Default Ruger Rotary Mag Cleaning / Assembly

I have a ruger rotary mag that is causing failure to feed.

I checked the internet and found plenty of vids on how to take apart and clean. Seems simple enough.

I also found a tool that help with reassembly. http://www.borelsports.com/shop/ruge...assembly-tool/

Has anyone used one of these? I guess for $14 I can be the guinea pig.

The tool seems like it would make life easier. I've only cleaned a couple 10-22 mags, and those were pretty beat up. Generally I just grab a couple when they are on sale.

I have done it without any special tool. It just takes a bit of tinkering to get it right, after a couple it gets easier and easier.

Default regular maintenance

Can't you just squirt the insides with a good slovent and use compressed air to flush out debri?

I find it's best to take'em down. Clean 'em and re-tension. I even re-tension the new ones!

Haven't used it, Thanks tho! I clean my mags about every brick, or two trips & it pays off! Last week I shot 300 rounds (different ammo) in my 10/22 without a single issue, never said that before & I'm 48. I use my fingers, kinda tough, but Don't want more tools.

So 1 1/2 turns is the magic number for tension? Cool to know!

I have 6 rotary mags and clean them once a year. Cleaning the mags seems to help. Rarely do I have FTF even shooting cheap bulk ammo. This is one of my winter projects. When doing the reassem, seems like you should have three small hands instead of two big ones. If this tool would speed up the process, probably worth the investment. I know I do not get the spring tension the same on all
six.

I suppose that the tool would make it easier, but they're really not all that hard to deal with. Since the spring's tension is determined by that octagon, it's easy to keep track of the number of rotations required.

^ ^ ^ That one. Soak (in what ever dip solvent in a can) over night and blow it out.

Turn the nut to the next flat position & move 8 spots. I never used to clean mine, they all misfeed when dirty enough. Dont soak them, take them apart, you'll get better results.

Cool tool!

I wonder if it'll work for my 10/22 magnum mags as well. Are they the same as the 10/22 .22LR mags?

Guess I'll email them and ask

update: they already got back to me. Gotta love quick customer service.

Their answer:

Hi XXXXX,

The short answer is, " Don't know". We have never tested the Magnum magazines. Sorry we could not be more helpful, but do not want to sell you something that will not work.
Maybe I'll try one for grins....if I do, I'll update this thread

Before reloading my 10/22 I turn them over and tap them a couple times to knock out unburned powder and gunk. It really helps. In the past I would just box up magazines that were giving me failures to feed and send them back to Ruger for FREE replacement.
