So, I'm a hard hunter and I have acces to private land so sag soup is a pretty rare occorance for me but WTF is up with the california point system . It is definitely broken . It seemed good in 2006 when max point were 3 .but now it the haves vs the have nots . And I'm not ok with that. There either needs to be a moderate max on points. Or we need a higher percentage of available tags to go to lottery.
Like other guys have mentioned in the late 90s and early 2000s I knew many guys who were able to hunt G3, x5b, g37, m3 , griz bull , antelope.
And now it's a BS game guys with good A,B,D private land or $$$ to hunt out of state sit on their points for their chance at a hot rod tag . And the rest of the have nots are eating tag soup . I'm done with that game I know I can fill a c, a every year so no more deer points for me .

In simple terms, if you did not enter the draw the very first year it stared, and if you have not entered every single year since, your mostly screwed. This seems to be extremely unfair to those who are new to hunting, just moved to CA in the last 16-17 years and those who may have missed a year or two entering the drawing. Even with max points, there are so many people who have them, that in some situations those max point hunters could die of old age before the draw. This draw system was not well thought out to be honest. To try to add some fairness to a broken sysytem, I would suggest that they change the 10% random draw (or set aside tags) to 30-40% of the tag allotment. If nothing is changed, your chance of drawing a so called "premium tag" going forward is about as good as winning the lottery. I can buy an over the counter elk tag in Colorado any year, but will likely die before I draw a bull tag in CA.

"change the 10% random draw (or set aside tags) to 30-40% of the tag allotment."

Or cap maximum points at 10 or 12. This would be fair to those who have waited but still gives hope to new hunters.

There are some tags that the odds of drawing in ones lifetime are astronomical with or without a point system.

I think more along the lines of 50% to random draw or even 100% random with points actually multipling your entries .
Anyhow, I think any change in this area is a great start . How do we go about leveraging overlords to take action ?

I just put in for MA3 and MA1. I just love hiking and camping in freezing rain carrying a 12lb muzzleloader. I really understand the meaning behind the expression “keep your powder dry” rather than it just being an antiquated aphorism.

At least the chances of drawing a tag are really good even if though the success rates are not.

I’m interested to see how the Thomas Fire may have affected things when we start scouting.

Put in for X9c, have 2 pts. Agree that the system need to be fixed so newer hunters have a chance at a good zone. But heck, jackrabbits are almost as good as venison if they're cooked right, so I don't mind too much.

Change of plans. Girlfriend had a disneyland trip planned for the opening week of X4 so we put in for G1, G3, D3-5. With no points we actually have a fighting chance at drawing G1 tags where X4 would be almost impossible with no points. And after hunting X4 last year, I sort of know the general area near G1 now which is nice. My son's hunter ed class got rescheduled to Saturday so if he passes we will add him to our hunt party.

Good luck everyone.

Giant bummer! My son passed his hunter ed today with flying colors. He turns 12 in August, so he will be old enough to hunt big game when the general season opens but they won't let him join our party for the big game draw because he's currently 11 years old. That sucks big time. I was hoping to let him start accumulating points this season. But I'll still get him a D3-5 tag on his birthday, hopefully they aren't sold out by then.

I picked up a clay launcher and a few hundred clays so we are going out to the BLM land behind our local lake tomorrow to get him tuned up for bird and small game season.

I put in for grizzly cow elk. Last year 8 tags were split amongst 134 applicants. Everything else a point.

Issuing 8 tags out of 134 applicants is actually very good odds considering many of the other elk draws. How many preference points do you have Lew? I too put in for a elk cow hunt at Grizzly Island Period 7.

One of these years I'll draw something good...

I've got a muley buck and cow elk tag for eastern Oregon, but my California hunts are always bottom of the barrel!

I wisely stopped supporting a state that doesn't support the sportsman or the habitat like they are supposed to do.

I believe they have 10 days to do the drawing. So, we should get notified around the 12th.

When will f and GAME step into the modern era. Draw results should be automatic based on a formula.

As crazy as it sounds people still mail in their applications. Pretty hard to instantly input that data while they wait for USPS to deliver the mail.

So...what did you draw?

For me, the usual...nada.

But my 12 yr old son drew an any-sex hunt. Excited to get him his first deer this year!

wife and I made a "group application" for an antlerless Elk in La Panza.

We got an elk point and a pat on the butt.

Ah well, maybe I'll give this rabbit/squirrel thing a try. :-)

Drew X9C. Excited to hunt that country. Nothing but points for elk. I gave up on antelope after making a mistake one year and not having max points.

To phrase it more clearly, did you put in for premium zones as all three choices each year?
