Default Mossberg 590A1 Mariner

Did I make a good buy here? Made the purchase yesterday. I have always wanted a silver shotgun. Had a Rock Island Armory M5 nickel-plated for a week, but I was not impressed with the quality of the product. Found out RifleGear had 2 590A1 Mariners at their Texas shop.

One was sold while I was struggling with the decision to buy or not to buy. Lol as soon as I saw one had sold I quickly made the purchase. Can't wait to get the DROS started. Going to be driving up from El Cajon.

I’ve been completely satisfied with my stock mariner. Only change is when I throw on the longer barrel for birds. Great gun.

You did good, and that Marinecote finish really works. My friend had one on his boat for years, and that is pretty close to being salt water proof. Keep it clean and it will last you for many many years.

My original M500 ATP6 is coming up on 30 years old in a few months.

oh, and if you've never driven a brand new 500/590, note that in my experience, racking them out of the box is a little tight at first, especially if you have run a broken in 870 in the past.
(i am not such a fan of the remingtons, but only because i have a friend that had extraction failures a few times, and not because i didn't think it worked great with a slick slide.)

anyway, the point is that racking the slide a few dozen (or hundred) times will loosen it up quite a bit if it feels tight to you at first. i am relatively new to the forum so i don't know if this is a normal impression or just me.

You got a 500 MARINER at riflegear? Or a 590? I don't see one there unless you did a PPT?

I have a near new Maverick 88 right now. It was pretty tight out the box, it still is kinda tight. I only fired 25 rounds of 00 Buck through it. I'm going to put the 590A1 furniture on the 88 and the wood furniture from the 88 onto the 590A1. I will be selling the 88 as soon as I get the 590A1. I don't need two shotguns.

I’ve got a 500 Mariner...it’s one of the keepers in my collection. Neat shotgun.

It is a 590A1 Mariner. I made the purchase yesterday online. It is being shipped from the Texas store to the Fountain Valley store. Lol I fixed the title. I didn't realize I had put 500A1 on there.

I purchased one three weeks ago at Riflegear. Great shotgun. Rack the slide a lot to loosen it up.

Nice. This will be my last shotgun purchase. I thought since its my last shotgun, I might as well make it a good one.

I love the 590A1. Have that and the Remington 870. I can say that the 590A1 is the better choice by far. The Mariner’s coating is just gravy.

Man i'm getting excited now. Where can I get a magazine extension for this shotgun? I saw a 590A1 Mariner with a magazine extension being sold in the marketplace last year. It looked nice.

First question, what is the barrel length of your 590? 18.5” or 20”?

As to your question, I don’t think you can, at least if it’s the same as the 500 in that regard, which as far as I know it is. The 590 comes setup with an 18.5” barrel and 7 shot capacity or a 20” barrel and 9 shot capacity. The barrel length is tied to the magazine length, and vice versa.

The 500 is either 5+1 with an 18” barrel (ATP-6) or 7+1 with a 20” barrel (ATP-8) so the 590 looks like it has an extra round.

The mounting bolt for the barrel screws into the end of the mag tube, so there’s no extending it like you can with an 870. (Willing to stand corrected on this, but don’t think the 590 is any different.)

The 590 Mariners I’ve seen are already 8+1 shooters, so I wouldn’t want more weight than that with a steel receiver. Put a Sidesaddle with 6 more on it and you’ll have plenty.

My ATP-6 M500 is already heavy even with the aluminum receiver with a 5+1 load, a 6 round Sidesaddle, and a Speedfeed stock with 4 extra rounds, along with a Surefire forend and ghost ring sights. With a Sidesaddle on a 20” Mariner you’d be carrying just a round less than that with a heavier receiver.

Here you go.

https://sjhardware.com/collections/m...mag-tube-mk-ii

The two rounder will bring the tube flush with the barrel giving you eight rounds.

Mine will have a 18.5” barrel. I’m pretty sure I saw a 590A1 18.5” Mariner with a mag extension in the marketplace. I should have saved the pictures. Mine will probably be much heavier as I will be adding wood furniture. It’s going to look nice I think.

News to me! Thanks. Does this replace the factory mag tube on the 590 then?

Doesn’t the 590 barrel have a mag tube mounting bolt that screws into the end of the magazine tube like on the 500?

Never mind, I see it, has a mag cap that retains the barrel, just like on the 870. My bad. As long as you have a new longer spring you’ll be in great shape.

I have to get a 590 now...!

The kit comes with a new spring and follower. It's built better than the Mossberg + 1 that comes with the gun.

Drove up to RifleGear this morning and did the paperwork on the 590A1. Now the wait. Man that shotgun is a beast! Feels way better than my Maverick 88.

500&590 are great shotguns.
I've had my 590 since 89 and other than a fubar'ed safety I replaced, it's been dead nuts reliable.
*I did replace a mag spring with a Wolf spring this year. It was on the cusp of too weak to feed 3" shells 100%.
Good get OP!

Funny, the only two things I’ve replaced (functionally) on my ‘89 M500 is the safety switch and the mag spring as well. I keep it loaded and that long spring suffers a bit from compression after 20-25 years. I only load 2 3/4” shells and they all still fed into the carrier, but the last round was pretty weak.

I have seen them carried by Law Enforcement near the beach areas in Mexico.

Great reliable shotguns Mossberg 500/590 or Remington 870 can’t go wrong with either.

Honestly for over 30 years I was a Remington guy My GF, complete opposite. Nothing against Mossberg all those years, but when I finally picked one up a few years ago and after shooting it quite a bit, I am now torn away from the Remington and leaning more towards the Mossberg. The main motive admittedly are the ergonomics. After getting the 590A1 Mariner, I am really digging it. My best friend who chimes in here is now laughing at me.

The price was such a screaming deal that it was worth driving up from El Cajon 2x?

I have a 590 Mariner I should get the matching heat shield or the ghost ring sights. I sold off my 500 Mariner. I sort of collect marine finish shotguns.

I have a 590 Mariner I should get the matching heat shield or the ghost ring sights. I sold off my 500 Mariner. I sort of collect marine finish shotguns.
I thought it was a good deal. 590A1 Mariners are really hard to find. Every online store i've been to is sold out.

Mossberg makes a 590 Marina and a 590A1 Marina.

I have the 590A1 Marina (7+1 shots.) It came with a forehand that has built-in Picatinny rails on 3,6, and 9 0'clock.

I added a Hogue 12" LOP stock, and that was a perfect setup for me.

A heavy beast.

That is definitely one nice shotgun. I've had my 590a1 since 2010 and the action is so smooth I can rack the slide with my pinky finger.

Agreed on the Hogue LOP. My 590A1 has it plus the grind to fit limbsaver.. not quite a "pillow fight" though.

Picked up the 590A1 today. As soon as I got home I got to work on it. Took off the synthetic stock and tried to put my wood stock on. I couldn’t get the stock tight. Tried putting the synthetic stock back on, and got the same loose fitting stock.

Thinking the bolt was crap I took the stock long bolt from my Maverick 88 and installed both stocks to the 590A1. They both fit nice and tight with the Maverick 88 stock long bolt. Don’t know what the hell is going on but the Mariner long bolt just doesn’t work. WTF?

I'm waiting for the 500 and 590A1 Martian/Martini/Marigold.

Auto spell check is getting you. :-)

The wood furniture looks great.

Thank you . Will it be ok to run a Maverick 88 stock bolt on my 590A1? This is actually bumming me out. Expensive shotgun shouldn’t have this stupid problem.
