Power Options
Ok, so I have this idea and I need to know if it can be done.
I want to have the option of secondary power for my house. what I would like is one device that can accept multiple power options. Basicly what i'm thinking is something like an alternator hooked up to a flywheel. I would like to be able to easily connect said flywheel to either a windmill, a steam boiler or even a hand crank. Ever seen a turn key solution? Also is it possible to install a switch to take your house off the grid?

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but eventually I would like a system incorporating a permanent magnet alternator and a couple solar panels.

Not sure what you are looking for.
Most newer generators are in fact Alternators. My house is solar - Battery - Generator. I can go completely off grid by just throwing a switch. In fact I have to throw the switch to start the generator and not back feed the power lines. Takes about a 12 kv system to run a house like ours with a well. This time of the year with short days and low light the solar system has a tough time keeping up. We don't use as much water at this time of the year so that helps with load. |

Cool, thanks for the reply. I haven't been able to find any one thing in a turn key kind of solution but I'm still looking.

The "off the grid switch" is called a transfer switch.
http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/c....aspx?a=440890 As for the fly wheel universal connector...not seen anything. However, the old water wheel mill wheels and leather belts come to mind.

yes, what TheChief said.
you need a transfer switch, or a few of them inline to control which source is feeding our panel. they make automatic transfer switches as well. you can run solar, generator, utility company as multiple sources and switch between them. you can even run a battery array as a UPS for your entire house if you want... |
