby more.

Mine has a tube along the top to put a chain through. It may or may not work on a stand. We hung it on a barbed wire t-post last time and it did OK. Its 25"x15". I have another one thats 17"x10" but it has a hole in it to hang on a bolt or something. I'll see what I can do about some stands that will work.

The one we left out there is 10 inches. We could take those circles and put them a little off to the right by the rocks. We may get a little more range that way.

My maiden is the mount on post with a bolt type and I can get a couple of bases for them if needed. My plates use 2x2 posts which I have as well as the bases. Hell half the time at APS I just pound the post into the ground a foot or so. I also have an 8" and 10" that are swingers with thier own base.

How flat is the "range area"?

I'm almost ready to suggest the three of us get together on the phone manana so this thread doesn't go on forever.

pretty flat for about 300 yards or so, then it goes uphill at around 10 degrees or so till 800yards. then there is this crazy hill that goes extremly high like the APS mountains in the back to i'm thinking a 1000yards. we can shoot in two directions which is completely safe.

if you really wanted to go competely nuts, there is this valley which is actually state property behind my dad's place that you can shoot like 1700yards or so, but i don't think anyone could shoot that far. it would be totally nutz though if someone could.

I think an extra stand would work well for that smaller target I have. We can put the bigger one where we had it last time as it worked out well enough.

The range area should be flat enough to get the targets upright. Its on a slight incline so out to 850 yards or so, there is a good backstop.

well I do know someone with a .408 Chey Tac and someone else with a .338 Lapua . . . hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm . . . that'll be another time

oh no, don't get me started on a .338 lupua that is one gangsta rifle! will a .300 winmag go that far?

A .308 will go out to about 1100 - 1200, a 300 winmag 1200 - 1300

I want a .408 Chey Tac, it holds the record of 19" group at a little over 2300 yards. I need that rifle . . .

actually the coolest part about that rifle is the action and the new target trigger....I've been thinking of building one of those up as savage sells just the action for like $400

That is what I heard, just the single shot thing turns me off. I normally single load but I like the option to mag load. I took the single shot follower out of my rifle a while ago.

I'm trying to figure out how to do a 338 lapua in a savage action.
