Default Thank you J&G - My new Walther P38/P1

Along with the CZ82, I also bought another one of the pistols I have wanted since I was a kid and always saw in the movies. My first Walther. Granted, I didn't spend the $759.00 for a Nazi marked one with the steel frame and matching numbers. After reading a lot of articles, I think that many of these are fakes, I would only buy one if it had some paper or provenance. I was looking for a fun shooter.

I did buy this number matching P38 though. Once again, the nice folks at J&G let me look at four or five of these to choose the one I wanted. Barrel is nice and shiny, the pistol was well lubed and just a little holster wear. I am really looking forward to shooting this one. I know not to use any hot loads in it and I will probably just shoot it on special occasions. I think this is a very impressive gun for $349.00. Bought a spare magazine, can't wait to take this one to the range next week.

What do you think?

Or for $129.00 five years ago. Glad I got this one, they will probably be $500.00 in a couple of years.

Don't use Remington USP ammo in it. My P1 kept jamming with it. I looked around and a lot of other guys were having the same problem with the ammo. It's a blast to shoot otherwise.

Mine had the same issues with USP. I couldn't find a commercial ammo that was accurate in it, either. I ended up slugging the barrel and it mic'd to .357, so now I hand load it with 125gr 357 bullets. The difference was amazing. It likes to shed the top cover and rear sight every so often, I'd like to keep that from happening, but don't exactly know why it does that. Last time it happened I was experimenting with HP's and had a few stovepipe jams, so that might be it.

I don't like Remington ammo anyway. I will probably just run some WWB through it and see how it shoots.

That's a very nice looking pistol, congratulations on your purchase. Despite how much it used to cost it still seems like a bargain for what you paid for it.

That is one sexy spy novel piece you have there. I would be very happy to have that pistol in my safe. How does she shoot?

I bought three unissued Walther P1s 6 months ago from turners, they were on their discontinued list. I really love P38/P1s.

Where are the import marking printed/engraved on J&G P38/P1? some importers do it on the slide, that really looks ugly.

thanks

I hope it will be, I am still on my business trip, have not yet had a chance to shoot it. And Scottsdale Gun Club is just right down the street. Frustration over delayed gratification.

Actually, that was a pretty good deal.

I got an "Issued" P1 for $289. I figured I was going to shoot it anyway, so I didn't care if it was showing a little wear.

Nice pistol, man!

I love my Walther P1! It really, REALLY likes Aguila 124gr. FMJ. It's powerful but not +P powerful, and it functions wonderfully. You can pick p cases of it for around $199, which is a deal in my opinion for re-loadable brass cased ammo.

Here's some over at SGammo for $197: http://www.sgammo.com/product/aguila...ain-fmj-ammo-0

They are putting it on the underside of the barrel.

Just a follow up, I have taken this pistol to both the indoor and outdoor range. It shoots very nicely, is more accurate than I am, I was plinking soda cans at 50 yards with no problem. Took it to the indoor range and shot some nice groups with it at 10 yards. Not a single FTF, FTE or stovepipe. Have been running Miwall reloads and WWB 115GR through it, flawless.

One strange thing I noticed when I was cleaning it. The slide on the left side that I have in the picture above says, "P38 Cal 9mm" underneath the Walther logo, but on the other side of the slide it says, CAI" and has their information and it also says "P1"?!?! Weird. When you remove the slide and barrel, the body is definitely aluminum and not steel but the slide is definitely steel and says both P38 and P1 on it.

I know the gun is probably a mixmaster but interesting that the slide says both P38 on the Walther side and P1 in the CAI side?

Great gun, very happy I bought it.

For the hell of it one day I shot my ww2 P38 on the two hundred yd. range at my local club, windage was dead on but shot almost 6' low. Once realizing this we were able to hit a highpower target pretty constistently. Amazing for a pistol.
