There was a time that I thought my friend with nine guns had an INSANE number of guns. I mean, why would you need NINE guns when you could only shoot one at a time I thought.

lol, and now you need a spreadsheet to keep count.

I would too if I had the extra funds.

You would only need nine guns if you had eight. Otherwise if you have nine, you need ten. It's simple really.

It's not possible for someone in that scenario to have too many.

However, for the other 99.9% of us, there IS such a thing as "too many". Usually, it's dictated by our budget - if your gun collection is causing debt, or an inability to properly save money, then you have too many guns. If your collection is taking up so much space that you can't properly store them in safes, and it's taking up too much of your home, then you have too many guns. And if it's negatively affecting other aspects of your life (wife says if you buy any more guns then she'll leave you, or you're unable to go on vacations or enjoy other things you want to do, then you probably have too many guns. Especially if some of the guns are ones that you never shoot, and never plan to shoot, and are not sentimental. Maybe time to ditch some of the superfluous ones, in this scenario.

I, for one, am not yet at the threshold of "too many guns," and mine number in the dozens. I figure that if I ever get to the point where I open a safe and discover that I have guns that I don't even remember having, then it might be time to slow down, but I'm nowhere near that point yet. Every one of my guns has a strategic purpose and a valid reason I own it, except for one heirloom shotgun that I never shoot but will never get rid of. That said, MOST new guns I could buy would duplicate the function of another gun I already own, which is why I haven't bought anything new in the last year.
Well said I like the way you put that.....I think one of those scenarios you’ve mentioned applies to just about everyone.

No such thing as too much if you are a collector.

Wallis Simpson once said you can never be too rich or too thin, have to many guns or too much ammo. Or something like that.

Purely subjective.

1 may be enough for some, 10 covers a few bases and 100+ is an amateur collector in some circles. There is no definition of "normal", that is individual interpretation.

If the cops need only one vehicle to haul away your collection, you need more stuff.

Train with 50 railroad cars still counts as one vehicle?

I can’t say as to normal. I would bet average is probably 3-5. I know guys w a handgun, rifle, shotgun. I think if you can reach the 100 mark you’re a proper collector. For me it’s what do I participate in and what do I need to do so. Trap gun, sporting/hunting shotgun. Small game rifle, large game. Self defense carry gun, home defense gun, defense shotgun, guns for competition etc. they’re like tools. While you may be able to use one tool for many purposes you can get better results w tools specialized for each task.

This is the way I explain to my wife at least

I voted 1-10 for "average" == "normal". I don't really see it as abnormal to have 50-100+ or whatever, it just means you're a "normal" collector.

I'd guess that the average gun owner probably has at least 1 pistol, 1 shotgun, 1 rifle though, so 1-10 was my vote. The 1200+ guys are extreme outliers.

I enjoy shooting too much to have to deal with too many guns.

I have what you consider to be the higher end of number of pistols, but I have only a few rifles and they are vintage military for collecting, and I have no shot guns.

I get it, there are those that like "stuff", and for some, that "stuff" is guns, which I of course think is awesome.

But it nags at me to have too many firearms sitting collecting dust especially if they are everyday run of the mill firearms.

Having more than you can shoot or enjoy looking at is too much. When you look in the back of your safe, and forgot you had a certain gun that's when it's too much.
