CAI receivers are cast, not forged like the originals, they are poorly cast at that, tolerance issues. Also the elevation cuts in the receiver are cast, not cut into the receiver, they will wear quickly. go find a CMP Garand for sale of buy direct from CMP. buy once and save yourself some possible headaches down the road. I have worked on Garands for better than 20 yrs. i personally wouldnt go near a CAI receiver. JT

Or just look through the "for sale" thread here, or go to a few gun shows or shops, they are not hard to find. JT |

I have a Century and just wanted a cheap Garand to put on the wall. I have heard of problems but I took it to the local gunsmith and said the headspacing was fine. I put about 20-50 rounds a year through it so I certainly don't really put it through its paces.
If I had the money and wanted a shooter, I'd go thru CMP and if I shot a lot I'd get one from Fulton for the brand new look.

Most Century Garands seem to be o.k. but there were a few with problems. As I recall many of these were built up with parts kits from Danish issue M1 Garands whose receivers could not be legally brought back in the U.S. - much like those poor Danish M1D snipers that got parted out in Canada so the parts kits could be imported here.
Back when Century was assembling and selling their M1 Garands, a lot of people bought them for use as parts to restore CMP Garands or build up rifles on receivers purchased from the CMP. They would be particularly appropriate for restoring/upgrading a Danish return Garand or building up a rifle with a receiver from one of the Danish returns. Some of these Century rifles had nice original WW2 parts and barrels, others had pristine examples of the highly regarded Danish barrels and/or other mixed Danish and Italian (Italy supplied Garands and parts - built with the original Winchester tooling and patterns - to Denmark) parts. The main considerations regarding a Century Garand are: 1. There were problems with the quality of the receivers and their dimensions on some of these, so it is something you would want to get checked out. 2. Because the receivers are recent commercial production, they are not C&R like a real U.S. military M1 rifle. 3. You have to view them as a "sum of the parts/value of the parts" proposition. If the price approaches that of a CMP Garand, they're not that good of a deal. CMP rifle also has much better investment value and will go up in value more than the Century rifle. Notabiker,,,,, there is quality casting, (Like the compressor blades on a jet engine) and there is poor quality casting, CAI castings are the latter. Yes, your m1a is a casting, and probably a good one, but SA has had its share of issues with the casting of thier receivers.
Exodus,, cast receivers are made by pouring molten steel into a mold that closely conforms to the shape you wish and lightly machining to dimensions, with molten steel you do not get the "grain" of the steel to align and it will be a weaker part than a forged one. With forging a solid block of steel is shaped under heat and a forging hammer that hammers the steel into the basic shape you want, it is then extensively machined to get the finished part. Since the heat and pressure of the forging hammer "align" the steels grain it will be a lot stronger part. On U tube there is a video of the forging process at Springfield Armoury. |

casting, when done right is a perfectly acceptable means of reaching what your desired goal in manufacturing. I suggest re reading post #4. Quality is not something added at the end of the manufacturing proccess, garbage in usually equates to garbage out.
