Cleaning guns. A Woman's point of view.
I am not the woman with the point of view. This one is...
/my-dirty-little-secret-of-cleaning-guns I especially liked this method...

Water won't hurt metal guns if it is dried and oiled properly immediately after words. I wouldn't do this with certain plastic parts or poor quality metal, but firearms with SS barrels/slides and so forth are just fine.

Have you ever watch "Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot!" with Stallone and Estelle Getty? She did almost the same thing! I think she took a 3M pad to one of his Blued Revolvers and said it was dirty and now it's nice and shiny!
HA!

I have a friend that does this with his black powder revolvers; swears by it.

This method works very well at stripping the cosmoline that's usually caked on in those C&R firearms.

Call me crazy but, I don't like the concept of all the crap from my guns getting on my dishes. How'd she put it, "The modern day power of steam, soap, and dry heat." Yeah, someone might want to tell her that those don't always remove everything. Ever see a dish come out with food still stuck on it? Maybe if I had a dedicated machine to do this with.
Anyway, what about areas that are not easily accessible without doing a detail strip? I could see some serious rust forming in these areas even with an air compressor and WD40.

I use extremely hot soapy water to clean corrosive milsurp ammo residue but not in dishwasher! Is your friend married, I doubt it!

God this thread is just wrong! I will not even concieve of doing this. All the hair will fall from my chest and I will be haunted by the ghost of John Moses Browning until I die an agonizing and humiliating death involving kitchen appliances. No No No No! I wont do it I wont!

I had a frend who worked at an indoor range who told me that's how they cleaned their rentals. I've thought about doing it before but two things kept me from trying it.
1. dishwashers get pretty hot on their drying cycle and I don't want any polymer parts on my guns melting. 2. Most importantly I don't want any lead contaminating my dishes. |

Hoppes and Gun Cleaning

Hot water is useful for black powder. But the foamy black powder clean is the best. I doubt we could get the Brown Bess or Long Rifle in a dishwasher!

Actually, for stainless wheel guns it works quite well. I'd suggest taking off the stocks first.

+1 on the fear of lead residue getting onto your dishes. Next step is it gets into your system, and before you know it, you have a lead poisoning problem. Worst case, your kids (if you have any) damage their neurological systems and it's irreversible.
I would just continue to clean guns the old fashioned way, except the dish soap and old toothbrush method I personally use on my Glock frame. This seems to be ok and the lead residue does not find its way back into my system.. Turby |

Black powder is corrosive, and lots of hot soapy water is just the fix.

I don't see it. Wouldn't the crap the dishwasher didn't remove stay on the gun just like it did on the dish? My dishwasher looks pretty spic and span after a wash. I'm still not doing it though

Apparently not. We (boyfriends) don't clean it well enough, and until we learn how to make the guns spotless, we're banned from using them

Yep. I'm sensitive to certain smells. Luckily, the husband loves cleaning guns so I don't have to.

My wife loves to go shooting, she hunts with me as well. She helps field dress the deer and with butchering. She keeps us fed and stocked up on supplies. No complaints from me if I have to clean all the guns. Besides nobody cleans them to my expectations anyway, so I prefer to do it myself.
I have to admit, it is awful sexy to watch your wife crank off a few rounds from a 50 cal Hawken, lay that down and tear up the paper with an SKS. Her favorite gun is the SKS. I am thinking about getting her an AR in the .223, I have no doubt that she would really like that. |

well lets see what I have done.... guns in the dishwasher, transfer case and transmission parts in the dishwasher, complete firearms in the oven to bake on paint finishes, barrels in the freezer, brass in the washing machine followed by sticking it in the oven to dry it fast....

blah, whats the difference between it being in a 300 degree trunk for a couple hours out in the sun in palm springs or corona?
wow, people scared of water hurting their guns.. i mentioned in another thread, this is how they had us clean our m16a1's in basic training after excercises in the rain and mud, we would string the parts on a hanger and dunk them in big barrels of boiling water a couple of times, then dunk them in warm water to rinse, then under cold water to final rinse, then we would wipe them down and oil them up..
