She used to have a 380 but sold it because she needed money. So, I would like to find a new handgun for her since she's home alone most of the time. She's in TX and I'm stuck in CA trying to make my way out there. Have to find a job first. I used to have a Shield and an XDS so I'm familiar with those two but are there others that I should consider for her. She's a small thing at 5'. She has shot my XD9 and XDm but thinks the recoil is harsh on them.
What would you guys that have girlfriends, wives or significant others with handguns suggest? |

Generic answer is 'have her try a bunch and decide for herself'. Lots of stories that run 'I thought she'd like [this little thing], but turns out she likes a full-sized 1911'.

Get something you want. Chicks like to say they have guns way more than actually shoot them. If someone thinks a 9mm is too harsh, they wont be comfortable shooting anything other than a .22.

Wife is a mid-40s petite 5’ 1” Asian. This is her pistol - Glock 19 Gen 3 with Holosun HS407CO (8MOA circle).
She’s also taken this to several defensive handgun classes with no issues, etc. I have attached a Tungsten guide rod with reduced recoil spring and have her just use 147GR factory. ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Unless she will actually practice, failure drills, reloads, etc I would not recommend anything but a revolver.
I have seen countless times when a pistol jams or needs a reload and all of a sudden they become like a deer in headlights. Not being sexist but most women don't understand the mechanics, ie, if there is a round in the chamber. Most times at the range when there is an issue with the gun not going bang they will just hand it to someone to fix it and make it go bang again. This is not to say women cannot become proficient, in fact some I shoot against are better than me by a long shot but it takes ongoing training and practice. My wife shoots a semi auto very well but at home there is a .357 for her and she knows all she has to do is point and pull the trigger.

QUOTE] I will disagree. I agree with letting her try a bunch And for the home- since $$$ is not free - have you considered cheaper guns? Shotgun with reduced recoil Ammo? 10/22? While 22lr is not great for self defense. Most people can pick up a 10/22 and get hits. In Texas a 25 round mag is easy too.

Sounds like you are trying to convince her that she likes small things. Sheesh, the lengths some guys will go to.

That's the story of my wife. I started her on 38 spl, as well as a .380, but she tried a Kimber 1911 and for some odd reason she thinks its a softer shooter than the other two. |

I agree. Larger is easier to shoot for my petite wife, too. She is very accurate with the Glock 19 to 10 yards, but she's shockingly accurate and faster with the 17, despite its larger size. Recoil is easier for her with the larger gun.

Get her a https://www.smith-wesson.com/product/model-642 or one of the ones with an exposed hammer. Many grip sizes available even ones with a laser.

A 410 with buckshot will blow a 2" hole in someone.
If she's not going to carry outside the home, it's going to be hard to come up with something better than a shotgun IMO.

Get her a Ruger Mark IV for now.
When you visit, go to a rental range and let her try several. 4" S&W 686+ with .38 special may not be much recoil, but she needs to get a feel for her limits. Glock 17/34 as stated above. Depending on the .380, the 9mm 17/34 will be less "snappy". Heavy but lower recoil: CZ SP-01 9mm

OP- why buy a roster handgun in California with all the associated costs, then have the FFL ship it to a Texas FFL, and then have your girlfriend receive it from there? Why not just send her the funds and let her do it? There's plenty of stuff available in TX that you can only drool over. Either wait until you're in Texas or let her go shopping with your credit card.

There is a misconception that a smaller person needs a smaller gun, when larger guns are much easier to shoot well. Normally, the limit is the grip size, not the gun size.

1) Attend training with her.
2) Rent a few guns after training. She will have a better idea of which attributes work for her. 3) Buy her a full rig. Belt, holster, two mag holders, Trijicon HD XR night sights, six mags, 200 rounds of JHP. She may like the SIG P365XL, Glock 19, HK P30SK with Lite LEM, S&W M&P 9 Compact, etc. Last edited by tomrkba; 04-07-2021 at 4:03 PM.. |

A 365 is a good gun, but it is small. I haven't shot mine yet, but my Glock 26 is a handful. I can't imagine that a 365 would be pleasant for an inexperienced shooter, especially a small and/or weak one.

Was the 380 a blowback action? They have terrible felt recoil to web of hand. IMHO

You don't mention the purpose of the gun. If it's NOT for CCW, I'd stay away from small guns. If it is for CCW, Glock 19 size is as small as I would go and I'd work with her on how to successfully carry it.
If she's adamant about getting a smaller gun (smaller than G19 size) then she should go to a range and start trying guns and see what she likes. She should do that anyway for a larger gun but particularly if she intends to go small. She'll sort out more in an afternoon at the range than anything any of us can tell you. Have her start with 9mm's and see if she can find something she can shoot comfortably.

So much of it is personal preference. I have a Ruger sp101 3", and a sw model 19 in 2.5", very close in size and weight. I vastly prefer the feel of shooting the Ruger, even though the 19 objectively has far better sights and trigger. Something about the Ruger just feels better to me. If I can't even know which guns I will like for sure before I shoot them, knowing which your girlfriend will like is likely to be much harder.
Heavier is generally better for most shooters imo, unless it's too big in the hand in which case it is uncomfortable in a different way. And ultimately how much we enjoy a gun, including silly factors like esthetics and personal connection, partially dictates how often we shoot and therefore how useful it is when needed. So make a day of it, take her out, rent and shoot at a range, buy her something she likes, take her out to a nice dinner afterwards and create good memories around it. What I would do anyways. |

Really? The PPK is a blowback and it's pretty tame compared to 9mm with WWB. I loaded some with the "freakshow" recipe and it felt like a .22lr.

What part of Texas is she in? Riflegear in The Colony, TX has a range there that has a lot of handguns for her to shoot and try out. I agree with the sentiment that she should get the a larger handgun rather than a smaller pocket size one unless that is all she can carry.

Heavy 9mm handguns usually are my fiance preference. Two handguns I would recommend is CZ SP01 because of the steel frame felt recoil is minimal. Another good choice would be a 1911 9mm because full size 1911 shooting 9mm is a really easy to shoot.

I got my wife a heritage rough rider convertible 22. Cheap. Available. Very safe with low recoil. Single action. Pull hammer back, pull trigger. Simple. No charging, no worries about misfire because of limp wristing it. She liked it.

In Texas....
1. A light wheel gun with .38 wadcutters. Simple no brainer trigger pull 2. Ruger 10/22 with binary trigger and 25 round mag.

When you suggest little 380s and revolvers for women, you show your ignorance. You and the women you're suggesting little 380s and revolvers to need training. Good training.
Here are 11 and 12 year old girls shooting full size pistols. |

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I actually try to get out to TX at least once a month unless I decide to go for a few weeks then it's every other month or so. I wouldn't be trying to get a handgun out here, but needed ideas of some for her to try while I'm out there. The first time I took her shooting I noticed that her grip was wrong (tea cupping) and I have been working with her to correct that. Her dad is the one that taught her to shoot and her best guy friend has been reinforcing that grip, or lack of grip. So, I had to show him the proper way to grip a semi automatic handgun.
