Default K31

Once again I seen to have fallen victim to my nearly uncontrollable urge to buy random old guns. This time I ran into what I felt was a fair deal on a K31. My son has one and I have always felt that if I wanted to shoot one, I would just borrow his, but this seemed like a pretty good deal at $225 so I threw down the Benjamins and brought it home.

My research of the serial number says it was made in 1954 and like nearly everyone of these I have seen, the metal is in about 100% condition with matching numbers on the receiver, bolt and magazine, the bore is perfect and the stock is somewhat beat. I succumbed to my usual OCD and have purchased a correct sling dated the same year the rifle was made and a bayonet. I am starting to think I may have a problem......

Serial number says 1954

I like the Swiss crest, also the perfect bluing. The entire rifle is like this.

Angry beavers attacked the butt.

But the front isn't too bad.

I'm going to order some of the surplus GP11 (or whatever is available) tomorrow and take it out to the desert and see how it does.

That was definitely a "no brainer" price. Very good pick up!

Great price on that one. You really can't go wrong with a K31.

It is always nice to find things that are priced as if the seller has been living in a cave for a few years. They weren’t that cheap even when they were that cheap!

Great score for about 40% of regular retail price these days.

I got to shoot my K31 yesterday. Despite the shoulder still feeling tenderized, it was awesome rifle. That bolt is smooth and fast, and the trigger is light and crisp. I hope more GP11 will be available soon, though...

Oooh, that is unfortunate. No longer any real collector value without the TT. Better off unloading that one ASAP. I will offer a generous bail out at the price you paid so you can find a “legit” K31, all of which have TT. I have some K31 Tactical sporter truck gun ideas, and it will make a great donor gun!

LMK where to send the funds!!

Bobby, I always knew you were a stand-up kind of guy and you post just proves it. But, I wouldn't want anyone else to have to deal with the massive disappointment of having a K31 without a troop tag, so in the interest of not spreading the misery any further, I will man up and keep this one.

I did do something to assuage my crushed feelings though, I located a matching number, non refinished, Gewehr 98 with a very nice bore for a decent price. Since I know how everyone likes to look at the junk I drag home, I will post pictures as soon as it arrives next week.

When and if you find some GP11 look for a few six round chargers they make life somewhat easier.

My rifles came with two chargers each.

Cheers

mj1,

I've never seen 7.5 Swiss ammo like that before with the ridges... What brand is it?

I have some GP11, none of mine look like that.

Question for you guys with K31. I have one of those red chargers and a newer plastic charger. When I took my K31 to the range last week, I had trouble getting the last round seated in the magazine. Any tips?

Which charger failed ? I was about to ask if anyone has tried the polymer charger and with what results.

That's a nice rifle. Been thinking about getting one lately, but am holding off on anything not 9mm/45acp/223/308 until I see how the new ammo laws are going to play out.

Anyone know of anywhere to get ammo for this in northern CA, etc?

The internet. With an FFL03 and COE (My Fat Friend Chloe) you can have it mailed right to your door.

Both plastic and the red one. It's not really a failure, but the last round end up hanging around on top of the magazine.

Classic had some GP11 and it was a little on the pricy side. I didn't get any.
Getting a K31 at OP's price don't happen often unless some family or good friend will sell. I been really lucky
