My EDC has a lock that holds 300 pounds. More than some fixed can stand.

I doubt a fixed setup the same orientation (i.e. not lying flat on its side compared to a Tri-Ad or something spine up) would be weaker. But if it was a Busse, Swamprat, or Scrap Yard, forget about it. A lot of good steel, treated right, can bend and flex way out of true and spring right back.

Side to side strength is pretty weak on a folding knife.

Guys, i just re-read the Cal. knife law sticky (Thanks Librarian as always), my edc folding pocket knife is a Kershaw 1555t; 2 3/4" blade, I thought was OK in Cal. and within in the City of L.A.; but what about "locking" provision for folding knifes; isn't almost every folding knife a "locking" knife, in that it won't close when it's open w/o pressing a tab or something. So is such a knife illegal under Cal. laws because it "locks" open? Sorry for any hijack and thanks very much for any assistance.

My interpretation is...

a folding knife that is normally legal would be illegal the same as a fixed blade if you CARRIED it locked open CONCEALED. If you close it and carry it concealed it is fine. If you OPENLY carry it locked open like your would have to legally carry a fixed blade it is fine.
