Default Looking for a ar scope.

Iím building a 20Ē ar for plinking and varmiting. I was wondering if any of you have a opinion on which is the better scope or if you have any suggestions on a better one then the two I have narrowed down.

First is

I like the reticle and pretty much everything about it.

Then there is this one

Itís a little cheaper and has more magnification and also seems a little more compact. Any suggestions. Looking to order tonight.

Vortex Optics Viper HS Rifle Scope 30mm Tube 4-16x 44mm Side Focus Matte $339 with V-plex

Vortex Diamondback HP 4-16x42mm Riflescope I have two and like them side paralax is worth a few extra bucks. Shop around you might save a few bucks. My scopes have duplex reticle but would get dead hold if I had it to do over again.

Leupold's VX-1 and Vortex's Diamondback are good options for your price range. Also, watch the used market.

There are many great options available. The most important factor to me is the reticle. If you like a specific type of reticle, let that guide your decision making process.

Once you find a reticle you like, it's important that the adjustments of the turrets match the increments of the reticle. For example, since you like the Vortex, the hashmarks on the reticle are MOA, and the turrets are MOA, so your adjustments will be easy to dial in.

Some scopes have MIL reticles, but MOA adjustments, so it becomes confusing to dial in corrections.

Since you like the reticle on that Vortex, I would give it my recommendation. Their warranty is great, and it's a good quality scope for the money. I currently own a Leupold and two SWFA scopes with similar reticles, and I think you'll be very happy with that optic. While I don't own one, I would definitely consider a Vortex if I needed a new optic.

Let us know what you decide!

I agree. After that I shop for features that I find useful.

A few major issues I see with your #1 choice OP...1, it has a 1" tube. The amount of light that will be limited in low light hunts. 2, it has only a 40mm objective, again, not enough light to be let through. 3, no paralax adjustment. 4, no illuminated reticle, while its not needed, its a very nice feature to have on low light hunts.

I think this Primary Arms 4-14x44 is a much better value. Plus it has a very similar reticle.
