Default hunting gophers

Anyone else hunting gophers in their yards? I've taken 3 with my scoped CO2 rifle and a fat one with a trap. I have one now that's really sly. It's almost like he can smell that I'm around. Last year was the first time we had gophers at all. There was a large construction project nearby that made them flee to our yard. Do they make Claymores for gophers?

Used alfalfa pellets and carrot tops for bait in traps worked well

There is a professional mole and gopher trapper in Menlo Park that makes his own traps out of stainless steel. www.traplineproducts.com he makes different sizes I bought the small ones about 7yrs ago they will catch the smallest mole or a rabbit sized gopher and will fit in the smallest diameter hole and will last a lifetime.

Macabee gopher traps, the green ones. Been around for over 100 years, sold at any hardware store.
Prep is everything. FRESH holes, TWO traps(one in each direction) of tunnel. COVER. HINT: tie a nylon baling string(or something similar) to each trap. If you've got other pets, put something over the hole so it doesn't get dug up. Come back the next day, never fails if done right, if you don't get a gopher, you weren't paying attention to detail.

They be tricky little critters IMO.

I've caught with shovel while earth moves, but traps not much luck.

I had early success with the Macabee gopher traps. Not so much now. I might try out some of the Trapline traps, those look pretty slick. I did try cooking them with my roofing torch that I use for weeding, but I don't think it's very effective. I've watched a few of those videos with the oxi-acetylene. Looks like fun.

My preferred method is to stomp the gopher mound flat, put my folding chair about 10 ft away, sit there quietly for about 30 minutes, then when he starts to push up a new mound I wait for him to go back down the hole for another load of soil, position the barrel of my .22 WMR revolver about 2' from the hole, and then blast him when his head clears the hole.

I have had succss doing this with .22 Mag shotshells, .22 shorts, and with the .22 WMR. Since I have a sand yard, there is no danger of richochets and there is an intense pleasure in doing them in at close range.

I had better luck with traps by wearing gloves when I set them. It keeps human scent off them.

Sandy: “I want you to kill every gopher on the course!“

Carl Spackler: “Check me if I’m wrong Sandy, but if I kill all the golfers, they’re gonna lock me up and throw away the key…“

Sandy: “Gophers, ya great git! The gophers! The little brown furry rodents!“

Carl Spackler: “We can do that; we don’t even have to have a reason.“

I have read that hunting is not effective. Trapping is the preferred method for eradication.

Before I got my trapline traps I did all of the above but they get smart. My favorite was laying down by the hole with a beer and a 22 rifle and waiting for his head to poke out, until one time I was laying there and somebody asked what I was doing I turned around and said waiting for the gopher to stick his head out the hole. The Policeman that had come into my yard calmly said no discharging of firearms in City Limits.

A buddy of mine got a visit from the police after he dispatched a racoon with a 22 in his back yard one night. I think it got tangled up with his dog. The officer told him, next time at least use a pellet gun.

Then you're either using the wrong pellet gun or need to practice your aim more.

I've killed dozens in my yard (Norco) with a Gamo 880 and a handful with my Diamond Marquis compound bow. My neighbor and I would sit on the patio and gossip until one would poke his head out then "pop". Went from yard pest to dog treat.

My wife uses .357 shot shells. Had a neighbor that put propane in their tunnels and ignited it. Was funny when he got dusted by the blasts

I just drop in a glowing BBQ briquet and cover. The CO gasses everything down there without being a risk to my family and pets. Not to be done near dry grass and brush.

When I was a kid, my mother had a pretty effective technique. First, she'd gather up all the garden hoses she could find, even borrowing from neighbors and run them to the holes at the furthest extent of the yard. What holes she didn't have hoses for, she'd firmly plug, leaving just one open. After turning all the hoses on, she'd then probe the remaining open hole with a stick to learn it's angle and then position herself so the emerging gopher wouldn't see her as he started to come out. With shovel in hand, she dispatched quite a few that way with a good solid hit with the back of the shovel.

I've seen some sort of gopher bomb for sale at hardware stores I have a feeling it is just a road flare. Has anyone tried poisoning them? Obviously that has it's risks around pets.

A friend rigged up a small motor with a hose and shot exhaust down the holes with the escape holes covered and it worked pretty well

I like the water hose method too.

Turn water on to a moderate flow, place in hole and wait for the little gray head to pop up somewhere. A quick bop with one of those miniature baseball bats works fine.

I found traps from HD or Lowes work best. I spray with WD40 so no human scent, and trap works well when lubricated. Clear the mound to find the hole the dirt came out of and open the hole. Slide the trap in with heavy line attached to the trap on one end and a shovel on the other so gopher can't pull the trap down the hole. Leave the hole open. The gopher will sense the open hole because of the light coming in and try to close it, springing the trap. I have caught some in the trap within 5 minutes of setting the trap.
